In the context of Pakistan, despite its legal prohibition, the practice is supported by an influential segment of society. This phenomenon is deeply rooted in a matrix of governmental failure, autocratic governance structures, pervasive social inequalities, and the systemic marginalization of specific communities. This study uses a distinctive dataset to scrutinize the statistical dynamics of bonded labor in Pakistan. Utilizing the Cox proportional hazards model, we investigate the likelihood of individuals resorting to debt bondage in Pakistan. Our analysis identifies a constellation of critical factors intimately linked with the profiles and household backgrounds of individuals entangled in debt bondage. These determinants encompass inherited familial wealth, acute health crises, unforeseeable catastrophic occurrences, household income levels, educational attainment, the burden of dependents, and the financial implications of dowry obligations. Furthermore, our research elucidates a significant association between the economic marginalization within labor markets and the wage disparities underscored and exacerbated by debt bondage contracts.</p>","PeriodicalId":43537,"journal":{"name":"Fudan Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"38 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142191213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It first examines Taylor’s account of the immanent frame in his <i>A Secular Age</i>. This helps us to grasp the moral spiritual outlook of the modern world and the underlying moral concerns of the controversies between the religions and secularists. I then examine Taylor’s claim regarding the indispensability of transcendence in achieving the fullness of human life which is criticized by non-transcendentists and naturalist mundane transcendentists. I argue that the phenomenon of these controversies, on the one hand, is consistent with Taylor’s account of the Nova effect in the secular world, and, on the other hand, that assessing these different versions of transcendence via Taylor’s historical hermeneutical approach or Wainwright’s inference to the best explanation may raise the problem of Christian-centric or epistemic circularity. Furthermore, as we are now living in the immanent frame, interreligious dialogue cannot be implemented without the practical concerns of ordinary life. Inspired by Ricoeur’s idea of testimony and narrative identity, I argue for a kind of interreligious testimonial dialogue which integrates morality, actions, thought and experience into communication, so that it can enhance mutual sympathetic understanding, broaden the life vision between participants, no matter whether religious or nonreligious, and break through the limitation of epistemic circularity.</p>","PeriodicalId":43537,"journal":{"name":"Fudan Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142191231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Valuable insights have been gained into how authenticity is problematised in language teaching and how to improve the situation by engaging learners with better-designed materials and activities. These achievements notwithstanding, empirical evidence remains insufficient to understand learners’ meaning-making endeavours in real-life learning scenarios. The current study attempts to examine authenticity in additional language learning from a semiotic perspective, which may shed new light on the complex cognitive process of beginner learners’ first encounter with a new language and how this process could be motivated and facilitated by teachers in a classroom setting. Evidence of semiotic articulation and production of authenticity from a low-pressure Spanish classroom is analysed focussing on cultural authenticity, interactive authenticity and authenticity of behaviour and engagement. The evidence is discussed to find how semiotic resources in combination with lived experiences may help learners’ comprehension and appreciation of the target language and its culture. These findings reveal the relevance and value of semiotic approaches to language teaching research and provide practical implications for exposing pre-tertiary young learners to languages other than English for more diverse and extensive learning experiences.","PeriodicalId":63773,"journal":{"name":"Language and Semiotic Studies","volume":"17 14","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141925064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

China, representing the concerns of neighboring countries, has underscored the illicit and detrimental nature of this action. This study explores the metaphors employed in Chinese media regarding the discharge of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water. Based on the self-built corpus, we reveal the rhetorical motives underlying the metaphors, drawing on the framework of critical metaphor analysis. The study centers on two major metaphors – war and liar metaphors – in the discourse of two Chinese official media, China Daily and People’s Daily Online. It is found that according to Chinese media, initiating and protesting the discharge of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water is a war; and that the Japanese government and TEPCO are liars. The metaphor choices reflect China’s stance of opposition and condemnation against the discharge and its intention of uncovering deceptive and misleading information.","PeriodicalId":63773,"journal":{"name":"Language and Semiotic Studies","volume":"58 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141923230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Urban authorities can reduce environmental and climate change damages by promoting green construction and clean energy production, establishing recycling stations, encouraging residents to change their consumption and eating patterns, and more. Municipal authorities in Ashkelon, Israel, like their counterparts around the world, recognize the critical importance of participating in global efforts to address the climate crisis. In this context, we conducted a survey to examine the associations between knowledge, attitudes, and behavior regarding health and the environment among Ashkelon residents. A total of 322 participants from the city’s adult population completed an online questionnaire. Our findings indicate that Ashkelon residents understand the connection between the environment and human behavior and have a positive attitude toward preserving the environment. However, not all the city’s residents exhibit pro-environmental behavior, and not all pro-environmental facilities are accessible to all city residents. Significant positive connections were found between knowledge, attitudes, pro-environmental behavior, and accessibility to facilities. Participants who kept pets at home demonstrated more pro-environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behavior than those who did not have pets. Strengthening positive attitudes towards the environment is essential if individuals are to acquire knowledge and understand how to maintain a healthy environment. To achieve this end, extensive public education on environmental and climate change issues is needed, and the city environment should promote a healthy lifestyle while preserving the environment.","PeriodicalId":23705,"journal":{"name":"WORLD","volume":"110 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141926620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There seems to be a link between a nation's economic tourism strength and its research output. Countries like Australia, Italy, and Spain, which are known for tourism, also dominate research contributions. China has led in this domain, consistently upping its publications since 2012. It has been verified by many empirical studies so far. Since the concept of growth-driven inflation belongs to the fundamentals of macroeconomic theory, one could reasonably assume inflation can also be led by tourism development. The question, however, is through what mechanisms could it be adequately identified and assessed. If anywhere, tourism-led inflation could first and foremost be perceived in a country with a significant economic impact of tourism. We take one of such countries as a case study and use the structural vector autoregression methodology to examine tourism-led inflation. The presented empirical framework may also serve as a role model applicable to other countries and regions.","PeriodicalId":2,"journal":{"name":"ACS Applied Bio Materials","volume":"27 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141800565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
