Much more interesting aspects of the art of literary translation emerge when it comes to taking strategic decisions concerning how far the translator can trust the reader in deliberate violation of conventions in the target language and culture or how close the translator can near the limit of acceptability. This Polish-German contrastive analysis of extracts of Joanna Bator’s novel, in which the author in an unconventional way works with her language, was conducted on the basis of German philosopher Friedrich Schleiermacher’s well known idea of dichotomy in the theory of literary translation, which employs domestication and foreignisation strategies, with the concepts of style, personal aesthetics and formal-aesthetic equivalence, as well as on the basis of Esther Kinsky’s theorethical essay „Fremdsprechen. Gedanken zum Ubersetzen”. Kinsky, the translator of Joanna Bator’s novel, suggests that a certain level of foreignisation in translation should be preserved . This theoretical assumption is virtually applied by Kinsky, foreignization being her main translation strategy. In the process of translation Kinsky also takes more radical steps of omitting or neutralising certain passages, thus diminishing their semantic strength. By analysing a literary text we can determine to what extent the strategies that the translator uses are justified or when the decision to implement a domestication strategy erases certain value of the text and creates only an illusion of authenticity, or vice versa – when foreignisation which goes too far makes the text unclear to the reader. Translation techniques employed by Kinsky are, as we may presume, the effect of the translator’s attempt to reach the balance between adequacy and acceptability, which are so crucial in the art of translation.","PeriodicalId":33180,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przekladoznawczy","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66633657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis included 42 dictionary entries which were divided into lexemes naming typically German phenomena. The second group proved to be more challenging to translate than the first group following the difficulties with accounting for stylistic features, particularly evaluative ones. The article critically discusses translation options found in German-Polish dictionaries and offers the author’s own suggestions.","PeriodicalId":33180,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przekladoznawczy","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66633030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The English equivalents discussed include: “executor of a will”, “executor of testament” and “executor nominate”. In order to conduct a thorough assessment of the suggested equivalents, the definitions of the Polish term and their English equivalents presented in monolingual legal dictionaries of British law have been analysed. Moreover, the study aims to verify whether or not the suggested equivalents occur in the texts of the British sources of law and jurisprudence. Finally, translation techniques applied while forming English equivalents under discussion are identified.","PeriodicalId":33180,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przekladoznawczy","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66633588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article offers an insight into Leśmian’s output as a translator and, indirectly, into his connections with literatures in foreign languages. As based on the available pieces included into his Collected Works and other relevant source materials, the paper outlines Leśmian’s views on the art of translation, indicates his existing translations (Poe’s stories and Arabian tales), thus suggesting the modes of their analysis, as well as his interest in texts and authors that he translated or wanted to translate. Since the outcomes of many of his endeavours are unknown, the paper indicates the directions and aims of further investigations. In its final part, translation research proposals and some of the possibilities of including these translations in the analysis of Leśmian’s works are presented.","PeriodicalId":33180,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przekladoznawczy","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66632932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The starting point are considerations on theories of the role of the translator and reflections about the meaning of re-translation. In this paper the most important question concerns motivations and strategies in the translators’ approach and the existence of different concepts and ideas of translation. The object of analysis are German translations by Kurt Harrer, Henryk Bereska and Klaus Staemmler.","PeriodicalId":33180,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przekladoznawczy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47854553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first step of the research was to prove that songs are a recurring element in many American sitcoms. In order to do that, dialogues of six different series were analysed. Next, three different examples of song modifications sung by actors and three verbal references to famous song lyrics were chosen as to illustrate the kind of musical-verbal elements that translators have to face while translating sitcoms. The theoretical part of the paper is devoted to sitcom as a text genre and general aspects of song translation. What follows is an analysis of specific examples taken from Friends, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, and their official TV translations into Polish and German. It has been shown that songs in sitcoms function not only as a musical element, but also as a joke. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that different translation techniques can be used while translating lyrics in sitcoms. There are various aspects that have to be taken into consideration, such as music in the background or references to the lyrics presented visually on the screen. The results indicate that it is essential for the translator to be consistent and sometimes to favour the humorous function of the source text over its denotative meaning. The ‘singability’ and song-like form of the target-language lyrics seem also to be of great importance in the reception of translation.","PeriodicalId":33180,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przekladoznawczy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47446167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
