Additionally, the current study examined the way in which individual factors mediated the effects of family functioning on mental health problems in Latino youth. Eighty Latino parent-adolescent dyads participated in the current study, including 66 mothers and 14 fathers, as well as 42 female early adolescents and 38 male early adolescents. Parents and youth completed questionnaires assessing the incidence of mental health problems in youth, and adolescents completed additional questionnaires assessing acculturation, family functioning, familism, and global self-worth. Results indicated that adolescent acculturation was not significantly related to mental health outcomes in youth. However, adolescents’ reports of increased family functioning predicted decreased externalizing problems in youth, as well as increased levels of familism and global self-worth in youth. Increased levels of familism predicted decreased externalizing problems in youth, and increased levels of global self-worth predicted decreased internalizing and externalizing problems in youth. Mediation results indicated that individual factors mediated the effects of family functioning on externalizing problems in youth. These results highlight the associations between family functioning, familism, global self-worth and the incidence of mental health problems and provide valuable information on the way in which individual variables mediate the effects of family functioning on mental health problems in Latino early adolescents. El estudio actual examinó el impacto del funcionamiento familiar (es decir, la cohesión balanceada y la flexibilidad balanceada) y los factores individuales (es decir, familismo y la autoestima global) en la incidencia de los problemas de la salud mental en una muestra de los adolescentes jóvenes Latinos. Adicionalmente, el estudio actual examinó la manera en que los factores individuales mediaron los efectos del funcionamiento familiar en los problemas de la salud mental en los adolescentes jóvenes Latinos. Ochenta díadas Latinas de padres y adolescentes jóvenes participaron en el estudio actual. Los participantes incluyeron 66 madres y 14 padres, en adición a 42 niñas adolescentes jóvenes y 38 niños adolescentes jóvenes. Los padres y los adolescentes jóvenes completaron cuestionarios sobre la incidencia de los problemas de la salud mental en los jóvenes, y los adolescentes jóvenes completaron cuestionarios adicionales sobre la aculturación, el funcionamiento familiar, familismo, y la autoestima global. We examined levels of depressive symptoms and depression caseness (i.e., clinically significant levels of depressive symptoms) and psychosocial correlates among foreign-born Latinas living in a new immigrant destination. One hundred fourteen Latinas participated: 93% Mexican-born (Mage = 37.3 years, SD = 5.7, age range = 25–53 years). Most of the women (86%) had been in the United States 10 years or longer but did not have legal documents (80.7%). Depressive symptoms were measured with a short version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Depression caseness was defined as a score of 10 or higher on the short CES-D. Age, education, family income, time living in the United States, family cohesion, social support, undocumented status, and undocumented stress were examined as correlates of depressive symptoms and depression caseness. The mean level of depressive symptoms was 5.5, and 17.5% of participants met the criteria for depression caseness. Regression analysis showed that both lower family cohesion and lower social support were associated with greater depressive symptoms but that only lower social support was associated with depression caseness. Undocumented women experienced higher levels of undocumented stress than did documented women; however, they neither reported more depressive symptoms nor were they more likely to meet the criterion for depression caseness. Helping foreign-born Latinas strengthen their family cohesion and social support, as well as fostering support services for immigrant women and their families, could contribute to fewer depressive symptoms and better mental health among this vulnerable population. Pocos estudios han examinado la salud mental de Latinas nacidas en el extranjero viviendo en nuevos destinos para inmigrantes. Nosotros examinamos los niveles de síntomas depresivos en general y casos de depresión clínica así como ciertas variables psicosocialesen un grupo de Latinas extranjeras viviendo en un nuevo destino para inmigrantes. Las participantes fueron 114 Latinas; 93% nacidas en México; edad promedio 37.3 años, desviación estándar 5.7; rango de edad 25–53 años. Síntomas depresivos se midieron con una versión corta de la escala CES-D. Síntomas clínicos fueron definidos como un puntaje de 10 o más en dicha escala. Las variables psicosociales examinadas fueron edad, educación, ingreso familiar, número de años viviendo en los Estados Unidos, cohesión familiar, apoyo social, estatus migratorio y estrés asociado con el estatus migratorio. El promedio de síntomas depresivos fue 5.5 y 17.5% de las participantes clasificaron en el nivel de síntomas clínicos. Using qualitative data collected from open-ended responses, 141 Mexican American college students (Ages 18–22; 81.6% female; 84.2% U.S.