Splinters and Fragments: Looking into a Map, Finding Wonder

Abstract

ABSTRACT:In this reflection, I offer some thoughts on my introduction to Dionne Brand’s Map to the Door of No Return, and invite the reader to consider the text as a guide for an archipelagic reading practice, offering signposts for reading other works of poetry from the Caribbean in particular, and threading these pieces together in a manner that is ‘symphonic.’ In this symphonic arrangement, I offer examples of the texts that MTTDNR taught me to read—including Derek Walcott, Sylvia Wynter, Kamau Brathwaite, and others—and underscore the call and response between MTTDNR and these texts. Ultimately, Brand’s work has allowed my own participation in this call and response due to its role as the connective tissue in my own reading practice.RÉSUMÉ:Je propose ici quelques-unes des réflexions qu’a suscitées chez moi la découverte de l’œuvre de Dionne Brand Map to the Door of No Return. J’invite la lectrice et le lecteur à considérer ce texte comme un guide pour une pratique archipélagique de la lecture. Il offre en effet des balises à la lecture d’autres ouvrages de poésie provenant des Caraïbes, en particulier, et tisse ces œuvres entre elles à la manière d’une symphonie. Dans cet arrangement symphonique, à partir d’exemples de textes que Map to the Door of No Return m’a appris à lire – y compris ceux de Derek Walcott, de Sylvia Wynter, de Kamau Brathwaite et d’autres –, je mets en évidence le mouvement d’appel et de réponse entre l’œuvre de Brand et ceux-ci. En définitive, Map to the Door of No Return a favorisé ma propre participation à ce mouvement, en jouant dans ma pratique de lecture le rôle de tissu conjonctif.
