Whaling
Short, reliable, and valid depression measures are needed for both social scientists and as screening tools in therapeutic practice. Using self-report data, 2 cross-sectional studies were conducted to find evidence to support the validity of the PHQ-8 for Latina/o university students. Study 1 used a psychology subject pool to recruit 257 Latina/o college students (23% men, 77% women; mean age = 19.5). Study 2 examined Latina/o women and men separately. The participants came from a subject pool and upper-division general education classes to recruit 859 Latina/os (33% men, 67% women; mean age = 19.7). In Studies 1 and 2, confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) indicated that both a 1-factor solution and 2-factor solution fit the data; however, the 2 factors were highly correlated, so a single factor was recommended. In Study 1, the PHQ-8 had good convergent validity with the Center for Epidemiologic Study’s Inventory for depressed mood (Kohout, Berkman, Evans, & Cornoni-Huntley, 1993). In Study 2, the PHQ-8 was invariant (i.e., configural, metric, scalar) between women and men. In both studies, the PHQ-8 was negatively related to quality of life and positively related to anxiety, parental psychological control, and rumination. In Study 2, the PHQ-8 was also positively related to family cohesion. Hence, it was determined the PHQ-8 had adequate psychometric properties with male and female Latina/o university students. Thus, the PHQ-8 is recommended as a brief measure that can be easily implemented by social scientists, medical professionals, or clinicians as a nonfatiguing assessment tool for measuring depressive symptoms.

Social support networks can buffer the impact of trauma on mental health. This study characterizes the social networks of trauma-exposed Latina immigrants using a social network analysis perspective.\u0000\u0000\u0000METHODS\u0000In 2011-2012 a convenience sample (n=28) of Latina immigrants with trauma exposure and presumptive depression or posttraumatic stress disorder was recruited from a community clinic in Washington DC. Participants completed a social network assessment and listed up to ten persons in their network (alters). E-Net was used to describe the aggregate structural, interactional, and functional characteristics of networks and Node-XL was used in a case study to diagram one network.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000Most participants listed children (93%), siblings (82%), and friends (71%) as alters, and most alters lived in the US (69%). Perceived emotional support and positive social interaction were higher compared to tangible, language, information, and financial support. A case study illustrates the use of network visualizations to assess the strengths and weaknesses of social networks.\u0000\u0000\u0000CONCLUSIONS\u0000Targeted social network interventions to enhance supportive networks among trauma-exposed Latina immigrants are warranted.

Given the vulnerability of Hispanics to negative cognitions and emotions, it is important to examine sociocultural correlates of emotional distress. Therefore, we examined associations of machismo and marianismo with negative cognitive-emotional factors (i.e., depression symptoms; cynical hostility; and trait anxiety and anger) in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Sociocultural Ancillary Study, a cross-sectional cohort study of sociocultural and psychosocial correlates of cardiometabolic health. Participants were aged 18-74 years and self-identified as Hispanic of Central American, Cuban, Dominican, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South American, and other Hispanic background (N = 4,426). Results revealed that specific components of machismo (traditional machismo) and marianismo (family and spiritual pillar dimensions) were associated with higher levels of negative cognitions and emotions after adjusting for socio-demographic factors (p < .05); these associations remained consistent across sex, Hispanic background group, and acculturation. Findings can inform mental health interventions and contribute to our understanding of the importance of gender role socialization in the context of self-reported negative cognitive-emotional factors in Hispanics.
