Various theoretical models have been examined in search for principles at work in deciding what has to be kept and what has to be dropped. The model proposed incorporates several approaches to the analysis of discourse. An examination of two French films subtitled in English brings out sharp contrast. It is maintained that these contrasts relate systematically to the hypothesis that reductions in screen translation are systematic and not random.","PeriodicalId":398879,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives-studies in Translatology","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114321676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors describe a course which was developed for students of Italian in their final year at university. There are limitations in the system, in so far as it can only partially imitate real life, but on the other hand, modern students are at ease with computers. The program has a main menu, a screen providing them with background information, a description of the situation (in English and Italian), an interview presented in questions and answers, the interview in its entirety, the original as well as their own renditions of it.","PeriodicalId":398879,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives-studies in Translatology","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121520984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basic notion of speech act theory is a notion of an illocutionary force. An illocutionary force consists of seven components. When all these components in the illocutionary force are equal in the source language and the target language utterances, the illocutionary acts can be considered as equal in the two languages. The present article discusses a number of cases when illocutionary forces do not coincide. This may be due to, for instance, disregard for social relations between communicants in the text of translation, different communicative levels of interaction in the original and in the translation, incongruence between components of an illocutionary force in the source language and the target language, and so on.","PeriodicalId":398879,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives-studies in Translatology","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126228770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In subtitling, as in all forms of interlingual transfer, this may cause problems in rendering culture‐specific or language‐specific elements. The author discusses strategies available to the subtitlers confronted with such phenomena in films. The strategies range from verbatim transfer, via culturally neutral explicitation and paraphrase, to target language adaptation. Four French feature films are analysed with reference to the way extra‐lingual culture‐specific elements are rendered in Danish subtitles. The author discusses which factors to consider when deciding on an appropriate strategy. The analysis shows a tendency, possibly norm‐governed, toward retaining the local flavor of the film, yet remaining faithful to the source language expression whenever possible.","PeriodicalId":398879,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives-studies in Translatology","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126432852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This enables them to survive the ravages of time and reach out to future generations. A semiotic approach to translation ‐ semio‐translation ‐ explains the kinetic and ephemeral nature of all translational activity. According to her expressive stereotype, communicative attitude, etc., the translator will choose and decide which macro‐ and micro‐strategies to follow in order to bridge the spatio‐temporal gap: either approximating the translated version to the original, or moving away from it towards the target structure, culture, and expectations. These polarities ‐ historization/modernization, exoticism/naturalization ‐ determine the diachronic and diaspatial dynamics of translation of the classics.","PeriodicalId":398879,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives-studies in Translatology","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115756401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To retain to the utmost extent the unique artistic devices and techniques, the flavor, the tone, and the cultural implications of the original, the first choice should be transplantation of images whenever possible, which can be regarded as cultural transplantation. For metaphors that may be entirely maimed through transplantation of images in translation owing to the vast distance between the two cultures and languages, cultural transformation, such as image substitution, explanatory notes or total abandonment of the figure of speech should be resorted to in order to make the meaning and function of the original metaphors accessible to the readers of the translated version. It is concluded that selection of a good translation for a metaphor depends on an overall consideration of all elements and on differentiating what is primary from what is secondary in the translator's endeavour to minimize losses of the or...","PeriodicalId":398879,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives-studies in Translatology","volume":"254 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115858520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Interpreters and translators alike have to produce texts which are syntactically, se‐mantically and pragmatically adequate. Translation aims at producing a text which is both totally faithful to the author and editorially acceptable in the target language, whilst interpreting is intended for immediate me by listeners in a communicative situation at a particular time and space. The main difference between translation and interpreting is the time factor. A translation can take hours, days, weeks, months. Interpreting is instantaneous and nearly synchrous. It can be done only once, within a time limit. The examples illustrate that the written form of a speech involves more complex and significantly longer sentences than those occurring in oral speech. The syntax of oral speech is simpler and more colloquial. Translators determine their own rate of processing, whereas the structure of interpret...","PeriodicalId":398879,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives-studies in Translatology","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133208712","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main explanation seems to be that generally translators consider Tagore ‘difficult’, indeed ‘untranslatable’. The author points out that this attitude comes to connect with selection of poems for translation and the difficulties of accepting translation at all and in an inadequate understanding of the poetic creation. It is discussed how Tagore's language is unique, and how poems interrelate with others by Tagore, and even the author's innermost thoughts. Arguing that provided translators come to an intensive understanding of Tagore's teas in a translational dialogue and when it is accepted that Tagore's complete work can also be viewed as one text, the author believes that adequate, if not perfect translations are possible.","PeriodicalId":398879,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives-studies in Translatology","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123437525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
