The study shows how the author transforms the medieval mystery genre to implement philosophical and aesthetic ideas. The main method of research is comparative-historical. “The Life of Man” is considered in the historical and literary aspect, which includes a comparison with artistic phenomena similar in genre. The article presents the results of a systematic analysis of the content and structural parameters of the genre: type of content, spatial-temporal organization, genre motivations, associative background, composition, main acting persons and conflict. The results obtained allow us to conclude that the fundamental elements of the medieval mystery genre are preserved in the drama “The Life of Man”: framing the action with the speech of the herald, the absence of external dramatic action, simultaneity, the conventionality of stage time and space, epicness of time and space, the combination of mystical and realistic, mythologicality. Mystery and “The Life of Man” are also united by a tendency towards cyclization. Andreyev constructs a new experimental synthetic form using elements of ancient tragedy (prologue, chorus), reinterpreting the schematicity and simplicity of folk theater, taking into account modern trends in world drama. At the same time, the mystery is the dominant genre. {"title":"Inference pragmatics of the interjection hm in stress interaction (based on the medical consultations of an oncologist and a cancer patient)","authors":"Tatiana A. The analysis was conducted based on the material of 12 transcripts of the dialogues in German language between oncologists and female patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Utterances of patients with a vocal gesture expressed by the interjection hm are the subject of this study. The purpose of the article is to determine the communicative functions in the intentional structure of the analyzed dialogues, taking the situational, social and cultural context into account, as well as the correlation with the physician’s remarks, and syntactic position hm in the utterance. The article presents quantitative analysis, analyses their lexical composition, determines intentional and semantic relationship of the generation of the sound signal hm and the physician’s remarks. Two main types of utterances were distinguished: hm as a separate utterance step, as well as hm as part of the phrase including other interjections and content words (in the initial and/or the final and interposition part of the utterance). Context-specific functions were identified for this type of utterances: 1) emotive; 2) establishing and maintaining contact; 3) pause filling; 4) signal; 5) listener activation; 6) imperative; 7) (de)intensification. {"title":"Wajda’s Dostoevsky and Foucault’s heterotopia","authors":"Lyubov D. Bugaeva","doi":"10.21638/spbu09.2022.307","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21638/spbu09.2022.307","url":null,"abstract":"National paradigms in cinematography are increasingly giving way to a transnational paradigm: cinema is becoming polylocal. Polylocality first means locations not tied to one particular country and an international cast and crew. It also corresponds to the merging of two or more multicultural spaces interacting in the process of filmmaking that results in creating a kind of master space, which is more than their sum. Such understanding is based on the Henri Lefebvre’s definition of space as a product where the mental and the cultural, the social and the historical, are interconnected. Polylocality, as a rule, takes place in film adaptations of literary works made in a tradition different from the culture of the literary source and distant from it in time and/or in space. Examples include Nastazja (1994) by Polish director Andrzej Wajda that creates a special kind of cinematic space, to which the notion of polylocality applies to a greater extent than to many other screen adaptations. The paper attempts to outline this special space in the context of Michel Foucault’s ideas about heterotopia as a special location, illusory and real, open and closed, permeable and sealed, where the order of things is different. The research aims to observe the dynamic processes in the vocabulary: the intensity and usage frequency of the key discourse words, neologisms, borrowings, the reflection processes of important social and political events in the vocabulary. The research is based on the DIMEAN multilevel linguistic and discourse analysis model, elements of corpus analysis, concordance compilation with AntConc program and Voyant Tools web application, as well as methods of dictionary definitions and contextual semantic analysis. The material of the study is based on the current theme-based publications from the German news website Der Spiegel dated 2020 and 2022. Structuring the material into two sub-corps (according to the year, 50 articles each) enables to demonstrate a linguistic analysis of a specific time period and present our observations on lexical changes of German COVID-19 pandemic media discourse. The study applies both traditional and modern methods of computer analysis of modern media discourse that is relevant to the current linguistic study approach. The new multilevel comparative analysis of the theme-based media discourse by means of corpus analysis allows to track lexical changes and to observe the dynamics and evaluation of topics in the socio-political discourse. {"title":"To the question of the poetics of the Antiochus Cantemir’s poems","authors":"N. The poetic practice of Kantemir is compared with the recommendations from the treatises of Feofan Prokopovich De arte poetica and De arte rhetorica libri X, concerning the use of various rhetorical devices in certain literary genres and styles. The hypothesis of the work is the assumption of the synthetic nature of the poetic syllable of Antiochus Kantemir, which is close not so much to the classicistic requirements of clarity and accuracy of the syllable as to the traditions of the Old Russian book style of weaving words. For the first time undertaken comprehensive analysis of tropes and figures used by Kantemir in his poetry, testifies to their qualitative and quantitative diversity and to the familiarity of the creator of Russian satire. The system of Kantemir tropes and figures analyzed in grammatical, stylistic and linguo-poetic aspects are introduced into scientific use for the first time. Inversion, ellipsis, amplification, lexical repetition, question and exclamation are the most common types of rhetorical devices in Kantemir’s poetry. Comparison, metonymy, personification and paraphrase are much more rare and genre conditioned in the works of Kantemir. The marginal varieties of tropes and figures of Kantemir include hyperbole, gradation, chiasm, silence, pun. This text for the first time became the subject of philological analysis using comparative and contextual-functional methods. The director’s published comments allow tracing the path from the literary screenplay itself to the film text. As a result of the sampling of linguistic material, which reveals the