The ability to translate and foreign language proficiency

Abstract

Abstract The article explores the relationship between the ability to translate and foreign language proficiency. The authors developed a battery of tests based on established techniques ('cloze') and formats (multiple‐choice). The development work is described in detail and so are the findings, which conclude that foreign language profiency is, in itself, no guarantee that people can translate.