-born) reported on their perceptions of the definition of youth success and ideas about what contributes to youth success. We conducted inductive thematic analysis and found that Mexican American college students identified definitions of success related to 3 themes: academic (e.g., school success), individual (e.g., personal qualities), and social (e.g., positive family relationships) factors. Further, factors relating to the individual (e.g., school involvement), relationships (e.g., supportive family), and the environment (e.g., resource availability) emerged as important contributors to youth success. Academic success, youths’ personal qualities, and positive and supportive family relationships and friendships were of particular importance to Mexican American college students’ perspectives on definitions of youth success and contributors to youth success. Debido a la reciente agenda de investigación enfocada en el desarrollo positivo de la juventud (DPJ), es importante considerar el DPJ desde la perspectiva de los jóvenes. Utilizando datos cualitativos recabados mediante las respuestas de preguntas abiertas de 141 estudiantes universitarios México-Americanos (de 18–22 años de edad; 81.6% mujeres; 84.2% nacidos en Estados Unidos), investigamos las percepciones de estudiantes universitarios sobre la definición del éxito juvenil y sobre sus ideas acerca de lo que contribuye al éxito juvenil. Utilizando un análisis temático inductivo, encontramos que los estudiantes universitarios México-Americanos identificaron definiciones de éxito relacionadas a tres temas: a factores académicos (por ejemplo, éxito escolar), individuales (por ejemplo, cualidades personales) y sociales (por ejemplo, relaciones familiares positivas). Además, hubieron factores relacionados con el individuo (por ejemplo, participación en la escuela), con sus familiares y amigos (por ejemplo, recibir apoyo de la familia), y con el ambiente (por ejemplo, disponibilidad de recursos) que surgieron como contribuyentes importantes al éxito juvenil. El éxito académico, las cualidades personales de los jóvenes, y las relaciones positivas con familiares y amigos fueron de mayor importancia en las perspectivas de los estudiantes universitarios México-Americanos sobre sus definiciones del éxito juvenil y sobre los contribuyentes al éxito juvenil.","PeriodicalId":94085,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latina/o psychology","volume":"1 1","pages":"88–102"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86619208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the relation between bicultural stress and hopelessness or depressive symptoms may vary among Mexican descent adolescents. In particular, ethnic identity status, based on ethnic exploration and ethnic resolution, may protect or increase vulnerability to bicultural stressors. Participants included 522 Mexican descent adolescents (53.1% female; age range 14 to 18 years: M = 16.22 years, SD = 1.09 years) who completed a self-report survey at a school on the U.S./Mexico border with 97% Latina/o concentration. Three ethnic identity statuses (diffused, foreclosed, and achieved) were identified in this sample using cluster analysis based on ethnic identity exploration and resolution. A multiple group path analysis found that more hopelessness was significantly associated with more bicultural stress among diffused and achieved youth. Depressive symptoms were associated with bicultural stress only for achieved youth. Diffused ethnic identity youth reported the highest rates of hopelessness, and they reported more hopelessness when they reported higher rates of bicultural stress. Contrary to hypotheses, achieved ethnic identity status youth reported a significant association between bicultural stress and both hopelessness and depressive symptoms. Our results suggest that achieved ethnic identity may not necessarily be an unmitigated protective factor, particularly when considering intragroup marginalization in areas of high Latina/o concentration. Síntomas de depresión en adolecentes latino/as están asociados con estrés bicultural, tal como discriminación de otros grupos sociales, marginación entre sus propio grupo étnico, hablando