In recent years, there has been increasing attention on examining the mental health outcomes associated with membership in multiple marginalized groups. Unfortunately, intersectionality research examining the unique experiences of Latinx groups remains scarce. The current article reviews theoretical and methodological considerations regarding intersectionality research within Latinx mental health. From a theoretical perspective, intersectionality brings a series of questions regarding the epistemological approaches to studying psychological phenomena. This, in turn, influences the methodological strategies used to examine these processes. The discussion advances the ongoing discourse regarding the benefits and limitations of integrating intersectionality within research that provides further insight into our Latinx communities. {"title":"Introduction to Special Issue on Research Methods and Design Considerations With Latinx Populations","authors":"A. Romero, A. The promising new methods can further our understanding of key factors that research has found to be important in Latinx psychology. In this vein, this special issue highlights how methodological advances can advance research on parenting, relationships, community contexts, intersectional identities, intersectional oppressions, and international contexts. In this issue, we provide examples, insights, and recommendations into qualitative, quantitative, and mixed method approaches. Three empirical examples demonstrate methodology with Latinx populations of children and parents, romantic partners, and adults in community contexts. Three conceptual papers provide guidelines on effective implementation of qualitative methods with Latinx populations, an overview of intersectional approaches to quantitative analyses, and insight into how international collaborations can advance global Latinx psychology. Effective use and application of innovative methods will improve the quality of our research studies and, in turn, enhance the scientific advances we make in Latinx psychology. This finding parallels the paradigmatic shift in the field of psychology (Gergen, Josselson, & Freeman, 2015; Ponterotto & Grieger, 2007) toward a balance between quantitative and qualitative methods of inquiry. In this article, the authors examine the unique promise that qualitative research can play in advancing multicultural psychology (Hall, Yip, & Zárate, 2016) relative to Latinx populations (e.g., Ojeda, Flores, Meza, & Morales, 2011), with the overlay of critical perspectives (Solórzano, & Bernal, 2001) in Latinx Psychology. We focus on the culturally consistent ways that qualitative research may empower Latinx populations and aim to give voice to their stories. We review best practices in qualitative research grounded by integrating Latinx cultural values and offer guidance for researchers considering qualitative research methods with Latinx populations. Within the US, health disparities are evident in Latinx populations. Globally, the health disparities are also evident in Latin America as compared to the US and other economically affluent nations. The diversification of psychology in content and persons has led to a unique opportunity to build bridges that can help reduce disparities inand outside of the US mainland. Collaborations can be of great use in addressing health disparities internationally but also are of critical importance in testing the ecological validity of existing interventions. It is imperative that researchers approach these exchanges as truly collaborative and power even, as researchers in all locations stand to learn and grow from the partnership, otherwise US-based researchers can unwittingly engage intellectual colonization and advance cultural imperialism. US-based researchers must be particularly thoughtful about disparities in both resources and consequences for success and failures in research contexts. However, exactly how to accomplish the engagement while maintaining scientific rigor is a challenge that investigators face. We contribute to the literature by demonstrating the implementation of a crossover design embedded within a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach. The goal of the study was to disseminate priority health education, which aligned with U.S. Preventive Services Task Force screening guidelines, to Latinas 18 to 65 years of age living in Pima County, Arizona. The use of CBPR was to ensure engagement and increase ownership of the study by the Latina community. To this end, the article discusses the integration of CBPR throughout the crossover study to reach the outcomes of increased knowledge in health education related to sexually transmitted infections and depression that promoted informed health care decisions and increased screening. La literatura acentúa la necesidad de atraer Latinos/as a estudios de investigaciones. Sin embargo, el desafío que encuentran los investigadores es de que manera exacta lograr atraerles y aun mantener el rigor científico. Nosotros contribuimos a esta literatura demostrando la implementación de un diseño cruzado estrechamente ligado al enfoque de investigaciones basadas en participación comunitaria (CBPR). However, self-regulation traits, such as effortful control, could protect youth against the negative effects of stressors. Using a resilience framework, we examined the relations of multicultural stressors on depressive and externalizing problems in Latino youth, and tested if effortful control counteracted these relations. We hypothesized that stressors would positively predict depressive and externalizing problems, but