presence of the possible world of the film text in the script, the specificity of its categories (integrity, coherence, completeness, dynamics, etc.) was revealed. The possible world of cinema text determines the a priori variability and uncertainty of the script text. The article reflects the features of the scenario functioning of lexical-grammatical and syntactic language means. The screenplay and the film text are interdependent, but not identical entities. It has been established that the development of the technical parameters of the film text has an indirect effect on the film script. One of the aims of the study is to critically analyze the notions that the screenplay does not have the merits of a literary text. In the course of analyzing the presence of a possible world of film text, the working hypothesis was confirmed that a film script is a text with a motivated violation of communicative and pragmatic norms (accuracy, relevance, expressiveness). These scholias are written on the margins of the manuscript to the poems of Gregory the Theologian do not find analogues among the known interpretations. A comparative analysis of the translations of verses and commentaries allowed us to draw a conclusion about the creative approach of Arseniy Grek. The article describes the principles of processing by Arseniy Grek of the source text and the main stylistic and linguistic features of his translation. This is the dissemination of the text by Christian exegesis and biblical quotations and reminiscences, the introduction of new semantic nuances, the use of vocabulary borrowed from Church Slavonic translations, a deviation from the syntactic constructions of the modern Greek source. It is concluded that the technique of translating Gregory the Theologian’s poems and interpretations to them depends not only on the translator’s knowledge of the source language, but also on the literary form (poetry and prose) and on the authority of the original. {"title":"Cyril of Jerusalem catechetical lectures: To linguistic and textual history of the 13th century Tolstovskii manuscript","authors":"M. Novak, Yana A. Penkova","doi":"10.21638/spbu09.2022.208","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21638/spbu09.2022.208","url":null,"abstract":"The article presents a study of catechetical lectures by Cyril of Jerusalem in the Tolstovskii sbornik (collection) from the 13th century (RNB, F.p.I.39) in comparison with four manuscripts from the 11th–17th centuries. Considering lexical, derivational, and grammatical variations, the authors conclude that the Tolstovskii manuscript has much more archaic features in common with three representatives of the MSS from the “family Sin” (they are three MSS from 11th–16th centuries). At the same time, it looks closer to the manuscript from the 16th–17th centuries (RSL, f. 256, N.P.Rumiantsev collection, no. 194) at the grammatical level. Simultaneously, the grammatical commonality of the Tolstovskii and Rumiantsev manuscripts is also not associated with the later editing but better reflects the original readings of translation than the manuscripts from the “family Sin.” Along with general readings, the Tolstovskii copy is characterized by many special readings that do not coincide with any MSS involved in the analysis. Some of these readings better convey the Greek original text, while others, on the contrary, reflect the result of later distortions. The manuscript does not contain consistent “Preslav” revision traces, although one can sporadically find some East Bulgarian lexemes in it (since many of them are also present in other copies, one cannot consider them as a result of later revisions). Nevertheless, the archaic Cyril and Methodius’ translation layer, both in vocabulary and grammar, turns out to be predominant. {"title":"Social imaginary of a literary technique: About dynamics of transitivity in Russian literature of the late 19th century (Dostoevsky, Garshin, Chekhov)","authors":"I. I analyze various approaches to the phenomenon of transition and criteria used for their identification. I suggest that we should pay more attention to internal substance of transition process than the role of sociocultural factors or external features which reflect changes in literature. The problems are discussed using the texts by Dostoevsky, Garshin and Chekhov who represent in many respects transitional epoch of the late 19th century. Chronologically, their oeuvres belong to adjacent periods, and so it is possible to trace the changes as a process but not as a set of typological attributes. The comparative analysis is focused on the motive of response as the generalized literary technique, and differences in its use demonstrate transformations of various zones of the literary field — from author’s intention and reader’s reception to the techniques of the creation of narration. For all three Russian writers, the search of “new ways” and strategic decisions are connected with readers’ activity, although each of them understands it in his own way. Dostoevsky and Garshin believe that literature should recover social consensus, and the response plays the principal role here. For Chekhov, response ceased to be a goal. In his system, response is a constant critical defamiliarization of any point of view and gives way to a new type of social interaction. {"title":"The legacy of Sea Island Creole English: Sociolinguistic features of Gullah","authors":"A. Sebryuk","doi":"10.21638/spbu09.2022.111","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21638/spbu09.2022.111","url":null,"abstract":"This paper builds on the renewed interest in preserving the multiethnic origins of the United States and recognizing a profound impact of the Black experience on the American nation. The article centers on the Gullah language, one of the primary roots of modern African American English and the only remaining English-related Creole language in North America. The pidgin language, which originally evolved as a medium of communication between slaves from various regions of Africa and their owners, is still spoken by Black communities across coastal regions of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. While inland African American English (AAE) has received much attention in linguistic circles over past decades, relatively little research has been done on varieties of AAE spoken in the rural American South. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the origin and history of Gullah and to present a linguistic description of its most peculiar features. The Gullah language represents a combination of English and Central and West African languages. Geographical isolation, predominance of the Black population, and social and economic independence contributed to its development and survival. Also, in contrast with inland African Americans, the Gullah Geechee communities historically have had little contact with whites. Several folktales written in Gullah have been analyzed for discussing its persistent patterns. Characterizing Gullah is important for our increased understanding of the origins of AAE.