solo un idioma en situaciones bilingües, y conflictos culturales entre familia. Sin embargo, la relación entre estrés bicultural y desesperación o síntomas depresivos puede variar en adolecentes de descendencia Mexicana. En particular, estatus de identidad étnico, basado en exploración étnica y resolución étnica, puede proteger contra o aumentar la vulnerabilidad al estresor bicultural. Participantes incluido son 522 adolescentes de descendencia Mexicana (53.1% féminas; las edades de participantes están entre 14 y 18: M = 16.22 años, SD = 1.09 años) quienes completaron una encuesta autoinforme en sus escuelas cerca de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México donde hay un concentración de 97% de estudiantes Latino/as. Identificaron tres estatus de identidad étnico (difusión de identidad, identidad hipotecada, logro de identidad) en esta prueba usando análisis de conglomerados basado en exploración étnica y resolución étnica. Un análisis de grupos múltiples indicó que la asociación entre la desesperación e estrés bicultural era estadísticamente significante para adolescentes en los estatus de dif","PeriodicalId":94085,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latina/o psychology","volume":"33 1","pages":"49–63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79088858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, our goal was to examine how parent–adolescent acculturation differences were related to mental health in Latino adolescents and their parents and to understand the role of acculturation conflict and family functioning within Latino families. Participants included 84 adolescent–parent dyads recruited through bilingual middle schools. We found partial support for our hypothesis that family functioning mediates the relationship between acculturation differences and mental health outcomes for Latino parents. Additionally, we found partial support for our moderated mediation hypothesis; specifically, a significant conditional indirect effect was found for Latino cognitive acculturation differences on adolescent externalizing problems via family functioning at high levels of acculturation conflict. Exploratory analyses also indicated that acculturation conflict moderates the relationship between family functioning and externalizing problems for Latino adolescents. Results highlight the importance of understanding acculturation within the context of Latino families, as findings differed for adolescents and their parents. Additionally, findings suggest that differences in acculturation may not always be problematic and their impact likely depends on how families interpret such differences. Para ayudar a abordar las disparidades de salud mental que existen para las familias latinas en los EE.UU., el presente estudio trató de examinar la relación entre aculturación y salud mental dentro del contexto de la familia latina e identificar posibles mecanismos de intervención para aliviar los problemas de salud mental en esta población. Específicamente, nuestro objetivo fue examinar cómo las diferencias de aculturación entre padres y adolescentes están relacionadas con la salud mental en los adolescentes latinos y sus padres y entender el papel que tiene el conflicto sobre aculturación y el funcionamiento familiar dentro de la familia latina. Los participantes incluyeron 84 pares de adolescentes y sus padres reclutados a través de las escuelas secundarias bilingües. Encontramos un apoyo parcial para nuestra hipótesis de que el funcionamiento de la familia media la relación entre las diferencias de aculturación y la salud mental de los padres latinos. Además, se encontró un apoyo parcial a la hipótesis de la mediación moderada; en concreto, se encontró un efecto indirecto condicional significativo en diferencias de aculturación (latinas cognitivas) para problemas de externalización en adolescentes a través del funcionamiento de la familia a altos niveles de conflicto de aculturación. The current study examined the latent cultural profiles that emerged from the intrapersonal (i.e., ethnic identity and generational status), interpersonal (i.e., language use), and familial (i.e., familial ethnic socialization) domains among 338 Mexican-origin girls in 7th (n = 170; Mage = 12.27, SD = .28; 63.6% U.S.-born) and 10th grades (n = 168; Mage = 15.21, SD = .46; 60.6% U.S.