La Princesse de Clèves by Lafayette: A New Translation and Bilingual Pedagogical Edition for the Digital Age, 2022, Lever, Open access. ISBN: 978-1-64315-038-3. This publication will provide exquisite digital mining, endless exploration, and discovery for specialists in premodern French literature. Moreover, this text will be very useful for teaching-centric academics who highly value student accessibility in all the meanings of the word. Simply, when considering teaching this novel, adopting the Bilis et. al 2022 edition of La Princesse de Clèves is a must. There are two mediums available for the text, one written and one audio (both French and English versions), that include visual, cartographic, historic, linguistic, and artistic interactive components. This edition specifically combines all these modules to achieve two industry leading strengths: (1) bilingualism and (2) increased accessibility. The text of the novel itself is found in a side-by-side bilingual version from location 29 to 418 (of 808 locations of the entire digital dossier). The instructor can choose only French or only English versions of the text. The text is read in both French and English, which also speaks to the remarkable accessibility of this edition. The French version is divided into four parts, and the English version is just one audio file. There are also video recordings of different participants discussing questions related to subjects such as issues of translating the text into English, or the place of the novel and its importance in literary production, in contemporary literature, and even social and political issues. This edition of Clèves is free, which is one of the more important accessibility aspects. Also, when browsing the written text of the novel, in both English and French, vocabulary definitions, along with historical explanations of characters and events present in the novel, are linked to a readily available database by the click of a button. Furthermore, maps are added to the collection of paratext. A digital “carte de tendre” and its analysis are available, as well as an enlargeable map of France containing topographical and historical information on the 16th and 17th centuries, along with visual traces of characters’ travels. These components provide unprecedented visual information. Students can easily move from one cartographical place to the next to find data and resources for relevant projects, including using the embedded extension, Hyperbole. It grants space for comments and annotations, both private and public, which, in a classroom context, allows for class discussion on the margins of the text. Les tout-puissants. Séguier, 2022. ISBN 9782840498575. Pp. 272. Le compositeur et producteur de Madonna, ancien membre mythique du groupe Taxi Driver, signe un premier roman remarqué sur l’aveuglement technologique et la surveillance commerciale généralisée. Mirwais Ahmadzaï se saisit d’un instant civilisationnel qu’il voit survenir, l’instant où les populations démissionneront collectivement de leur sens critique pour obéir aux dirigeants des GAFA, rebaptisés “IG-FAA” (24). Pour interroger ce point de bascule et le degré d’aliénation aux milliardaires tout-puissants, l’auteur frappe les esprits en imaginant comment la démiurgie marketing moderne parviendrait à faire accepter aux populations la croix gammée comme symbole “magique” (17) de l’ultra-libéralisme. Sans coup férir, les swastikas se déclinent bientôt sur la plupart des objets marchands et font rapidement l’unanimité dans le monde financier, artistique et même religieux, pour qui cette soudaine banalisation permettrait “d’en réduire [l]a charge émotionnelle” (15). Sur fond de Covid-19 et de guerre en Ukraine, Lazare, le personnage principal, évolue dans un Paris orwellien (houellebecquien?) où les “réseaux sociaux, la pornographie, les jeux vidéo, les jeux sur internet, l’achat compulsif en ligne, les start-up, l’informatique continue, les blockchains, le darknet, l’hypernet, la communication instantanée [ont] détruit l’espace psychique naturel des hommes” (134–35). Dans ce décor de dématérialisation effrénée, Lazare observe que la disparition des interactions humaines se diffracte sur l’ensemble des rapports sociaux. Dépressif, le héros souffre d’une “décourageante cénesthésie” (59) et l’humanité tout entière entre en “catagenèse” (69). À l’image de Glenn Albrecht, concepteur de l’écoanxiété et de la solastalgie, Ahmadzaï théorise à sa manière les futures maladies du numérique et les différents troubles psychiques qu’elles pourront provoquer sur les populations. Ce roman impressionne donc par l’ampleur de la dérégulation en cours et du cauchemar digital dans lequel sont plongés les individus. Difficile en effet de faire civilisation dans une société où Netflix devient l’unique plateforme éducative (66), où le magistère du populisme 2.0 règne en maître sur un monde métamorphosé en “camp de consommation dirigée” (194). Mais à quel exercice se livre Ahmadzaï, s’agit-il d’un roman de science-fiction, d’une œuvre