Consequently, autobiographical life narratives of Latino/a psychologists may give Latino psychologists, psychology students, and early career professionals access to effective role modeling (Livo & Rietz, 1986) and guidance (Comas-Diaz, 1994). This study examined the published life narratives (n = 20) of 18 self-identified Latino/a psychologists published between 1999 and 2014. Using thematic analysis, 5 themes were identified: personal and professional development, cultural identities, collective identity, intercultural shifting and transformation of values. These themes are explored in detail, including subthemes and exemplar quotations. Researchers explored how the focus on challenges and barriers within the life narratives may impact readers. Additionally, researchers discussed the influence storytelling and autobiographical life narratives may have on future generations of Latino/a psychologists. La falta de acceso a modelos de facultad latinos/as es una preocupación significativa dentro de la psicología (Padilla, Treviño, Treviño, & González, 1997). Por consecuencia, las narrativas autobiográficas de psicólogas/os Latino/a pueden dar acceso a psicólogos latinos, estudiantes de psicología y nuevos profesionales a un modelo efectivo (Livo & Rietz, 1986) y orientación (Comas-Díaz, 1994). Este estudio examinó los relatos de vida publicadas (n = 20) de 18 psicólogos/as auto-identificados/as cómo latinos/as, publicados entre 1999–2014. Utilizando el análisis temático, se identificaron cinco temas: Desarrollo Personal y Profesional, Identidades Culturales, Identidad Colectiva, Movimiento Intercultural y Transformación de Valores. Estos temas se analizan en detalle, incluyendo subtemas y citas ejemplares. Los investigadores exploraron cómo el enfoque en los desafíos y las barreras dentro de las narrativas de vida puede afectar a los lectores. Además, los investigadores discutieron la influencia que las historias y las narrativas autobiográficas de vida pueden tener sobre las futuras generaciones de psicólogos/as latinos/as.","PeriodicalId":94085,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latina/o psychology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79049573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We incorporated database searches and reviews of relevant publication reference lists and tables of contents of journals that typically publish research on Latina/o samples. We used several search terms, such as gender role, sex role, Hispanic, Latino, machismo, and marianismo, and the following inclusion criteria: (a) published between 1982 and 2013; (b) published or translated into English; (c) empirically based; (d) psychology-focused research questions; and (e) involving a majority of Latina/o participants. Studies that met these criteria (n = 56) were categorized into 1 of the following content areas: gender role attitudes, beliefs, and identity (n = 14); personality functioning (11); education, career, and work (9); interpersonal relationships (9); acculturation (8); and instrument development (5). We also analyzed the types of methods researchers used, which included qualitative methods, quantitative methods involving either the use of common instruments (e.g., Bem Scale, Attitudes Toward Women), or culturally based instruments (e.g., Machismo Measure, Marianismo Beliefs Scale), and mixed methods, involving both qualitative and quantitative methods. Findings also included descriptions of sample characteristics (i.e., gender, age, race, ethnicity, sample size). Implications for future research are discussed relative to the impact of gender role conceptualizations on findings, such as cultural (e.g., machismo, marianismo) or egalitarian perspectives and the need to develop more rigorous, culturally based gender role measures. Para explorar el rol de genero entre Latinas/os en la literatura psicológico, nosotros conducimos un análisis de estudios empíricos basado en roles de género. Latina/o adolescents (N = 128) completed surveys that assessed Latina/o cultural values (familismo, traditional gender roles), acculturation, mother–adolescent discussions about sexual topics, and condom use attitudes and intentions. In regression analyses, we found that traditional gender roles predicted condom use attitudes and intentions, and familismo predicted condom use attitudes. Traditional gender roles also moderated the relation between mother–adolescent discussions about sexual topics and condom use attitudes. These findings suggest that adolescent sexual health prevention programs may have a different impact on Latina/o adolescents’ sexual health, depending on family and cultural factors. El estudio examino si valores culturales (el familismo y el papel tradicional del género), modera la relación entre la comunicación sobre el sexo entre madres y adolescentes, y la actitud y intenciones que los adolescentes tienen sobre el uso del condón. Ciento veintiocho adolescentes Latinas/os completaron una encuesta sobre los valores culturales Latinos, la acculturacion, y la discussion entre la madre y adolescente sobre el sexo. Resultados demuestran que el papel tradicional del género predice la actitud sobre el uso del condón y la intención de usar el condón. El familismo predice solamente la actitud sobre el uso del condón. Finalmente, el papel tradicional del género modera la relación entre el número de tópicos de sexo que discuten las madres con sus adolescentes, y la actitud sobre el uso del condón que tiene los