Razuvalova","doi":"10.21638/spbu09.2022.311","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21638/spbu09.2022.311","url":null,"abstract":"The author focuses on the recent film adaptation of the iconic work of village prose — the novel tetralogy Brothers and Sisters by Fyodor Abramov. Teimuraz Esadze’s TV series Two Winters and Three Summers (2014), which was shown on Russia 1, is considered as a part of a large-scale process that sociologist Boris Dubin has called reconciliation with the Soviet past (an important symptom of this process was a wave of film adaptations of Soviet classics in the second half of the 2000–2010s). Insisting that Abramov’s novels are classics of Russian litera ture, Esadze sought to extract from them, first, relevant formulas of collective identity, and second, explanatory models capable of shedding light on social processes in late- and post Soviet society. In the article, the way the director uses the conceptual apparatus and imagina tive and rhetorical system of village prose is interpreted as an attempt to reanimate the critical discourse of late-Soviet neopochvennichestvo in new conditions. The article examines the am bivalent strategy of Esadze’s TV series, on the one hand, oriented toward a precise reproduc tion of Abramov’s text, and on the other hand, taking into account the narrative and figurative logic of the TV series, usually addressed to a mass audience. {"title":"Themes of gospel and nativity in Icelandic biblical paraphrase","authors":"Nataliia L. Ogurechnikova","doi":"10.21638/spbu09.2022.203","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21638/spbu09.2022.203","url":null,"abstract":"The article examines stanzas 27–33 from “Lilja”, an Icelandic biblical paraphrase written in the form of skaldic drapa and dating from the first half of the XIV c. The subject of the article is the sources of these stanzas and the nature of the skald’s work with the sources. Comparative textual analysis, which is the main method of work, has shown that the skald borrowed the general idea of the text from the Bible of Herman de Valenciennes, and stanzas 27–33, where the theme of the Gospel sounds, are an adaptation of a fragment from “Conception Nostre Dame” (“The Conception of the Virgin”) by Wace (lines 783–864). Analysis of the forms of speech and narrative strategies in stanzas 27–33 has shown their convergence with the forms of speech characteristic of “The Elder Edda” and the use of eddic narrative strategies by the skald. The focus is on the main factors that determine the features of communication of young users, namely, the linguistic situation of dialect-literary diglossia in German-speaking Switzerland, the reflection on writing of the features of oral youth communication, the influence of Web 2.0 technologies. The analysis of authentic material made it possible to establish that the daily written communication of young people is carried out mainly in dialect, which corresponds to its desire for informal and irregular communication. Along with dialect Swiss youth have in written communication their arsenal of language tools and techniques for the implementa tion of specifically youth strategies and tactics. When communicating in the messenger, young German-Swiss use a variety of techniques of playing with language and means of delimitation and alienation from the usual, normative. The game with alien linguistic means: the German literary standard, English, ethnolects are most often implemented when communicating in the messenger on the principle of code-switching or mixing different language forms. The bi- and multilingualism in Kazakhstan is caused by its long standing multiethnicity. Thus, the socio-cultural context in Kazakhstan provides a special angle on the issue of bilingualism and code mixing and differs from bilingual and code-mixed practices caused be active migration processes in the 20th century. The study, first, presents the main outcomes of the sociolinguistics and its new frameworks and methodological applications. Second, the paper analyzes the traditional approaches to Kazakh-Russian bilingualism and the factors that influence the Kazakhs and Russians in using code mixing. The suggested study is guided by the following research question: how consciously and intentionally proceeds the switching between the in the Kazakh and Russian languages and how the hybrid practice is evaluated by the participants of communication. In the questionnaire design the quantitative perspective on research questions asked (where? when?) was extended by its qualitative perspective (how? why?). We demonstrate that there are no fixed ties between educational level of the speakers and their linguistic competence and the language mixed practice, that is not to be labelled in pejorative terms as linguistic errors. The adjective in such construction is a predicate adjective that assigns semantic roles and category features to its arguments. The rection of the adjective is a transitive usage of adjective, and the adjectives that enable such usage are included in the inter-part-of-speech lexico-semantic field of relation. The topicality of the research is determined by insufficient knowledge of rection of the adjective in the modern Romanic studies. This paper offers a new systemic approach to the predicate adjectives of relation and their semantic valences. Prototypical attributes, relevant to the French transitive adjectives, were formulated. It was established that predicate adjectives of relation constitute a dynamical system and are disposed according to the degree of expression of their features from the center to the periphery inside the system and its sub-systems. As a result, semantic roles of predicative actants of each particular system were described and the role of hidden grammar categories of nouns in the differentiation of meanings of governing adjectives and of their explicitly expressed arguments was elucidated. Methods used are contextual analysis, componential analysis, synonymic transformation and paraphrasing. Among 206 proper names and 77 epithets are definitions containing emotional assessment: crazy Africa (“Love Island”), kingly Niger (“Niger”) and color characteristics: golden Baghdad (“Pilgrim”), green Siberia (“Sahara”) prevailed. The epithet in genitival constructions usually refers to the main word of the nominal group: Tsargrad's golden gate (“Sweden”), green waves of the Euphrates (“Adam's Dream”), but in the periphrases