dystopique, d’anticipation ou tout simplement complotiste? L’auteur n’a cure de ses questions, il se contente de décrire le moment où les êtres humains n’auront plus la possibilité de conscientiser leur servitude volontaire. En effet, le véritable enjeu du livre revient [End Page 232] à questionner le délitement criant des valeurs, observé dans les démocraties qui brident les libertés individuelles en transformant leurs citoyens en cibles commerciales. Strange Chisholm, Edward. A Waiter in Paris: Adventures in the Dark Heart of the City. Pegasus, 2022. ISBN 978-1-63936-283-7. Pp. 371. In this memoir, an aspiring British writer, after a breakup with his French girlfriend, finds himself alone in Paris and desperate for a job. By chance, Chisholm lands a tryout at a prestigious corporate-owned restaurant near the Seine, frequented by executives and celebrities as well as tourists. With no experience, he begins as a runner—one who delivers food and clears tables—and stays on, with the aim of becoming a professional waiter. As time passes, the harsh truths of restaurant life emerge. Foremost is the importance of appearances. “If a waiter is doing his job correctly, he will be manipulating your perception of reality” (202). The dining room is a theatre where the waiters, in their mandatory black suits and bow ties, play their roles to perfection. Behind the scenes another world exists. From the spacious dining room, a swinging door leads to an underground maze of crowded, windowless spaces where food is prepared by immigrant workers. Chisholm witnesses hidden mistreatment of waiters, which leads to unprofessional behavior on their part. The job is physically demanding and poorly paid. Waiters are always on the run, balancing heavy trays. Fourteen-hour days, without meal breaks, are common. Sometimes they are cheated out of overtime pay; job security does not exist. Some waiters supplement their incomes with shady side pursuits, from stealing cutlery to selling drugs. Unfinished food and wine are eagerly devoured. Before heading out to a table, a waiter might test the temperature of a sauce with his finger or wipe the rim of a plate with a napkin from the soiled bin. Customers are none the wiser, nor are they aware that, increasingly, the food is pre-cooked, industrially made. Many waiters dream of a different career, knowing they are trapped in this one. They complain incessantly and compete fiercely for tips, and Chisholm excels at evoking their conversations. He sees waiters as pawns in a corrupt system, exploited by bosses intent on maximizing profits; he senses that this culture is widespread. His opulent restaurant, compared to others, “isn’t necessarily the same, but it isn’t much different either” (317). The competitiveness of the restaurant is a microcosm of French life. Everyone is grasping for a higher rung on the ladder, fearful of losing the one they have. “When viewed through the prism of the restaurant, French society—the darker side at least—seems to be built upon a vindictive sort of one-upmanship” (316). Yet despite his stressful job, Chisholm loves Paris, where ordinary people like him live amid great monuments and panoramas. He becomes a respected waiter, proving that he can do it. Then, he decides to leave. It is simply not his calling, and he has other options. Any instructor looking for authentic resources suitable for an advanced French course will find it all here in one place. These high interest multi-media resources come integrated with a plethora of activities designed to target the development of communication skills in interpersonal and presentational modes, both in writing and speaking. The text is organized into six thematic units (Thèmes), each one containing six lessons (Contextes), the last two of which prompt the student to go deeper into the unit’s theme. Each unit ends with a video clip which serves to sharpen listening and interpretive skills. The student is then tasked to use higher level cognitive skills to compose an integrative essay synthesizing the theme. These essays range from simple comparison to opinion and argumentative essays. Students are aided in their analysis by Venn diagrams, flow charts, tables, graphs, and bandes dessinées. One such context in the theme of science and technology is that of making moral choices with regards to sustainable development. Clearly a certain level of sophistication is targeted in these integrative essays. Especially helpful are numerous marginal strategy tips varying from simple ways to paraphrase to the more complicated ways of identifying cause and effect, thus useful in interpretive reading and argumentative writing. Of particular note is attention to language register. Formal and familiar registers are represented in linguistic input and are prompted in student output activities, all of which are carefully scaffolded and fully developed. The attractively presented readings treat a wide range of global and cultural interests. They are relatively short and manageable because they are designed mainly as