adolescentes. Because of this, it is important to identify factors that may contribute to obesity among Latina/o youth. We explored the relationships among internal health locus of control (IHLOC), cultural factors (cultural orientation, ethnic identity), and Latina/o adolescents’ body mass index (BMI; an index of obesity and overweight). One hundred twenty-eight Latina/o adolescents (ages 13–18 years) completed a series of questionnaires to assess ethnic identity (i.e., affirmation-belonging and participation), cultural orientation (i.e., Latina/o cultural orientation and Anglo cultural orientation), and IHLOC. We also obtained participants’ reports of weight and height, which were used to calculate BMI. Results indicated that there was an inverse association between IHLOC and BMI; specifically, the greater internal control the adolescents perceived they had over their health, the lower their BMI. As expected, Latina/o cultural orientation moderated this relation, such that at moderate and high levels of Latina/o cultural orientation, IHLOC was associated with lower BMI. Contrary to expectations, ethnic identity affirmation-belonging moderated this relation in the opposite direction, such that at low and moderate levels of ethnic identity affirmation-belonging, IHLOC was associated with lower BMI. The importance of IHLOC, cultural factors, and context in obesity among Latina/o youth and the implications of these results for obesity intervention programming are discussed. Comparado a sus compañeros, jóvenes Latina/os tienen alto riesgo de estar sobrepeso y obeso y teniendo experiencias relacionadas con problemas de salud. Sigue siendo importante identificar factores que posiblemente contribuyen con la obesidad entre los jóvenes Latina/os. Nosotros exploramos la relaciones entre el locus del control interna de salud (IHLOC), factores culturales (aculturación, identidad étnica), y el índice de masa corporal (IMC: índices entre la obesidad y el sobrepeso) entre los adolescentes Latina/os. 128 adolescentes Latina/os (13–18 años) completaron una serie de cuestionarios para evaluar la identidad étnica (afirmación-que pertenezca y participación), orientación cultural (orientación cultural Latina/o y orientación cultural Anglo), y el IHLOC. Nosotros también obtuvimos reportes de peso y estatura de los participantes, que usamos para calcular el IMC. Resultados indican que hubo una asociación inversa entre el IHLOC y el IMC. Específicamente, adolescentes que tenían más control interna sobre la percepción que tenían sobre su salud, sus IMC eran más bajas. Como era de esperarse, la orientación cultural Latina/o moderaba esta relación, tal cual que niveles moderados y altas de orientación cultural Latina/o, IHLOC estaba asociado con IMC bajos. Additionally, the current study examined the way in which individual factors mediated the effects of family functioning on mental health problems in Latino youth. Eighty Latino parent-adolescent dyads participated in the current study, including 66 mothers and 14 fathers, as well as 42 female early adolescents and 38 male early adolescents. Parents and youth completed questionnaires assessing the incidence of mental health problems in youth, and adolescents completed additional questionnaires assessing acculturation, family functioning, familism, and global self-worth. Results indicated that adolescent acculturation was not significantly related to mental health outcomes in youth. However, adolescents’ reports of increased family functioning predicted decreased externalizing problems in youth, as well as increased levels of familism and global self-worth in youth. Increased levels of familism predicted decreased externalizing problems in youth, and increased levels of global self-worth predicted decreased internalizing and externalizing problems in youth. Mediation results indicated that individual factors mediated the effects of family functioning on externalizing problems in youth. These results highlight the associations between family functioning, familism, global self-worth and the incidence of mental health problems and provide valuable information on the way in which individual variables mediate the effects of family functioning on mental health problems in Latino early adolescents. The present study uses longitudinal structural equation modeling techniques to identify how parents' socioeconomic status (SES) and youth's length of U.S. residence are associated with adolescent academic outcomes and, in turn, educational attainment in adulthood. The sample included 1,207 Mexican- and Central American-origin youth participants in the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS). Youth completed surveys at times corresponding roughly to ages 13 to 15 (Time 1), 16 to 18 (Time 2), and 23 to 25 (Time 3). When compared with youth with a longer duration of U.S. residence, young people who had lived in the U.S. for less than 5 years at Time 1 reported higher educational attainment at Time 3 by way of a better grade-point average (GPA) and higher educational expectations at Time 1. Parent SES was associated directly and indirectly with higher educational attainment through youth's greater educational expectations at Times 1 and 2. We examined levels of depressive symptoms and depression caseness (i.e., clinically significant levels of depressive symptoms) and psychosocial correlates among foreign-born Latinas living in a new immigrant destination. One hundred fourteen Latinas participated: 93% Mexican-born (Mage = 37.3 years, SD = 5.7, age range = 25–53 years). Most of the women (86%) had been in the United States 10 years or longer but did not have legal documents (80.7%). Depressive symptoms were measured with a short version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Depression caseness was defined as a score of 10 or higher on the short CES-D. Age, education, family income, time living in the United States, family cohesion, social support, undocumented status, and undocumented stress were examined as correlates of depressive symptoms and depression caseness. The mean level of depressive symptoms was 5.5, and 17.5% of participants met the criteria for depression caseness. Regression analysis showed that both lower family cohesion and lower social support were associated with greater depressive symptoms but that only lower social support was associated with depression caseness. Undocumented women experienced higher levels of undocumented stress than did documented women; however, they neither reported more depressive symptoms nor were they more likely to meet the criterion for depression caseness. Helping foreign-born Latinas strengthen their family cohesion and social support, as well as fostering support services for immigrant women and their families, could contribute to fewer depressive symptoms and better mental health among this vulnerable population. Using qualitative data collected from open-ended responses, 141 Mexican American college students (Ages 18–22; 81.6% female; 84.2% U.S.-born) reported on their perceptions of the definition of youth success and ideas about what contributes to youth success. We conducted inductive thematic analysis and found that Mexican American college students identified definitions of success related to 3 themes: academic (e.g., school success), individual (e.g., personal qualities), and social (e.g., positive family relationships) factors. Further, factors relating to the individual (e.g., school involvement), relationships (e.g., supportive family), and the environment (e.g., resource availability) emerged as important contributors to youth success. Academic success, youths’ personal qualities, and positive and supportive family relationships and friendships were of particular importance to Mexican American college students’ perspectives on definitions of youth success and contributors to youth success. Debido a la reciente agenda de investigación enfocada en el desarrollo positivo de la juventud (DPJ), es importante considerar el DPJ desde la perspectiva de los jóvenes. Utilizando datos cualitativos recabados mediante las respuestas de preguntas abiertas de 141 estudiantes universitarios México-Americanos (de 18–22 años de edad; 81.6% mujeres; 84.2% nacidos en Estados Unidos), investigamos las percepciones de estudiantes universitarios sobre la definición del éxito juvenil y sobre sus ideas acerca de lo que contribuye al éxito juvenil. Utilizando un análisis temático inductivo, encontramos que los estudiantes universitarios México-Americanos identificaron definiciones de éxito relacionadas a tres temas: a factores académicos (por ejemplo, éxito escolar), individuales (por ejemplo, cualidades personales) y sociales (por ejemplo, relaciones familiares positivas). Además, hubieron factores relacionados con el individuo (por ejemplo, participación en la escuela), con sus familiares y amigos (por ejemplo, recibir apoyo de la familia), y con el ambiente (por ejemplo, disponibilidad de recursos) que surgieron como contribuyentes importantes al éxito juvenil. El éxito académico, las cualidades personales de los jóvenes, y las relaciones positivas con familiares y amigos fueron de mayor importancia en las perspectivas de los estudiantes universitarios México-Americanos sobre sus definiciones del éxito juvenil y sobre los contribuyentes al éxito juvenil.","PeriodicalId":94085,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Latina/o psychology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86619208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the relation between bicultural stress and hopelessness or depressive symptoms may vary among Mexican descent adolescents. In particular, ethnic identity status, based on ethnic exploration and ethnic resolution, may protect or increase vulnerability to bicultural stressors. Participants included 522 Mexican descent adolescents (53.1% female; age range 14 to 18 years: M = 16.22 years, SD = 1.09 years) who completed a self-report survey at a school on the U.S./Mexico border with 97% Latina/o concentration. Three ethnic identity statuses (diffused, foreclosed, and achieved) were identified in this sample using cluster analysis based on ethnic identity exploration and resolution. A multiple group path analysis found that more hopelessness was significantly associated with more bicultural stress among diffused and achieved youth. Depressive symptoms were associated with bicultural stress only for achieved youth. Diffused ethnic identity youth reported the highest rates of hopelessness, and they reported more hopelessness when they reported higher rates of bicultural stress. Contrary to hypotheses, achieved ethnic identity status youth reported a significant association between bicultural stress and both hopelessness and depressive symptoms. Our results suggest that achieved ethnic identity may not necessarily be an unmitigated protective factor, particularly when considering intragroup marginalization in areas of high Latina/o concentration.
