Cooperative learning and data-mining can be combined to foster the knowledge acquisition process of the students. This approach has been introduced in the subject “Análisis de Sistemas Contínuos” in the second term of the first year of the Telecommunication Engineering Degree studies at the Escuela Politécnica Superior de Gandia from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV), Spain. The evaluation method is based on laboratory lessons and seminars. The laboratory lessons include an on-line exam with a specific set of variables targeted for data-mining processing. Interactive groupal seminars are also introduced in the subject. In this case, the accurate knowledge of the skills acquired by individual students is evaluated by which decorrelation techniques on a large set of variables which are also processed in the data-mining.","PeriodicalId":220847,"journal":{"name":"2009 EAEEIE Annual Conference","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115081710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modern engineering students are difficult to motivate in order to learn pure theoretical issues such as solving differential equations. Especially when we talk about undergraduate engineering students, who do not expect to continue their education higher than a Bachelor of Engineering. At the same time, and for the same reason, the fail rate in mathematics and physics is very high during the first two semesters. This was the reason we decided to change the structure of our education and incorporate the theory with practical projects. This paper describes the main points of our program, and shows some examples of semester-projects. Semester projects are the motivating factors. The examination results show improved learning potential, when using this method of educating mathematics and physics. The students' evaluations show a very positive effect on their experience with this “practical” way of learning the theory. The evaluation results have shown higher pass rates and higher grading, especially for the practical oriented students.","PeriodicalId":220847,"journal":{"name":"2009 EAEEIE Annual Conference","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114997438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this paper is to compare between genders the students' feedback on the web course Electricity, Electronics and Environment for the senior secondary school. Also, the results of the exam were analyzed according to gender. According to the feedback for girls the lesson about electric systems was the most interesting and for the boys the usage of electrical appliances. Girls did better in the exam than boys. Girls did better than boys especially in the questions that required traditional memorizing, while in practical questions there was not a remarkable difference.","PeriodicalId":220847,"journal":{"name":"2009 EAEEIE Annual Conference","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127582628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When used in the evaluation process as a tool to assess learning it has obvious benefits since it allows students to externalize their own mental trees of assimilated concepts seamlessly. However, the evaluation process of concept maps includes a strong degree of subjectiveness, which should be mitigated. In this paper we propose partitioning the concept map evaluation process according to the steps followed for creating them, along with objective metrics to assign a score to each of these steps. We propose a formula that combines the partial scores to obtain the final score. Afterward we validate the evaluation technique showing that the score variability associated with the evaluator is significantly reduced, while maintaining similar values for the score in terms of mean and standard deviation.","PeriodicalId":220847,"journal":{"name":"2009 EAEEIE Annual Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126456350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