springboards for student language production. Media reside on the text’s Supersite which is not reviewed here, and which also offers course management tools for instructors. The text is marketed as conforming to the College Board Exam Description and specifically the AP® French Language and Culture Examination. In fact, the text’s six Thèmes align squarely with the six themes required by that exam and the Contextes follow its recommended contexts. In addition, the text’s exercises and activities are geared to support all the communicative tasks tested by the exam. However, this comprehensive compendium of authentic resources at the advanced French language level should not be considered simply or primarily as a tool to “teach to the test” but rather as a powerful support for any advanced course in French language and culture. Jacques Audiard. Manchester UP, 2021. ISBN 978-1-5261-3300-7. Pp. 200. Venu à la réalisation sur le tard après avoir travaillé comme monteur puis comme scénariste (notamment en collaboration avec son père, le dialoguiste Michel Audiard), Jacques Audiard s’est forgé depuis 1994 une filmographie exigeante et restreinte, à mi-chemin entre le cinéma d’art et essai et le cinéma grand public. Couvert de prix dans les festivals et cérémonies en tous genres, il atteint la consécration suprême en 2015 avec l’obtention de la Palme d’or au Festival de Cannes. L’ouvrage éponyme de Gemma King, fouillé et précis, constitue la première monographie consacrée à l’œuvre du réalisateur (exception faite des Olympiades, sorti trop récemment pour être inclus dans le livre). Il applique à la filmographie du réalisateur quelques-unes des thèses qui avaient présidé au précédent ouvrage de l’autrice, Decentring France: Multilingualism and Power in Contemporary French Cinema, qui incluait déjà un chapitre sur Audiard et plaçait les réalisateurs et leurs films dans le contexte d’un cinéma français en pleine mutation. Le champ de la production cinématographique en France favorise en effet l’émergence de réalisateurs transculturels et transnationaux, et Audiard sort du lot dans sa capacité à écrire et filmer un cinéma qui franchit aisément les frontières. Les films du réalisateur offrent ainsi un terrain d’étude privilégié où l’intérêt de Gemma King pour le handicap, les langues désancrées et le cinémamonde peut pleinement se déployer. Organisé en trois chapitres, le livre explore dans un premier temps le corps abîmé comme site paradoxal d’émancipation, sans pour autant négliger la dimension parfois excessivement genrée (voire à la limite du machisme) du cinéma d’Audiard. Dans le second chapitre, King retravaille la question du héros marginalisé déjà étudiée dans son ouvrage précédent. Elle souligne combien la mobilité socio-économique et culturelle des personnages que propose Audiard repose sur leur capacité à transformer en force des handicaps apparents. (Martin O’Shaughnessy montre dans son dernier livre Looking Beyond Neoliberalism [Edinburgh UP, 2022] combien les personnages audiardiens sont à cet égard des héros néo-libéraux.) Quant au dernier chapitre, centré sur Dheepan et Les frères Sisters, il envisage Audiard comme auteur transnational. Ses personnages franchissent des frontières comme les films qu’ils habitent dépassent les limites des genres qu’explore le réalisateur. Chaque chapitre contient des analyses dont la justesse est enrichie à la fois par les travaux sur Audiard qui ont précédé cette monographie et par les textes les plus importants récemment écrits sur le cinéma français. À la qualité et la rigueur du propos s’adjoint l’élégance de l’écriture. Les descriptions de séquences, en particulier, frappent par leur précision et la délicatesse avec laquelle elles rendent justice aux ima","PeriodicalId":44297,"journal":{"name":"FRENCH REVIEW","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136168173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ISBN 978-2-260-05523-5. Pp. 358. Deux ouvrages nous parlent de spiritualité étoilée de chaleureuses rencontres en France rurale. Wright, journaliste franco-britannique, relate son “mois mendiant” (24), initiation au dépouillement pour son noviciat jésuite. Suivant la règle, il est accompagné dans sa quête (aux deux sens du terme): Benoît Parsac, lui aussi novice tardif dans la quarantaine mais d’une vocation plus ancrée, est son interlocuteur et souffre-douleur durant “sept cent kilomètres” (47). Cheminant sur le GR4 d’Angoulême à Notre-Dame des Neiges, ils rencontrent méfiance et générosité, portes closes et tables ouvertes, vies apaisées et destins mutilés, silences et confessions... Faim, soif, courbatures, ampoules, routes surchauffées et pistes raides martèlent leur quotidien mais cette pauvreté choisie “libère du somnambulisme et de la pesanteur” (265). Ils sillonnent une France cantonale “des bouts de ficelle” (136) qui lutte économiquement, “épuisée, à bout de force” (102). Humbles et paysans frappent par leur densité humaine. Solitudes et peines se confient, “miracle de ces rencontres éphémères” (146). Dans une