This study aims to compare political ethics in the Ghaznavid period (with an emphasis on Tarikh-e Beyhaqi) and the contemporary age. The research was conducted using a descriptive-analytical method and a comparative approach. Historical data were extracted from Tarikh-e Beyhaqi and compared with modern examples of corruption, justice, and pragmatism in politics. The findings indicate that in the Ghaznavid era, political ethics were heavily influenced by the personal inclinations of rulers such as Sultan Mahmud and Masʿud, and concepts such as loyalty, betrayal, and justice were often functions of personal relations and absolute power. In contrast, in the present era, the rule of law, supervisory institutions, and the role of public opinion have to some extent reduced autocracy, although certain ethical patterns—such as excessive pragmatism and administrative corruption—have persisted. The results reveal that the key difference between the two periods lies in the institutionalization of mechanisms for controlling power; whereas in the Ghaznavid period the absence of independent institutions led to the expansion of court intrigues and injustice, today mechanisms such as a free press, elections, and anti-corruption bodies—though imperfect—provide the possibility of monitoring political ethics.