it can be given to a geographical name: the queen of boundless Rus (i. e. Moscow, “Muzhik”). The analysis of the most common definitions (distant, remote; ancient; mysterious) showed that the epithet in the poetic text conveys several dictionary meanings, and its semantics are befogged by contextual connotations. Thus, the epithet distant to the topopoetonym Siberia (“Modernity”) express the idea of remoteness both in time and space, while the image of Siberia opens up a special space of poetic world — a place where the past continues in the present. In the poem “Galla”, the idea of opposing different cultures, is conveyed through the image of remote and wild Russia, as it is presented through the voice of a teacher of Islam. The definition ancient (“Words to Davydov's music”, “Rhodes”) in Gumilyov's poems also creates a temporal perspective of poetic description, has a positive connotation referring to high importance of the object designated by the topopoetonym, while the epithet mysterious (e. g. Working on the novel Salambbô (1862), Flaubert foresaw its ill fortunes in modern France and in the modern epoch as a whole. Since the 1890s, many representatives of Russian modernism saw a teacher and a predecessor in the French writer and translated his works (I.Bunin, D.Merezhkovsky, K.Balmont, M.Gorky, N.Minsky, Al. Chebotarevskaya, M.Voloshin, A.Blok, Vyach. Ivanov, B.Zaitsev, M.Kuzmin). A line from Balmont’s poem The World Communion (1905) — O seeking Flaubert, you have foreseen us — can serve as an illustration of Flaubert’s Russian fate. In general, the interest in Salambbô is explained by an acute interest in exotic epochs and countries, a desire to distance oneself from vulgar, bourgeois in modernity, a heroine whose image is built on the intersection of mystical and erotic elements in woman’s life, а striving for perfection in the mastery of word. Peculiarities of the language material presented in the man ual are investigated. Deviations from the traditional German language description scheme are fixed: assignment of three article types; viewing a person as a nominal category, complicat ing system of verb tenses etc. We append the results of the research conducted by K.Koch (2002) and. conclude, that in addition to J.Bödiker’s work directly referred to in the manual, its author was influenced by the works of linguists from “Fruitbearing Society”: K. von Stieler, J.Clajus, and Ch. Gueintz. The author also relied on French grammar by J.R.Pepliers. The article analyzes the textbook illustrative material. Quotations from the Gospel, Psalms, evan gelic hymns, and catechistic literature were often used as examples. However, it also contained a heretical example — mentioning of Lucifer among angels. The latter, possibly, explains the mysterious circumstances of the manual publication. It was issued in Berlin in 1713 without indicating its printing house. The author also hid his real name. {"title":"The meeting of a Russian with Europe in the travel writings of Peter the Great’s era (A.A.Matveev)","authors":"Andrei Iu. They are usually considered as naive works, and content of these works as identical to the biographies of it’s authors. The method of historical and linguistic research of V.M.Zhivov on the language of Russian writing is applied to the material of travelogues. The main purpose is to account for the pragmatics of the utterance in travel literature as in a phenomenon synthesizing heterogeneous features in principle and in the transitional Peter’s Era in particular. The paper is focused on the notes of the diplomat A.A.Matveev, compiled by him for himself as a result of his journey from the Hague to Paris (1705–1706). The narrative technique in Matveev’s text is examined (descriptions of the monuments of the French capital and the inscriptions to them in Latin), and it is shown that we should not reduce the function of Matveev’s work to purely diplomatic tasks of his actual journey. The descriptions recorded in Matveev’s text were politically charged: the author not only collected samples of inscriptions, but also demonstrated a new way for Russia to glorify the reigning monarch. This peculiar collection of Matveev is also considered in the context of cultural phenomena that were relevant at the beginning of the 18th century: private and court collections of rarities, embossing of commemorative medals, etc. The conclusion is made that borrowed elements change their function in the travelogue. In the historical and literary perspective, we must bring such works as Matveev’s notes out of the zone of marginal literary phenomena. In general, this allows us to see the key trends of the transitional period of the history of Russian literature. {"title":"Sergey Eisenstein: Director’s interpretation of Alexander Rzheshevsky’s screenplay Bezhin Meadow","authors":"S. Ogudov","doi":"10.21638/spbu09.2022.310","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21638/spbu09.2022.310","url":null,"abstract":"This article examines the interpretation of Alexander Rzheshevsky’s screenplay Bezhin Mea dow by Sergey Eisenstein. Comparison of different versions of the script reveals the emergence of the film’s conception and changes of the narrative made during the transition from the screenplay to the shooting script. Special attention was given to Eisenstein’s interpretation of the three key episodes of the future film: siege of the church, highway episode, and defeat of the church. The reduction of narrative distance and the growth of the scale of an event are exemplified are exemplifies by the scene of the siege of the church. From this point of view the shelling of peasants from the church and the subsequent assault evoke episodes from Battle ship “Potemkin” and October. The interpretation of the highway episode is based on the use of visual and aural counterpoint. Eisenstein finds the equivalent of the spoken word through the use of the contrasting montage that combines images with speech, noise and music. Eisen stein strengthens the role of religious reminiscences in the central episode of the defeat of the church while showing the destruction of religious objects. Each of these episodes in a way or another implies violence and oriented to the expression of traumatic experience. In this sense Rzheshevsky’s screenplay echoed Eisenstein’s creative preoccupations. It made possible the depiction of historical events in such a way that history itself becomes a substitute for this experience.
