The questions focused on the types of texts they accept for translation, and their cooperation with publishers, editors and proofreaders. Among the most notable results was the observation that about a third of the respondents do not specialize in any genre, author, period or area of literary translation; among those who do, the specialisations usually derive from their private interests preceding translation experience. A large proportion of translators try to suggest texts worthy of translation to their publishers, but many do not feel they have any influence or even choice when it comes to the selection of commissions they receive. The publisher usually does not explicitly specify the aim, target group and conditions of a translation job, and editors and proofreaders usually only come into contact with the translator once the translation is finished. Most of the respondents receive the text as a digital file, which they usually do not read in full before commencing translation. Gościński","doi":"10.12775/RP.2018.003","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.12775/RP.2018.003","url":null,"abstract":"The pass rate in the examination to become a sworn translator, being much lower than 50 per cent, gives rise to questions about the reasons for failing the examination by more than half of candidates. In the paper, the author tries to answer these questions, taking into account such factors as how well candidates are prepared for the examination, the system of translator and interpreter training, the written and oral examination procedure, the range of examination topics and necessary specialist terminology, the selection of examination texts, the translation brief, time pressure and assessment subjectivity. In conclusion, the author states that examination failures may be attributed to five factors: examinees’ unsatisfactory knowledge and skills (the lack of adequate native and foreign language skills, the lack of a thorough knowledge of Polish law and the law of the foreign language country or countries, a limited specialist vocabulary, insufficient mastery of translation techniques and strategies and a poor knowledge of the rules for doing certified translations), the system of teaching Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students (ineffective with regard to the requirements of the examination in question), the examination structure, requirements and the method of its administration (a quite high pass threshold, examination conditions – both in the oral part and in the written part – differing from typical sworn translator’s working conditions, broad examination scope and the necessity to develop an extensive specialist vocabulary), examiners’ subjectivity (the arbitrariness of examiners’ decisions in the case of relative/non-binary errors) and – to a certain extent – the provision of insufficient information by the examination institution.","PeriodicalId":33180,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przekladoznawczy","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66633183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its aim is to verify which translation strategies and methods are most frequently encountered while dealing with such problems and whether they are a result of globalisation or rather an attempt to transfer elements of the source language culture. In order to show the most frequent translation strategies, a corpus of title translations from Polish into English was analysed. Firstly, the culture issues were categorized into names, quotations and other problems. Then, examples of translation strategies were elaborated upon. It turned out that the influence of globalisation is visible in title translations. Specifically cultural items difficult to render are often generalised or removed. Foreignisation is used especially in case of names and allusions to songs, but other strategies are also applied in such cases. It is also common in case of names when foreign ones are replaced with their target language equivalents. However, then the viewers still have a feeling that the name belongs to the foreign culture, although its sound is closer to them. In general, rendering cultural issues is rather not very essential to translators of film titles: titles are foreignised only when viewers have no difficulties with understanding them. {"title":"Ustawa o zawodzie tłumacza przysięgłego a tłumaczenie sądowe w Polsce","authors":"Karolina Nartowska","doi":"10.12775/RP.2018.010","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.12775/RP.2018.010","url":null,"abstract":"Court interpreters play a key role in bilingual proceedings, as emphasized in Directive 2010/64/EU on the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings. In Poland, the activity of court interpreters is regulated by the Act on the Profession of Sworn Translator. In this paper, the current situation of court interpreting in Poland is subject to a critical reflection in the light of this legislation. The analysis shows that most Polish sworn translators do not have professional vocational preparation, and they do not feel competent in (court) interpreting. Poland, furthermore, lacks university training for court interpreters, which in turn leads to insufficient quality of interpretation. Moreover, Polish courts have difficulties in finding an interpreter, whereas sworn translators are reluctant to work in the courts. This situation is caused, in addition to the above, by low rates for interpreting, as well as the incomprehension of the nature of the interpreter’s work by many institutional representatives. Thus, it becomes possible to put forward postulates enabling optimisation of the provisions of the Act and the current situation in Poland: changes in translators training, the adaptation of the exam for court interpreters, and the verification of competences of appointed translators would contribute to improving the quality of court interpretation and to safeguarding that only professional interpreters perform court interpreting.
