In this context, we present LORE, a location-detection system for tweets that leverages the geographic database GeoNames together with linguistic knowledge through NLP techniques. One of the main contributions of this model is to capture fine-grained complex locative references, ranging from geopolitical entities and natural geographic references to points of interest and traffic ways. LORE outperforms state-of-the-art open-source location-extraction systems (i.e. Stanford NER, spaCy, NLTK and OpenNLP), achieving an unprecedented trade-off between precision and recall. Therefore, our model provides not only a quantitative advantage over other well-known systems in terms of performance but also a qualitative advantage in terms of the diversity and semantic granularity of the locative references extracted from the tweets.

Recent developments in translation and technology, combined with the increasingly prominent role of translation in the global marketplace, have given the discipline a renewed significance both academically and culturally. In Palestine, however, translator training has for many years subsisted on limited resources, despite the fact that translation, in most Palestinian universities English departments, has been a requisite course in English language and literature degrees at undergraduate level for the past four decades. Drawing on first-hand experience from teaching undergraduate translation courses at Al-Quds University and An-Najah National University, what this article attempts to investigate, then, is the status of translation teaching at the undergraduate level at English departments in Palestinian universities. To that effect, the paper uses a selective body of authentic translation examples and outlines some important issues which are indispensable to undergraduate translation teaching. The study offers advice and guidelines to university professors and instructors who do not have degrees and/or training in translation and find themselves obliged to teach undergraduate translation courses at their respective English departments.

Among the most pervasive forms of contemporary tourism discourse we find online reviews posted on social media platforms as TripAdvisor. Previous research on online travel reviews focused almost exclusively on negative reviews and mostly considered monolingual English dataset. In the present study we will explore positive reviews and we will add a cross-linguistic analysis comparing reviews written in English, Italian and Dutch. In this contribution, we first explore the move structure of reviews, and then delve into their different linguistic realizations, paying particular attention to potential cross-linguistic similarities and divergences. Our results show that positive reviews are generally formed by four main moves: positive and negative evaluations, offering extra/background information and future-oriented recommendations. These moves represent stable and recurrent features in reviews written in all three languages under examination. Further, also the topics of the reviews display a cross-linguistic tendency towards similarity, with the preferred topics being the accommodation, its services and the staff. The findings also highlight some divergences among the three language groups, especially not on what is said but on how it is said. For instance, in reviews written in Italian we found expressions of thankfulness and congratulations to the staff, while these are practically absent in the other languages. Moreover, we observed that Italian reviewers tend to realize positive evaluations in a more intensified way (e.g. through the use of superlative lexical expressions) while these strategies are used far less frequently in British and Dutch reviews. With this study we seek to contribute to research in the field of (digital) tourism discourse providing one of the first discourse-oriented analyses on reviews of positive polarity. Moreover, performing a comparative analysis, we aim at gaining a deeper insight on the issue of multilingualism within (online) tourism communication.

EnglishThis research aims at identifying and describing the construct “educational success” of senior preservice English foreign language teachers in the degree of Primary Education at the University of Granada while doing their school practices. In order to fulfil the objective, we have applied, and adapted to our setting, the instrument circle of school life (Lopez & Valls, 2013) on 88 future language teachers. The focus of our study is centred on the connections between the dependent variable (educational success) and the independent variables (gender, birthplace, parents’ profession, area and kind of school and motivations towards the degree). In general terms, mean data out of the 12 items gathered in the instrument highlight that the relationships with students (children) and colleagues are pivotal. Nevertheless, our data reflect a lack of teacher training in leadership. In specific terms, the results point out that participants with teaching background, parents who are also teachers, experience additional wellbeing. Moreover, the results shed light on the importance of social, affective and motivational dimensions in the teaching profession and training as well as its pronounced connection with educational success.

It has been widely used in the Spanish-speaking world in order to derive words for \u0000use in dictionaries and/or teaching materials, but has received very little attention in English. \u0000The aim of this research was to identify the predictors of lexical availability (LA) in English as a \u0000second language (L2). Participants were 60 advanced students of English, enrolled in a 5-year \u0000English Teaching Programme. The lexical availability index (LAI) was obtained for two semantic categories (Body Parts, Food and Drink). Then correlation and multiple regression analyses \u0000were conducted in order to assess the relation between LA and four factors: familiarity, age of \u0000acquisition (AoA), frequency, and imageability. The results showed that both AoA and familiarity correlated highly with LA in Body Parts, but only AoA was a strong predictor of LA. In Food \u0000and Drink, familiarity and frequency had a moderate correlation with LA and only frequency \u0000was a significant predictor. These results are mostly in line with previous data in Spanish L1 \u0000and L2, and are of relevance for the learning and teaching of vocabulary in English L2.