prose piquetée d’élégance, Wright partage sa joie des “cœurs qui s’épanchent” (153), des paysages, et des vaches débonnaires (148). Las de “cette comédie sociale” (19), il cherche “ces régions du silence” (23) et “un dessaisissement de la maîtrise” (74). Il partage son passé: “comédie professionnelle” (79), amours vaines, débâcle familiale, puis “percée” de la révélation du Christ qui montre “que le fond du réel est pailleté d’or comme les icônes des orthodoxes” (81). Il n’a rien et veut effacer ses traces, comme les “anciens ermites taoïstes qui gommaient leur passé et cultivaient le secret” (62), comme l’eau qui coule (329). Il puise dans Rimbaud, de Foucault, Thoreau et d’autres rebelles mystiques car “la vie errante est une ivresse” (49) et “cette vie au seuil de l’instant [lui] procure une allégresse continuelle” (171). Le christianisme institutionnel, clérical, bourgeois le rebute; il cherche “la religion de la vie intense, un grand éclat de rire” (121), “une voie de transformation de l’être, une doctrine de l’éveil, un chemin de liberté” (252) où l’on oublie “tous les savoirs” et les mots (259). Wright se veut pauvre mais fréquente richement Cioran, Pourrat, Vialatte, et évoque Sylvain Tesson et Immortelle Randonnée (2013) de Jean-Christophe Rufin. Projections de soi: identités et images en mouvement dans l’autofiction. PU Lyon, 2022. ISBN 978-2-7297-1379-9. Pp. 324. One might wonder what remains to be said about autofiction, especially when so many authors to whom the label is applied reject it. Is it not, after all, merely another way of describing first-person life-writing, similar to yet somehow distinct from autobiography and memoir? Projections de soi demonstrates that this is but one way of looking at the matter. If autofiction can indeed be seen as its own sous-genre, Élise Hugueny-Léger uses the term subversively both to highlight the scorn often heaped upon it and to contest its classification as a genre en soi. More than that, she pushes the definition beyond this initial understanding: autofiction is alternately a sign of the times, a theoretical stance, a narrative strategy, a media phenomenon, even a way of being and moving in and through the world. All of this is explored using a wide-ranging theoretical apparatus and points of comparison from le Nouveau Roman to crime fiction, from mainstream biopics to little-known experimental films. Included in the study are Serge Doubrovsky, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Marguerite Duras, Annie Ernaux, Christine Angot, Georges Perec, Emmanuel Carrère, Amélie Nothomb, Delphine de Vigan, Chloé Delaume, Laetitia Masson, Sophie Calle, Camille Laurens, and Jean-Philippe Toussaint. The author successfully includes a mix of male and female figures, as well as a wide range of writers, filmmakers, and media personalities. One notes too that some are well-known intellectuals, while others are known primarily in more media-centric spheres, although the reader soon understands that in actual practice, this distinction is not so easily made. Indeed, as the title indicates, this is a study of projection and of image in both a psychosocial sense and in the sense of media production. How are authors and creators presented in the media, particularly television and film? How do they present themselves? How do these media in turn shape them and their creative works? How do various works shape each other? Although the study relies primarily upon sustained textual analysis, a series of stills near the end of the fourth chapter helps illustrate the author’s answers to these questions. Throughout, halls of mirrors and refracted echoes provide apt metaphors not only for the subjects of study, but also for the reader’s experience of the present text. Hugueny-Léger ignores binary oppositions, preferring instead continuums and arguments that bounce among three or more poles. Similarly, she revels in polysemy, playing with layers of meaning in order to expand possibilities for interpretation and understanding. L’horizon écologique des fictions contemporaines. Droz, 2022. ISBN 978-9-070-48934-2. Pp. 344. Cet ouvrage tombe à point pour tous ceux et toutes celles qui s’intéressent à l’approche écopoétique en théorie littéraire, depuis longtemps ou récemment, car il donne des clés essentielles pour comprendre ce qu’est l’écopoétique aujourd’hui, ainsi que de nombreuses pistes concrètes sur les possibilités d’études qu’elle peut engendrer. Cette approche concerne des textes qui font partie de ce qu’on peut appeler la littérature environnementale, ou qui se prêtent à une lecture rapprochée du rapport des humains à la nature, aux animaux ou aux plantes. Les trois éditeurs ont tous précédemment publié dans ce domaine, surtout Pierre Schoentjes souvent cité par les autres auteurs dans le livre, notamment son ouvrage Ce qui a lieu: essai d’écopoétique (2015). Le livre est divisé en cinq parties égales: les essais de la première partie, “Environnements littéraires”, s’intéressent à la discipline écopoétique, son évolution, ses caractéristiques