The phytochemical composition was evaluated by standard methods, and confirmed by thin-layer chromatography. Free radical scavenging activity was determined by DPPH assay, cytotoxic activity by brine shrimp lethality assay, and anti-cancer potential was investigated using liver carcinoma HepG2 cells. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of saponins, flavonoids, proanthocyanins, tannins, and polyphenols. The total phenolic and flavonoid content varied from 0.28 to 5.26 mg gallic acid equivalent 100 mg−1 and 0.25–50.26 quercetin equivalent 100 mg−1, respectively. There was a linear relationship between the free radical scavenging activity and phytochemical concentrations with an IC50 value of 108 ± 1.2 µg mL−1 compared to the standard (IC50: 2.59 ± 0.02 µg mL−1). Phenolic profile and total phenolic content of the extracts revealed in vitro antioxidant potential, which was confirmed using HepG2 cells. Reduction of TBARS level and increase in NO levels were observed in cell medium. The plant showed anti-inflammatory and thrombolytic activities in a concentration-dependent manner. The GC-MS analysis showed the presence of eight bioactive compounds of which the hexadecanoic Acid, 2-Propyl-, methyl Ester, and 2,3-anhydro-D-Mannosan were the two major compounds present. The bioactive compounds present included phenolics and flavonoids (55.0 ± 1.3 mg GAE g−1 d.w. and 42.5 ± 0.5 mg RE g−1 d.w.). FT-IR analysis detected the presence of aldehydes and anhydrites functional groups. Antioxidant properties were positively associated with the secondary metabolites. The anti-proliferative activity of methanolic leaf extracts showed the IC50 values 135.82 and 181.73 μg mL−1 for A549 and MCF-7, respectively. Ten compounds including four flavonoids, four phenolics, and two triterpenoids were isolated and identified by chromatography and spectroscopy. The n-butanol extract had the greatest antioxidant activity and inhibited hemolysis with a value of IC50 at 322.85 ± 0.87 µg mL−1. The chloroform extract exhibited the highest anti-inflammatory effect with 45.27% inhibition. A. mexicana leaves extract at 400 and 750 mg kg−1 b.w. demonstrated protection of renal tubes, kidney cells and reduced the levels of serum creatinine and calcium compared to the urolithiasis induced group. Further, A. mexicana restored blood and urine markers to normal before and after treatment in urolithiasis rats and caused the breakdown of calcium oxalate crystals in the urinary tract as observed by microscopy. The A. mexicana extract protected from renal damage and repaired and increased diuresis activity thereby completely excreted calcium oxalate crystals in renal tubes. The levels of total cholesterol (TC), low- and high-density lipoproteins (LDL and HDL, respectively), triacylglycerols (TAG) and blood glucose in parasitized mice treated with MEPTS (100, 200 or 400 mg kg−1 b.w. d−1, p.o) and artemether/lumenfantrin (28 mg kg−1 b.w. d−1, p.o) were determined and compared with malaria control. Alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, glycosides, steroids, carotenoids, anthocyanins, anthraquinones, terpenoids, and phenols were detected in the extract. On days 1, 2, and 3, there were progressive increase in malaria parasitemia in malaria control compared with parasitized-MEPTS-administered mice that had dose-dependent decrease in malaria parasitemia. Malaria control group showed hyperlipidemia and hypoglycemia compared to normal mice, which was ameliorated by the administration of MEPTS, and artemether/lumenfantrin. Antihyperlipidemic activities of hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts (100, 200, or 300 mg kg−1 b.w.) were evaluated by lipid profile analysis. Twelve (12) fractions (F1 to F12) were collected from the most antihyperlipidemic extract (ethyl acetate at 100 mg kg−1) and, assayed in vivo for antihyperlipidemic activity. The effects of the most antihyperlipidemic fraction (F2) on redox sensitive biomarkers (SOD, CAT, GSH, MDA) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity at cellular and molecular levels were evaluated. Fraction-2 (F2) was further subjected to GC-MS and LC-MS analysis for identification of nonpolar and polar components. The F2 treatment decreased the level of MDA with concomitant enhancement of GSH, LPL activity in the liver and serum and up regulated the expression of SOD, CAT, and LPL genes in liver and blood relative to the untreated rats. The extract was obtained from dried leaf samples using 70% methanol and screened for phytochemical constituents. The crude extract was partitioned successively with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and butanol. Membrane stability and inhibition of albumin denaturation assays were done to evaluate the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity. Antibacterial activity was determined using six test bacteria strains of both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. Phytochemical screening tested positive for flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, steroids, tannins and cardiac glycosides. The crude extract had the highest total phenol (344.67 ± 11.26 mg GAE g−1) and flavonoids (230.30 ± 22.11 mg RE g−1) while the butanol fraction had the lowest total phenol and total flavonoids (117.57 ± 9.40 mg GAE g−1 and 100.60 ± 1.99 mg RE g−1, respectively). The crude extracts and fractions exhibited concentration-dependent anti-inflammatory activity, comparable to Ibuprofen.
