Abstract

ABSTRACT The calcium oxalate reduction capacity of Argemone mexicana was demonstrated in vivo in ethylene glycol-induced urolithic rats. A. mexicana leaves extract at 400 and 750 mg kg−1 b.w. demonstrated protection of renal tubes, kidney cells and reduced the levels of serum creatinine and calcium compared to the urolithiasis induced group. Further, A. mexicana restored blood and urine markers to normal before and after treatment in urolithiasis rats and caused the breakdown of calcium oxalate crystals in the urinary tract as observed by microscopy. The A. mexicana extract protected from renal damage and repaired and increased diuresis activity thereby completely excreted calcium oxalate crystals in renal tubes. Analysis of methanolic extract of A. mexicana showed the presence of a 3,4-dihydro-3-hydroxy-7-(7-methyloctyl)naphthalen-2(1 H)-one as the bioactive compound which may be attributed to the antiurolithiatic activity.
