{"title":"Use of Narrative in Teaching Appreciation of Instrumental Music: Focusing on Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 \"Fate\"","authors":"Dae Chang Ju","doi":"10.30775/kmes.53.1.217","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30775/kmes.53.1.217","url":null,"abstract":"Instrumental music is not easy to deal with the appreciation education because the musical content is highly abstract. Moreover, since the phrase \"appreciate music\" is often used in schools, there is a tendency to immediately encounter difficult instrumental music as objects of appreciation rather than objects of listening. This study highlights the terminological relation between appreciation and listening and suggests that teachers make use of narrative materials which enable to show the musical structure of the piece. As exemplified in Beethoven's \"Fate\" Symphony, the value of the work can be appreciated by examining the entire flow of the piece. In order to lead listeners to musical imagnation, there are already some narrative materials in visual forms for this piece, but pictures tend to hinder students from chasing musical expression. Therefore, the researcher instantiates how to develop narrative materials in wording. For this purpose, this paper utilizes a literature research method to examine India’s curriculum documents, focusing on items such as 'document structure', 'competency', 'rationale and aims', 'content system and achievement standards' and ‘teaching & learning and assessment’ according to the components of Korea's 2022 revised music curriculum. The four music generators that satisfy following three conditions were chosen as the subject of study: create music automatically, have the variety of voices, and input contents contain musical elements. Then three music works were created by each chosen generator and analyzed. The analysis of music was based on the elemental analysis that have been using traditionally in Western Music. The sub-analysis elements were selected based on the contents presented in the music curriculum, and those are rhythm, melody, harmony, and form. As a conclusion of the study, musical works created by an AI music generator utilize various rhythms and melodic elements, but there is partial mismatch in harmony and form. Another conclusion is that the AI music generator creates the music the machine wants, and the user's own musical capabilities are required to obtain the music the user wants. The creative area newly presented in the resent revised 2022 music curriculum is presented to help students understand the value and influence of music in a changing society and expand their perspectives on music. To achieve this objective, an examination was conducted on 28 academic papers and theses, exploring the theoretical background of achievement standards and the Standards Movement in the United States. The research findings indicate a prevalence of academic papers over theses in achievement standards-related research, with a significant focus on studies analyzing achievement standards. Literature review emerged as the predominant research method, and research was conducted more extensively in elementary, high school, and middle school levels, in that order. An analysis of the frequency of achievement standards revealed a uniform occurrence across most standards, excluding the 2009 revised curriculum. Consequently, it is deemed necessary to conduct research on achievement standards with diverse topics and methodologies. The study also investigates the effectiveness and significance of the program. The purpose of this program is to provide students with meaningful artistic experiences by consciously paying attention to sound as \"artists of life,\" creating music pieces with intention, and reflecting on sound and music. The program is divided into two parts: Part 1, \"Understanding Sound,\" based on M. Schafer's concept of Soundscapes, and Part 2, consisting of \"Soundscape Design\" and \"Reflection\" phases. The results of the reflection questions show that through the Soundscape Design activities, students underwent changes in their perception of sound and music. They gained the realization that an artist is not necessarily a great figure, but rather an ordinary person like themselves, capable of becoming an artist, dealing with struggles. Moreover, their perception changed regarding artworks, understanding that art requires considerable time and effort, holds intention and meaning, provides new perspectives, and encompasses everyday life.