that effortful control would compensate against these risks. Latino families with a fifth-grade child (N = 57, mean age = 10.5, 57.9% female, 83% two-parent) living in the Midwest were recruited utilizing community resources. Data were cross-sectionally analyzed using structural equation modeling in Mplus. Stressors were positively associated with depressive and externalizing problems, whereas effortful control had negative direct effects on maladjustment. Results suggest that effortful control may help counteract contextual risks commonly experienced by Latino youth. Findings suggest that, contrary to previous studies, academic outcomes are not related to immigrant generational status. However, students who adopt the integration acculturation strategy are more likely to have a positive school attitude, while students who use the assimilation strategy are more likely to have a negative school attitude. Students who use the integration strategy also score higher on school effort and educational values than students who use the assimilation strategy. High levels of school effort and educational values are related to both a higher grade point average (GPA) and a more positive school attitude. Conversely, low levels of parental involvement are associated with positive academic outcomes. Students who were thinking of dropping out of college scored lower on school attitude, school effort, and educational values than their counterparts. However, there was no difference in the GPA of the two groups of students. Previous studies on this topic have focused almost exclusively on unidimensional acculturation and school-age children or adolescents. Thus, these studies provide insight into the way that bidimensional acculturation affects academic variables such as GPA, school attitude, parental involvement, school effort, educational values, and bilingualism within a Latina/o college sample. The findings from these studies emphasize the importance of focusing on the values and beliefs of both the host and heritage cultures. {"title":"Religiosity and Well-Being Among Mexican-Born and U.S.-Born Mexicans: A Qualitative Investigation","authors":"Oswaldo Moreno, E. Cardemil","doi":"10.1037/lat0000099","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1037/lat0000099","url":null,"abstract":"In this study, 40 Latinas/os of Mexican origin (20 Mexican-born and 20 U.S.-born) from the Southwest United States participated in in-person qualitative interviews centered on two interrelated aims. The first aim was to better understand participants’ perceptions regarding their religiosity, as well as their view of the relationship between religiosity and their well-being. The second aim explored generational influences on participants’ descriptions of religiosity. Using thematic analysis, we found generational differences in how participants described their religiosity. Specifically, Mexican-born immigrants perceived that their religiosity was informed by their social connections, having more life stressors, and traditional upbringing. U.S.-born Mexican Americans, however, perceived themselves as being less interested in social connections and having fewer life stressors relative to than Mexican-born immigrants. These perceptions seemed to contribute to a reduced interest in religion. In addition, participants also viewed religiosity as helping their psychological well-being. This was generally seen with Mexican-born immigrants who described that social support, a religious locus of control, and adherence to religion-specific morals and guidelines were aspects of religiosity commonly connected to their well-being. Clinical and research implications are discussed. En este estudio, 40 latinas/os de origen mexicano (20 nacidos en México y 20 nacidos en los Estados Unidos) del suroeste de los Estados Unidos participaron en una entrevista cualitativa centrado sobre dos metas principales. En particular, se sabe muy poco acerca de los contextos específicos en los que los PBE podrían ser efectivos (o no) con Latino/as. Thomas","doi":"10.1037/lat0000094","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1037/lat0000094","url":null,"abstract":"Patient activation has recently emerged as a critical component of effective health care (Hibbard & Greene, 2013), but Latina/o populations demonstrate lower levels of activation compared to non-Latina/o Whites (Cunningham, Hibbard, & Gibbons, 2011). The current study examined demographic and psychological factors associated with immigrant Latina/o parent activation in parents seeking mental health services for their children. Additionally, the study tested whether psychological factors (parental depressive symptoms, parenting stress, perceived severity of child psychopathology) were associated with the effectiveness of an activation intervention among immigrant Latina/o parents (MEPREPA— short for “me preparo”/I prepare [MEtas, PReguntar, Escuchar, Preguntar para Aclarar/goals, questioning, listening, questioning to clarify]). Results demonstrated that parenting stress and perceived severity of child psychopathology were associated with lower levels of parent activation. Additionally, although there was a treatment effect for all parents, stratified group analyses suggested that parents with higher depressive symptoms and greater parenting stress benefited more from the MEPREPA intervention compared to controls. Stratified analyses also showed that the intervention had a greater positive impact on parent activation in health care among parents whose children had more severe symptoms. Clinical and research implications are discussed.
