Chekhov when translated into English. In the course of study, the ways of translating nouns that make up the thematic group of words “nature” are analysed. The choice of the translation option is explained by the coincidence or non-coincidence of the features of the meaning of the nature description elements in both languages. In case of coincidence of meanings of the analysed lexical units in the Russian and English languages, the equivalent is used in the translation, and if the features of the meanings don’t coincide, variant correspondences are used. The article analyses personification as a leading figurative means, and concludes that the use of verbal elements in it is more frequent, and the strengthening of the personifying potential of the trope in translation occurs due to attributing the images nature, moon, earth to the feminine gender through the use of personal and possessive pronouns.","PeriodicalId":343725,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. Particular attention is paid to the title of Wilde's only novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray”: to the choice of words, rhythm and semantics associated with the author's aesthetic position. The titles of plays by Wilde the playwright follow the English literary tradition and quite often specify the genre, as well as focus on the name, gender, and social status of the main character. Titles of stories and fairy tales have similar characteristics. Approximately one third of all the considered titles are eponymous or literal, the second third are eponymous with an additional attributive characteristic, sometimes with ironic overtones at the level of the poetics of the title, the third part are titles in the possessive form, enhancing the nominative function. Translations of titles into Russian over a century of existence and renewal have come as close as possible to the original, maintaining its simplicity and richness.","PeriodicalId":343725,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. General-methodological features of rhetoric and of different grounds for its consideration are discussed. Extensional and intensional sides of rhetoric are singled out. Rhetoric is also considered in view of mental efforts applied so that its reflexive and non-reflexive variants could be differentiated. Brontё’s novel “Jane Eyre” to reconstruct Jane’s appearance and character. Two translations into Russian, made by V. Stanevich and I. Gurova, were compared. The study shows that in the translations discussed the image of the character differs in the following aspects. In V. Stanevich’s translation Jane is more spontaneous, in a lesser degree rationalist, less strict towards herself and other people, less absorbed in self-examination. In I. Gurova’s translation Jane’s self-control and self-discipline, her strictness towards herself and the others are emphasized. V. Stanevich is more likely to emphasize positive connotations, while I. Gurova prefers a more negative colouring. I. Gurova looks to the values of the source culture, thus, Jane appears in her translation as a typical Englishwoman, and the reader never forgets that the book is about another country. Meanwhile, V. Stanevich looks to the values of the target culture, and Jane’s image is represented as a universal archetype in her translation.","PeriodicalId":343725,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. The well-known V. Thomsen’s etymology from the Old Norse vár and the postulate of the sagas’ term primacy do not allow explaining the origin and genesis of all three related terms. The article suggests other possible etymological approaches to the word Varangian, considering probable Finnic mediation, and substantiates a fundamentally different historical interaction of the Old Russian, Scandinavian, and Greek terms, with the Russian one having been originated first, in the Viking Age, on the future Old Rus’ territory.","PeriodicalId":343725,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. These are manuals for teaching poetry recitation, created until the end of the Mao era, which contain detailed technical instructions for the preparation of reciters. They serve as unique material for describing how declamatory practice was regulated in line with the general language regulation of the PRC and, above all, promoting the new standard in prejudice of various regional idioms. These texts make it possible to see general trends in the evolution of \"new poetry\" ( xin shi ) towards the revival of certain techniques and characteristics of various forms of traditional verse and to assess the relations of the oral and the written in a Chinese poetic text composed and articulated using contemporary diction.","PeriodicalId":343725,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. This column contains only interviews with famous German politicians, public figures, scientists. The main positions with regard to Russia were defined, the role of lexical and syntactic means of artistic expression in their representation was investigated. Attention was paid not only to the linguistic means of reflecting the image of Russia in the interviews themselves, but also to the headlines. A journalistic headline has great semantic potential for attracting readers' attention and for capaciously reflecting the essence of the material. Various interviews use metaphor, antithesis, metonymy, parceling and many others. The aim of the article is also to analyze the linguistic personality of German figures, which allows us to draw certain conclusions. In the interviews, the image of Russia is considered in the context of the opposition \"us and them\". Despite the abundance of criticism of Russian leadership and policy, an emerging tendency to view Russia not as an \"aliens\", but in the context of \"ours\" is revealed. The inclusion of Russia in the circle of each of these concepts has its own means of expression, forming either a discrediting or complementary context.","PeriodicalId":343725,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. Martinson. Two groups of nonce words can be distinguished in the poem: highly specialized terms (scientific and technical terminology) and Dorisburg`s «fantasy» slang. Both groups are functionally aimed at solving the main goal of the poem - to create artistic images that allow us to have a new look at the philosophical, ethical, social, environmental and other problems arisen in connection with the development of science and technology. Nonce words not only give new names to objects, actions and phenomena of reality, contribute to the poetic imagery in the poem, but also introduce additional meanings (and connections) to the text, break perception of the text and express the author`s outlook. The particularity of Martinson`s poem is that occasionalisms (technically verified language of the future and «marginal» language of the past) must be considered together, in the combination of their semantic meanings and connections, in order to understand Martinson`s views on the events of the 20th century.","PeriodicalId":343725,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. Modern text linguistics studying structure, semantics and text functioning is multisided and multidimensional in its interaction with the problems of discourse, semiotics, narratology, psycholinguistics which is explained by the extension and modification of the notion «the text» because of its heterogeneity and multimodality. Extension of the typological range of texts includes the problem of their typology into the agenda again. The relevance of the paper is determined by the status of the category of certainty / uncertainty in modern Russian, which is ambiguous, by contrast with other European languages, in which the system of articles is its marker. It is reported that in Russian, the manifestations of this category at the lexical level are embodied in the use of a number of indefinite pronouns and adverbs, the rules for the use of which even native speakers do not have a clear idea, which is confirmed by an associative experiment conducted as part of the study. The article shows that the material related to semantization, grammatical and stylistic nuances of the use of indefinite pronouns and adverbs in contexts when teaching Russian as a foreign language is considered fragmentarily. This makes communication difficult. This work is an attempt to develop a level-by-level system for teaching foreigners indefinite pronouns and adverbs.","PeriodicalId":343725,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University.