-born). Further, we examined how these profiles were associated with self-esteem, depressive symptoms, and discrimination. Four cultural profiles emerged from a latent profile analysis (i.e., strong-positive, strong-negative, Spanish-dominant low, and English-dominant low). Results indicated that the strong-positive profile (i.e., high on ethnic identity and familial ethnic socialization, bilingual, second generation) was most adaptive, in that this group had the highest self-esteem. Profiles did not differ in perceived discrimination or depressive symptoms. Results highlight the multifaceted nature of cultural profiles and suggest that affiliation with heritage culture across intrapersonal, interpersonal, and familial domains is beneficial for the psychosocial adjustment of Mexican-origin girls. Implications of the use of a multidomain conceptualization of cultural processes in research and positive youth adjustment programs are discussed. Gran parte de las investigaciones sobre procesos culturales han utilizado medidas y enfoques unidimensionales para la orientación cultural, aculturación, e identidad étnica). El presente estudio examinó perfiles culturales que surgieron a partir de las dimensiones intrapersonal (i.e., identidad étnica y estatus generacional en los Estados Unidos [EE.UU]), interpersonal (i.e., uso del idioma), y familiar (i.e., socialización étnica familiar) con 338 niñas de origen mexicano en los grados 7° (n = 170; Medad = 12.27, SD = .28; 63.6% nacidas en EE.UU.) y 10° (n = 168; Medad = 15.21, SD = .46; 60.6% nacidas en EE.UU.). Además, examinamos cómo estos perfiles estaban asociados con autoestima, síntomas depresivos, y discriminación. Cuatro perfiles culturales surgieron usando Latent Profile Analysis (i.e., fuerte-positivo, fuerte-negativo, bajo, con preferencia al español, bajo, con preferencia al inglés). Los resultados indicaron que el perfil muy positivo (i.e., alta identidad étnica y socialización étnica familiar, bilingüe, y segunda generación) fue el mejor adaptado ya que este grupo tuvo el nivel más alto de autoestima. No hubo diferencia entre los perfiles en discriminación y síntomas depresivos. Los resultados resaltan el origen multifacético de los perfiles culturales y sugieren que la afiliación hacia el patrimonio cultural de origen familiar sobre las áreas intrapersonales, interpersonales, y familiares es beneficiosa para adaptación psicológica de la niñas de origen mexicano. This study focused on Curandera/os who have worked with Mexican and Mexican American communities in California. The aim of this study was to elucidate the philosophical framework and the practices of Curanderismo from the perspectives of Curandera/os themselves, in order to educate mainstream mental health professionals and aid them in becoming more culturally attuned to the underserved population of immigrant Latina/os from Mexico and Central America. A qualitative, phenomenological approach was used to analyze interviews with 8 Curandera/os. The results present a theoretical framework of health and illness in Curanderismo focused on themes of spirit, connection, balance, and mind-body; an additional theme illustrated perspectives on how clients improve, including faith in the practice, a strong relationship with the client, believing in the energy from the healer, uncovering remedies from early childhood, and connecting the client with the healing elements (e.g., medicinal plants). Eight major tenets are presented to explain the principles Curandera/os use to guide their practice. Finally, specific treatments were identified, including that of susto, a condition described as a damaged, frightened, spirit. A common sentiment among the Curandera/os was the experience of feeling marginalized and silenced by mainstream professionals. Thus, mental health providers are urged to understand the importance that traditional healers place on religion and spirituality and the significance of tending to the spirit for the many immigrant Latina/o clients. Curanderas/os son aquéllos que curan a las personas a través de su conocimiento especializado en hierbas, masajes, ajuste de huesos, consejería, espiritualidad, y partería. Este estudio se concentró en Curanderos/as que han trabajado con comunidades mexicanas y mexicano-estadounidenses en California. El objetivo de este estudio fue elucidar el marco filosófico y las prácticas del Curanderismo desde las perspectivas de las/os Curandera/os mismos, para educar a los profesionales de la corriente dominante de salud mental y asistirles en sintonizar con la cultura de la población subatendida de latinos inmigrantes de México y Centroamérica. Un enfoque cualitativo y fenomenológico fue utilizado para analizar entrevistas con ocho Curanderas/os. Los resultados presentan un marco teórico de salud y enfermedad propio del Curanderismo, concentrado en temas de espíritu, conexión, balance, y la relación cuerpo-mente. Un tema adicional ilustró perspectivas relativas a cómo se mejoran los clientes, incluyendo la fé en la práctica, una relación sólida con el cliente, la creencia en la energía proveniente del Curandero/a, el descubrimiento