Muovendo da qui si propone, per una buona manutenzione del concetto di neorealismo, una rilettura condotta con uno sguardo duttile, aperto a valorizzare la ricca e inquieta pluralità di forme – di immagini di mondo e di soluzioni narrative d’ispirazione realistica – che rispondono alle sollecitazioni del contesto. In questa prospettiva è necessario riconoscere l’incidenza decisiva dei procedimenti di soggettivizzazione e trasfigurazione nei modi ibridi di un realismo che punta a raccontare l’esperienza del reale, un rapporto con gli eventi che non di rado si rivela all’insegna di uno straniamento spaesante, dell’incontro con un ‘mondo impreveduto’.","PeriodicalId":42720,"journal":{"name":"Italianist","volume":"41 1","pages":"348 - 366"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42322521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By 1966, after a decade of intense editorial efforts, only four of the ten planned volumes had been published, and the project was abandoned. Based on extensive archival research carried out at the Mondadori Foundation, this article will demonstrate how the Opera Omnia publishing debacle was caused by several failures, including the publisher’s difficulty in keeping pace with the translation of a writer with such a complex style as Faulkner, and the growing tensions between Mondadori’s managing editors and Pivano, a highly competent and uncompromising editor.","PeriodicalId":42720,"journal":{"name":"Italianist","volume":"41 1","pages":"446 - 464"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48928518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

La mia tesi è che questi esempi possano essere visti come una cartina di tornasole per due distinti indirizzi che la casa ha assunto nel periodo. Da un lato, la ‘Biblioteca di letteratura’ di Giorgio Bassani incarnava una preferenza per la tradizione modernista, testimoniata dalla scelta di alcuni scrittori di lingua inglese rappresentativi di questa tendenza (E. M. Forster, Wyndham Lewis, Ford Madox Ford tra gli altri). Dall’altro, le collane dirette da Valerio Riva (‘Narrativa’, ‘Le Comete’, ‘Narratori’) esprimevano il desiderio di cavalcare l’onda ‘sperimentale’ che stava per cambiare il panorama letterario italiano.","PeriodicalId":42720,"journal":{"name":"Italianist","volume":"41 1","pages":"389 - 405"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42042436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By evaluating the archival evidence surrounding this ‘translation event’, this study reconstructs the transatlantic alliances that the firm tried to forge with American firms between 1959 and 1968 to spread around the translation costs and ensure greater geographical diffusion. Furthermore, it maps the efforts made to secure the best translator for what was judged to be a linguistically challenging foreign title. The study contextualises the translators’ articulations of how best to interpret in English the mixture of dialect and slang characterising Pasolini’s novel. The analysis of the business and aesthetic discourses surrounding this translation event also takes into account Pier Paolo Pasolini’s evolving discourse on dialect and his position in the national and international cultural fields.","PeriodicalId":42720,"journal":{"name":"Italianist","volume":"41 1","pages":"465 - 489"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41364317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on archival documents held at the Fondazione Einaudi in Turin and on theories of translation that assimilate this literary practice to reading (Spivak, Calvino), my contribution aims to demonstrate how both Ginzburg and Motti responded to the same ideal of translation, as practised at the Einaudi publishing house. I also illustrate how a case of traduction manqué in Ginzburg’s career gave rise, on the one hand, to a new creative phase and, on the other, to a symbolic passing of the baton to Motti, a silent and expert translator, who was given the task of inventing an Italian voice for this brilliant writer.","PeriodicalId":42720,"journal":{"name":"Italianist","volume":"41 1","pages":"406 - 423"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48407037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides the first historical account of the cultural agency of the most important readers of Italian fiction working for British publishers with an interest in European literature in the period 1945–1968 (Jonathan Cape, Chatto & Windus, the Hogarth Press and The Bodley Head), assessing their educational and professional background and its influence on their critical perspective. To do this, it analyses three examples of professional reading, which concern the use of categories such as ‘realism’ and ‘neorealism’; the consideration of genre and readability (with a focus on the translation of Natalia Ginzburg’s Lessico famigliare); and the assessment of the political subtext of Vasco Pratolini’s trilogy Una storia italiana.","PeriodicalId":42720,"journal":{"name":"Italianist","volume":"41 1","pages":"367 - 388"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47367163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The eight contributions in this number examine speci fi c aspects of the book trade occurring between these geo-linguistic areas to bring to light both the broad cultural questions in fl uencing and the speci fi c trade protocols utilised for the selection of foreign titles. Our studies also detail the often rich and complex network of relationships and professional resources, encompassing multiple geographies, involved in the translation work fl ow. Embracing the recent archival turn in translation history, the research showcased in this special issue addresses key and emerging questions informing the ongoing scholarly inquiry into comparative and international publishing history, translation history and translator studies, and the material conditions that make literary transfer amongst di ff erent linguistic systems possible. 1 By recuperating hidden, or hitherto ignored, documentation preserved in publishers ’ archives located in Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the contributors to this special issue have been able to illuminate for the fi rst time speci fi c translation events that cast in sharp relief crucial factors in the publication of a foreign title in translation, such as asymmetries of power and prestige in the fi rms ’ hierarchies, gender imbalances a ff ecting professional relationships, and too-often-unful fi lled expectations of fair fi nancial reward. After contextualising Italian cinema’s enduring tendency to employ laughter to cope with tragedy, I cast a spotlight on three of the few Italian film comedies that address the topics of old age and ageing in sustained, purposeful, and original ways. Beginning with an analysis of Fantozzi va in pensione (Neri Parenti, 1988) as a kind of precursor to more recent features, I examine the interconnected themes of work, retirement, intergenerational conflict, and death. Close readings of Metti la nonna in freezer (Giancarlo Fontana and Giuseppe Stasi, 2018) and Buoni a nulla (Gianni Di Gregorio, 2014) follow. These comedies recycle tropes addressed in Fantozzi va in pensione. Yet, when interpreted in the context of contemporary Italy, the latter two films are also innovative in their grotesque depiction of older persons as ‘human capital’.","PeriodicalId":42720,"journal":{"name":"Italianist","volume":"41 1","pages":"284 - 307"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44328369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
