I examine the circumstances and limits of Justin Trudeau’s apology for the gay purge and related initiatives since November 2017. I contend that while the normative affective structure of liberal apology mandates a move from mythical homo sorrow to mythical reparation, jettisoned affects, experiences and activism from below exceed the state’s directive for reparation and forgetting. I name such excesses divine queer sorrow. More specifically, I trace the remaindered and peripheral affect of testimonies and activism to think about not only a queer affective structure of forgiveness but also a transformative future stemming from activist sensibilities.RÉSUMÉ:Cet article porte sur la culture et la politique des excuses pour les injustices commises contre les personnes LGBTQ+ dans les États-nations démocratiques et libéraux de culture anglo-européenne. J’examine les circonstances et les limites des excuses présentées par Justin Trudeau depuis novembre 2017 au sujet de la purge des personnes LGBTQ+ dans la fonction publique et des politiques connexes. Je soutiens que si la structure affective normative des excuses libérales impose le passage du mythique chagrin homo à la mythique réparation, les affects, les expériences et l’activisme rejetés par la base vont au-delà de la directive de l’État concernant la réparation et l’oubli. J’appelle ces excès le « divin chagrin queer ». Sleep (or a lack thereof) indexes scales of and relations to antiblackness. In this paper, I consider the mirrored boundaries between wakefulness/sleep and life/death, probing their psycho-existential and ontological infrastructures. I argue that these states of being are tethered, however tenuously, to each other and in doing so, clarify the stakes of the ostensibly quotidian and mundane. By analyzing insomnia, slumber, fever dreams and nightmares, the text reveals the literal and metaphorical coordinates that locate the bounds of Black consciousness and freedom. Black sleep becomes a kind of freedom, insofar as it offers reprieve that is only possible when the dreamwork is forgotten or psychically registered as nothing at all.RÉSUMÉ:Le livre méditatif et narratif hors norme de Dionne Brand, A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging, montre que l’incroyable difficulté de vivre, de rêver et de dormir est non seulement la preuve d’une condition commune aux personnes noires, mais aussi de l’existence d’un monde raciste envers les personnes noires. Le sommeil (ou son absence) est un indicateur du degré de racisme contre les Noir·es et des relations avec lui. Dans cet article, j’examine les frontières en miroir entre l’éveil et le sommeil et entre la vie et la mort, en sondant leurs infrastructures psychoexistentielles et ontologiques. Je soutiens qu’il existe un lien, aussi ténu soit-il, entre ces états d’être et, ce faisant, je clarifie les enjeux de ce qui est en apparence quotidien et banal. En analysant l’insomnie, le sommeil, les rêves de fièvre et les cauchemars, le texte révèle les coordonnées littérales et métaphoriques qui situent les limites de la conscience et de la liberté des Noir.es. Le sommeil noir devient une sorte de liberté, dans la mesure où il offre un répit qui n’est possible que lorsque le travail du rêve est oublié ou enregistré psychiquement comme rien du tout.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"33 1","pages":"31 - 44"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85728380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Taking a cue from Brian Richardson’s description of the second person as an “unnatural” register of narration, it explores Brand’s use of the second person as a voice of commingled alterity that has strong ethical implications for readers. With Brand’s analysis of “what sits in narrative” in An Autobiography of an Autobiography of Reading (2020) as a hermeneutic, the article demonstrates how, by blurring the gap between narratee and reader, Brand puts the reader “in the room with history.”RÉSUMÉ:Revenant sur A Map to the Door of No Return (2001) de Dionne Brand à la lumière de sa réception savante et des œuvres ultérieures de l’auteure, cet article s’intéresse à la narration comme forme de réparation postcoloniale. Il accorde pour ce faire une attention particulière à l’emploi de la narration à la deuxième personne, comprise comme un dispositif de contre-éloignement. Suivant Brian Richardson, qui considère la deuxième personne comme un registre de narration « peu naturel », l’article considère en effet que l’usage de la deuxième personne donne voix chez Brand à une altérité amalgamée qui a de lourdes conséquences éthiques pour la personne qui lit. En se référant à l’herméneutique déployée par Brand dans son analyse de « ce qui se trouve dans la narration », dans An Autobiography of an Autobiography of Reading (2020), l’article montre que l’auteure, en brouillant le fossé entre narrataire et lecteur ou lectrice, place ceux-ci « dans la pièce avec l’histoire ».","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"151 1","pages":"100 - 84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81322937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dionne Brand’s A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging (2001) draws us towards the uncharted/able expanse of the Door of No Return, and particularly the ways the Door overwhelms temporal senses and experiences. The Door, Brand describes, is a passport from a territory so vast that “[w]e are always in the middle of the journey” (Brand 2001, 49).Map invites us not only to consider the inadequacies of origins and nation-state boundaries. Map also theorizes the inability of normative temporal schemas to render sensible the “past’s” ongoing presence in Black life in the wake(s) of the Door and the Middle Passage of racial slavery. Mirroring Brand’s weaving of personal narrative and theory, this reflection turns to the relationship between forgetting and time, particularly in intergenerational conversations, to understand how the Door disorients normative logics of time as a dimension of Black psychic life that people share in. In doing so, this reflection sits with how Map names a temporality of the Door that is not about fantastical change or transformation, but about continuous arrivals to the experience of a suspension that one never quite leaves.RÉSUMÉ:Prenant au sérieux la conception de Dionne Brand selon laquelle nous « n’éprouvons pas de sentiment immédiat d’appartenance, seulement de dérive » (Brand 2001, p. 118), ce commentaire médite sur la conception de « dérive » formulée par l’auteure, à la fois théorie et méthode de la temporalité noire. A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging (2001) de Brand nous attire vers l’étendue inexplorée ou inexplorable de la « porte sans retour », et en particulier vers le bouleversement des sensations et des expériences temporelles provoqué par la porte. La porte décrite par Brand est un passeport rattaché à un territoire si vaste que « nous sommes toujours au milieu du voyage » (Brand, 2001, p. 49).A Map to the Door of No Return ne nous invite pas seulement à considérer les insuffisances des origines et des frontières des États-nations. L’œuvre théorise également l’incapacité des schémas temporels normatifs à rendre sensible la présence continue du « passé » dans la vie des Noir·e·s, après « la porte » et « le passage intermédiaire » de l’esclavage racial. Empruntant à Brand son entrelacement du récit personnel et de la théorie, ma réflexion se tourne vers la relation entre l’oubli et le temps, en particulier dans les conversations intergénérationnelles, afin de comprendre comment la Porte, en désorientant les logiques normatives du temps, devient une dimension commune de la vie psychique noire. Ce faisant, elle adhère à la manière dont l’œuvre de Brand nomme une temporalité de « la porte » qui réfère non pas à un changement ou à une transformation fan","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"54 1","pages":"195 - 201"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85632715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
