Feeling-as-Capture

Abstract

ABSTRACT:This paper considers Dionne Brand’s A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging, arguing that the text theorizes the gulf between Blackness and the World as rooted in the question of affective experience. I read Brand’s deployment of the concept-metaphor of “the Door” and its attendant “tear in the world” as indexing the chasm from which Black feeling outside of and against “the World” as relational container irrupts. Brand’s text reveals that rather than offering an escape from meaning-as-capture, when considered from the position of Blackness, feeling is capture, and it is this seemingly paradoxical state of things that renders Black affect aporetic. Feeling-as-capture is antithetical to dominant theorizations which posit that the ontology of affect is escape. By theorizing capture as endemic to Blackness and therefore at the root of Black sensorial experience, Brand locates a rift in the very structure of affect.RÉSUMÉ:Examinant A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging de Dionne Brand, cet article soutient que ce texte théorise le fossé entre le fait d’être Noir·e et le monde, fossé qui naitrait de la question de l’expérience affective. Je lis le déploiement du concept-métaphore de « la porte » et la « déchirure dans le monde » qui l’accompagne comme des indications du gouffre où fait irruption le sentiment noir d’être en dehors « du monde » en tant que conteneur relationnel et contre lui. Le texte de Brand révèle que, lorsqu’il est considéré du point de vue des personnes noires, plutôt que d’offrir une échappatoire au sens en tant que capture, le ressenti est capture ; c’est cet état apparemment paradoxal des choses qui rend l’affect noir aporétique. Par rapport aux théories dominantes, le ressenti en tant que capture est antithétique, car ces théories postulent que l’ontologie de l’affect est l’évasion. En concevant la capture comme une expérience endémique au fait d’être Noir·e, et donc fondamentale à l’expérience sensorielle noire, Brand situe la faille dans la structure même de l’affect.