et ses problématiques. On comprendra dès lors que l’écopoétique “s’attache à une lecture serrée des textes” (15), du lieu du récit, de la place des personnages dans un écosystème du vivant. Cela se confirme dans les deuxième et troisième parties, “Présence du non-humain” et “Imaginaire de l’oikos”, sur la place des animaux et l’importance du lieu dans divers romans. Ces deux parties sont riches par le contenu des articles qui les composent, les concepts dégagés des textes, mais aussi par l’approche analytique écopoétique que les auteurs mettent en place pour dégager et expliquer les connections que cette approche permet d’établir. En effet, les auteurs y déploient des analyses de passages, de phrases, de mots qui démontrent une grande attention à la langue et aux “modes esthétiques” (249) que les auteurs et autrices de fiction mobilisent pour libérer leur écriture du réflexe anthropomorphique, notamment par l’usage de configurations syntaxiques (80), de métaphores (98) ou, au contraire, le refus de la métaphore (123), par le rythme (211), par “l’élaboration d’un nouvel imaginaire de la nature” (266). En cela sont offerts des exemples à suivre pour qui souhaiterait à son tour développer des lectures écopoétiques, surtout de textes littéraires, mais on peut tout à fait envisager la même approche dans le cinéma et l’art visuel, même si ce n’est pas le cas ici. Les parties IV et V se répondent. La première, “Bouleversements environnementaux”, regroupe des articles sur les menaces environnementales (la disparition des espèces, les déchets, les catastrophes nucléaires) alors que la seconde, “Engagements”, se propose d’étudier les stratégies de résistance dans des récits de science-fiction, écoféministes, francophones des Antille","PeriodicalId":44297,"journal":{"name":"FRENCH REVIEW","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136167600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nassaney Randa J. Duvick Hartley, Erika K. and Michael S. Nassaney. People of the Post. Western Michigan UP, 2022. ISBN 979-8-42585-728-6. Pp. 75. This book is one of a series presenting and interpreting the archaeological site of colonial French Fort St. Joseph in southwest Michigan. The fort was established by the French on the St. Joseph River in 1691, came under English control after 1763, and was abandoned in the 1780s; archaeological investigation of the fort’s site started in 1998. The investigation is run by the Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project, a “multidisciplinary, collaborative […] project in historical archaeology aimed at investigating the fur trade and colonialism in southwest Michigan” (10). Although today there are no signs of the fort aboveground, digs each year yield artifacts that shed light on the lives of the French and Native Americans who lived there in the eighteenth century. The four short books published by the project aim to help a lay audience better understand the historical context of the fort and its material culture. Although this volume—like the others in the series—deals specifically with Fort St. Joseph, it nonetheless illuminates the history of the French colonial presence in the entire western Great Lakes area, known in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as the pays d’en haut. Placing the fort in its economic and cultural contexts, the book explores the lives of those who lived there, the “people of the post,” by examining the many archaeological artifacts found onsite as well as historical documents like business and military records, letters, and journals. One of the merits of this book is that it takes care to introduce a variety of people. Readers meet the post’s French speakers, both individuals like the fort’s blacksmith, Antoine Deshêtres, and groups like Jesuit missionaries and French soldiers. Fur traders and voyageurs were, of course, present at Fort St. Joseph, and the book helpfully traces the history of this trade, showcasing related artifacts found at the fort such as lead seals from trade-cloth bales, silver brooches, and glass beads. Descriptions of the lives of women and children—including métis children who were born of the unions between French and Natives—help give a rounded portrait of life at the post. Sections telling about both the earliest Native American inhabitants of the area and the Potawatomi, who lived in the area when the French established the fort and still reside there today, create a nuanced presentation of the complicated cultural world of the pays d’en haut. Lavishly illustrated with maps, photographs of artifacts found on site, and pictures of reenactors portraying the eighteenth-century people of the post, this volume is an attractive and useful introduction to the period of France’s colonization of the Upper Midwest that avoids a romanticized picture of “voyageur life.” With both in-depth por","PeriodicalId":44297,"journal":{"name":"FRENCH REVIEW","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136168895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
