With the increase in the use of networks for teaching purposes, the use of streaming videos is now one of the possibilities to be reckoned with in trying to increase flexibility in studies. Specially recorded on-demand videos provide the students with better chances to decide when, where and how to study. Information on how students use on-demand videos can be obtained, apart from student questionnaires, from the log files of a media server. These files offer an information source that, on the one hand, is diverse but, on the other, cumbersome and less used. This article examines, with the help of the log files of the media server, matters related to time and place dependence and the use of videos by the students. The investigation is based on the analysis of the log data entered about videos transmitted during the master's education programme in information technology in 2008.","PeriodicalId":220847,"journal":{"name":"2009 EAEEIE Annual Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129333363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the Department of Electrical Engineering, preference was given to applying methods integrating technology in the learning and then evaluating the outcomes. Problem-based learning (PBL) was used as an instructional strategy of active learning, and adapted for use in Lighting Design course. In cooperative learning, students work together in small groups in an organized way, on a well-ordered activity. They are individually responsible for their work; on the other hand, the work of the group as a whole is also assessed. Teams need to be small enough so that everyone can play a part. And the students' work must be clearly defined. By applying PBL it is expected that students work in a cooperative and collaborative learning way, developing positive interdependence, individual accountability, face-to-face promotive interaction, as well as group processing. Students see the potential of the method. PBL addresses many of the concerns of teachers and professional organizations. Above all, it encourages students to be in charge of their education. It emphasizes critical thinking skills, understanding, learning how to learn, and working cooperatively with others. The benefits of PBL in the Lighting Design course are seen in the way students improved the study and analysis of a Lighting Design project. This method can also be seen as a benefit for Electrical Engineering programme where educators strive for improved teaching and learning.","PeriodicalId":220847,"journal":{"name":"2009 EAEEIE Annual Conference","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129378060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ICT tools were therefore designed with this scenario in mind. Nevertheless, today's learning process is still predominantly face-to-face; at most, we have seen a shift towards blended learning. Today we are in the process of incorporating ICT tools both inside and outside of the classroom. In this paper, we explore how contents—specifically physics contents—can be used optimally either inside or outside of the classroom.","PeriodicalId":220847,"journal":{"name":"2009 EAEEIE Annual Conference","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121949467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, opinions on what different authors consider a virtual laboratory lead us to very disparate interpretations, with the consequent lack of consensus. In this work we focus on VL applied to e-learning in technical studies. The state-of-the-art concerning these laboratories is reviewed in order to find the goals that a VL has to achieve and the requirements that it has to accomplish and it is proposed a 6 steps process to design and implement a VL. Finally, a definition of VL is proposed and it is analysed to what extent current VL satisfy this definition and all the suggested requirements.","PeriodicalId":220847,"journal":{"name":"2009 EAEEIE Annual Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125398153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Officially, they are only considered as one more subject that has to be passed. However, they play a key role in the training of students both before joining an engineering position in a company or continuing with their academic career. This remarkable importance is due to the fact that students must show the skills acquired during their education in a concrete task, representing a great challenge to be overcome before leaving university. The success of students in this task highly depends on its supervision, which has to be helpful and encouraging for them. This paper is intended to be a collection of tips and suggestions to help, both students and supervisors of electrical and information engineering, with the development of the final year project.","PeriodicalId":220847,"journal":{"name":"2009 EAEEIE Annual Conference","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128730663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As content repository grows the ability to easily move content from one platform to another, in case of LMS change or content reallocation becomes more and more important. The use of XML compliant and application independent markup languages has become the more convenient choice because it allows complete independence from software vendors and to use open standards and universal tools for automatic content processing. In spite that these efforts have been more oriented to content packaging, nowadays there are XML languages that cover the whole range of content types (text, graphics, multimedia, etc) making XML also an interesting alternative to author individual content items. In this way interoperability and standard data processing is applied to the whole content hierarchy. Another interesting interoperable standard is Java as it is multiplatform and web oriented it allows developing web deliverable interactive learning applications with a wide range of complexity. In this work we present a summary of our experiences using XML languages and Java to produce and deliver learning content.","PeriodicalId":220847,"journal":{"name":"2009 EAEEIE Annual Conference","volume":"15 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120994326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