de remedios de la infancia temprana, y el conectar al cliente con elementos curativos (por ejemplo, las plantas medicinales). This study examined the interplay of Latino cultural orientation and perceived support from romantic partners in protecting the adjustment of young, low-income, Puerto Rican mothers (N = 103; M age = 18.0 years; SD = 1.2) during the second year postpartum. In multivariate analyses, perceived partner support was uniquely and negatively associated with both maternal depressive symptoms and parenting stress. However, in the case of parenting stress, this association was moderated by mothers’ Latino cultural orientation. Perceived partner support was related to less parenting stress when mothers endorsed a relatively strong Latino cultural orientation; perceived partner support was no longer protective at low levels of Latino orientation. The implications for intervention and for the understanding of the role of culture in social support processes within close relationships are discussed. Madres adolescentes enfrentan una multitud de factores estresantes y tienen un riesgo elevado de presentar síntomas de depresión y de estrés parental. Este estudio examinó la interacción entre la orientación hacia la cultura Latina y el apoyo social percibido en la relación de pareja y su influencia en la adaptación de madres jóvenes de bajo recursos, de origen Puerto Riqueño (N = 103; Edad media = 18.0 años, SD = 1.2) durante el segundo año post natal. En un análisis multivariado, el apoyo social de pareja se asoció significativamente con los síntomas depresivos y el estrés parental reportado por las madres. Sin embargo, y en acuerdo con lo esperado, en el caso del estrés parental, esta asociación fue moderada por el nivel de orientación cultural Latina de las madres. El apoyo social que las madres perciben de sus parejas se asoció con un nivel más bajo de estrés parental cuando las madres endosan un nivel relativamente alto de orientación hacia la cultura Latina; el apoyo de pareja no demostró un efecto protector cuando las madres endorsan un nivel bajo de orientación hacia la cultura Latina. Se discuten las implicaciones para la intervención y para la comprensión del rol de la cultura en los procesos de apoyo social dentro de las relaciones de pareja.","PeriodicalId":94085,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latina/o psychology","volume":"56 1","pages":"45–60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83114995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using Structural Equation Modeling, we examined a model where academic self-efficacy and motivation mediated relations between family, peer, and school support, school belonging, and home-school dissonance to the outcome of academic intentions. We also explored whether relations would differ by gender. Academic motivation functioned as a significant mediator of the effect of family support on academic intentions, and school belonging on academic intentions The relationship between friend support and motivation to achieve varied by gender where the relationship was positive for boys but not for girls. We discuss practical implications for school-based preventive interventions to promote school persistence in Latina/o adolescents. Este estudio examinó las relaciones entre la autoeficacia académica, la motivación académica, el apoyo social, la afiliación escolar, la disonancia hogar-escuela y las intenciones académicas en una muestra de 762 estudiantes Mexicanos Americanos de noveno grado quienes asisten a una escuela pública del medio oeste. Usando Structural Equation Modeling, examinémos un modelo donde autoeficacia académica y motivación funcionaron como mediadores de la relación entre el apoyo familiar, el apoyo social, el apoyo escolar, la afiliación escolar, la disonancia hogar-escuela y el resultado intenciones académicas. También, explorémos si habrian differencias entre hombres y mujeres en éste modélo de relaciónes. La motivación académica funciono como mediador significativo de la relación entre el resultado de las intenciones académicas y el apoyo familiar y la afiliación escolar. La relación entre el apoyo de una amistad y la motivación para alcanzar logros variaron según el género, las relaciónes eran positivas para los hombres pero no eran significada para las mujeres. Discutimos sobre las implicaciones prácticas para las intervenciones preventivas en las escuelas destinadas a promover la persistencia escolar en las/os adolescentes Latinas/os.","PeriodicalId":94085,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latina/o psychology","volume":"126 1","pages":"34–48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87843345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
