As meditation it sings to us in a blue note that worries us, that lingers in the unsettled. It writes Black life as unsettled by the modern world and its maps. But Black life also unsettles the practices of cartography; indeed the maps that we have are political maps that are generated out of colonial desires.RÉSUMÉ:A Map to the Door of No Return de Dionne Brand est une méditation sur le sens de nos conditions. La réflexion se déploie sur un mode mineur qui éveille en nous une inquiétude, qui s’attarde dans l’irrésolu. Yet, to only view Black people’s relationship to sugar through violent histories and presents is to miss a sweetness—belonging, intimacy, connection—that exceeds it. Françoise Vergès seeks to answer this question by looking at refugees trapped in zones of non being, hunted, chased and criminalised. They cross doors that State, its police and army as well as private militia transformed into dangerous and deadly passages. Even if these doors are not places that “made everyone forget their names” as Dionne Brand has written, they echo the initial door of no return. Françoise Vergès cherche à répondre à cette question en s’intéressant aux personnes réfugiées prises au piège dans des zones de non-être, chassées, pourchassées et criminalisées. Même si ces portes ne sont pas des endroits « où tout le monde oublie son nom », comme l’a écrit Dionne Brand, elles font écho à la porte sans retour originale. I stage a collision between notes and dreams, two of A Map to the Door of No Return’s many literary contours, in order to accentuate the author’s powerful critique of the romantic and violent assumptions of belonging. Brand’s deposition, where dreams constitute evidence, is not so much an undoing of historical violence—an impossibility—as it is a psychic undoing, hesitantly redirected back to the text’s unstable “I.” Approaching the enforced collectivity of Canadian nationalism, I close by locating A Map to the Door of No Return in a local context.RÉSUMÉ:Attirant l’attention sur le sous-titre de l’œuvre non romanesque de Dionne Brand parue en 2001, A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging, cet article suit le fil de la comparaison que dresse l’auteure entre diaspora et « mauvais rêves », comparaison arrangée en fragments et façonnée par des logiques transhistoriques de captivité. Je mets en scène une collision entre les notes et les rêves, deux des nombreux contours littéraires de l’œuvre, afin de faire ressortir la critique puissamment formulée par l’auteure des présupposés romantiques et violents de l’appartenance. La déposition de Brand, où les rêves constituent une preuve, n’évoque pas tant une (impossible) défaite de la violence historique qu’une perte psychique, annulation freudienne redirigée avec hésitation vers le « je » instable du texte. Je conclus en situant A Map to the Door of No Return dans le contexte local, dans la perspective de la collectivité imposée typique du nationalisme canadien.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"14 - 30"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84662532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I read Brand’s deployment of the concept-metaphor of “the Door” and its attendant “tear in the world” as indexing the chasm from which Black feeling outside of and against “the World” as relational container irrupts. Brand’s text reveals that rather than offering an escape from meaning-as-capture, when considered from the position of Blackness, feeling is capture, and it is this seemingly paradoxical state of things that renders Black affect aporetic. Feeling-as-capture is antithetical to dominant theorizations which posit that the ontology of affect is escape. By theorizing capture as endemic to Blackness and therefore at the root of Black sensorial experience, Brand locates a rift in the very structure of affect.RÉSUMÉ:Examinant A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging de Dionne Brand, cet article soutient que ce texte théorise le fossé entre le fait d’être Noir·e et le monde, fossé qui naitrait de la question de l’expérience affective. Je lis le déploiement du concept-métaphore de « la porte » et la « déchirure dans le monde » qui l’accompagne comme des indications du gouffre où fait irruption le sentiment noir d’être en dehors « du monde » en tant que conteneur relationnel et contre lui. Le texte de Brand révèle que, lorsqu’il est considéré du point de vue des personnes noires, plutôt que d’offrir une échappatoire au sens en tant que capture, le ressenti est capture ; c’est cet état apparemment paradoxal des choses qui rend l’affect noir aporétique. Par rapport aux théories dominantes, le ressenti en tant que capture est antithétique, car ces théories postulent que l’ontologie de l’affect est l’évasion. En concevant la capture comme une expérience endémique au fait d’être Noir·e, et donc fondamentale à l’expérience sensorielle noire, Brand situe la faille dans la structure même de l’affect.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"5 1","pages":"45 - 55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79146226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By grouping athleticism with other forms of artistry, Brand’s consideration of the sporting body suggests its possibilities in creative and intellectual projects. I use the conceptual tools provided in Map to consider American gymnast Simone Biles’ actions in the 2020 Olympics as one of these sites, moments, and movements of possibility. Reading her experiences historically and metaphorically through the Door of No Return, I suggest that Biles’ refusal to compete to preserve her mental health was a powerful act of resistance and “way-finding” (Map 44).RÉSUMÉ:Cet article réfléchit aux différentes manières dont la conceptualisation du corps noir dans Map to the Door of No Return de Dionne Brand révèlent son potentiel libérateur. By analyzing the Calgary Stampede as a case study of forms of white masculinity that are supported, encouraged, prioritized and, at times, glorified in Alberta, the authors demonstrate how this transient white guy problem is proving exceedingly dangerous to many Indigenous women in particular (as well as to women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people more broadly) and diverse local communities, the land and the environment. Their analysis aims to unpack how settler-colonial logics of extractivism and cultural practices of placemaking, too often viewed as innocuous and as central to an Albertan identity, come to be deeply implicated in ongoing violence against Indigenous women.RÉSUMÉ:En établissant des liens entre l’économie extractive, les formes de la culture cowboy (et la masculinité rude, blanche et ouvrière) depuis longtemps enchevêtrées à l’extractivisme sur le territoire maintenant désigné province de l’Alberta (dans l’ouest du Canada) et les taux élevés de violence coloniale sexualisée contre les femmes autochtones dans la province, nous soutenons que l’Alberta souffre d’un problème « d’homme blanc de passage ». En nous servant du Stampede de Calgary comme d’une étude de cas sur les formes de masculinité blanche qui sont soutenues, encouragées, priorisées et parfois glorifiées en Alberta, nous montrons que ce problème de l’homme blanc de passage s’avère extrêmement dangereux pour de nombreuses femmes autochtones en particulier (ainsi que pour les femmes, les filles et les personnes 2ELGBTQQIA en général), et diverses communautés locales, la terre et l’environnement. Notre analyse vise à comprendre le fonctionnement de la logique de l’extractivisme et des pratiques culturelles de création de lieux du colonialisme de peuplement qui, trop souvent considérées comme inoffensives et essentielles à une certaine identité albertaine, en viennent à jouer un rôle fondamental dans la violence continue faite aux femmes autochtones.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"18 1","pages":"302 - 328"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81034346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Map asks us how we find each other, how the wounds and hauntings that stand between us overdetermine our movement, desire, and flesh, and how we still then find each other. But once we do find each other, how do we find touch? What kind of “way finding” leads us past brutality and into the kind of touch we desire? In this reflection, I try to track touch within Brand’s Map by lingering in the passages where it appears and disappears. I track touch to reflect on my own map, to illuminate an essential aspect of the rupture with which this work is concerned, and to think generatively about how we attend to this intersection of the personal and the political.RÉSUMÉ:Les différents registres de l’œuvre de Dionne Brand A Map to the Door of No Return – partie essai, partie mémoire, partie théorie, partie critique et partie rétrospective littéraire – fonctionnent un peu comme un dispositif d’orientation, un moyen de trouver son chemin, alors même qu’ils remettent en question les fondements épistémologiques de notre compréhension des systèmes et des économies libidinales qui nous entourent, avant que nous y trouvions notre chemin.
