{"title":"Chinese audiovisual translation","authors":"Milad Mehdizadkhani, Luyu Chen","doi":"10.1075/forum.00028.meh","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1075/forum.00028.meh","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000 The increasing use of multilingualism in audiovisual products,\u0000 especially feature films, has attracted attention from audiovisual translation\u0000 (AVT) scholars; however, such research is missing in the Chinese AVT context.\u0000 This paper strived to fill this niche by exploring the common methods of the\u0000 rendition of a third language (L3) in Chinese dubbing, subtitling, and\u0000 fansubbing. The corpus of the study comprised six English-speaking feature films\u0000 alongside their fan and professional-created Chinese subtitles and dubs\u0000 available online, and its contents was mainly selected based on two criteria:\u0000 (i) the L3s used, for example, French, Indian, Swahili, Xhosa, and Russian, and\u0000 (ii) the availability of fan and pro-produced Chinese subtitles and dubs. Elle devient problématique une fois\u0000 traduite, car les termes et les syntagmes changent de contexte\u0000 géo-socio-culturel. Notre recherche s’oriente sur l’environnement contextuel des\u0000 termes concernant la culture et leur articulation dans le\u0000 rapport présenté lors de l’ouverture du 19e congrès du Parti\u0000 communiste chinois en 2017. En plus d’une attention particulière portée à la\u0000 stabilisation des formes langagières, depuis certains stéréotypes lexicaux\u0000 jusqu’à des habitus discursifs et notamment la présence de parallélismes, nous\u0000 étudions de près la créativité langagière, les difficultés de traduction et\u0000 leurs solutions dans un corpus parallèle français-chinois, assistées par des outils\u0000 textométriques. Une comparaison contrastive des spécificités de co-occurrences\u0000 thématiques autour de la culture entre le français et le chinois permet\u0000 d’éclairer les mécanismes d’émergence du langage politique chinois et fournit\u0000 également un accès privilégié aux contenus sociaux. The Singapore-specific linguistic landscape features heteroglossia and homophonic implications, and\u0000 these characteristics constitute untranslatable linguistic foreignness. In addition, this paper notes social and cultural\u0000 foreignness that serve the function of making readers feel what the writer feels (e.g., sorrow, nostalgia, and indignation), and\u0000 it is difficult to find an effective and suitable translation strategy to trigger empathy among target readers who do not share\u0000 social or cultural experiences. This paper, thus, emphasizes the importance of investigating the transference of feelings, and a\u0000 survey is conducted to gain reader-based insight into the suitability of offering supplementary materials in translation. Une même langue (le français, l’anglais, l’espagnol, etc.)\u0000 peut être associé à des manières différentes de parler du monde, associées à des cultures elles aussi différentes, au sein de\u0000 communautés différentes d’utilisateurs (Français, Belges francophones et Québécois ; Mexicains et Argentins ; etc.). Des ensembles\u0000 de locuteurs de cultures différentes qui se servent d’une même langue vont y puiser des termes différents pour évoquer une même\u0000 situation. Simultanément, des ensembles de locuteurs utilisant des langues différentes, mais proches par leurs cultures (par\u0000 exemple Belges francophones et néerlandophones), peuvent se servir alors de termes quasi-équivalents.\u0000 Pour saisir ce qui différencie deux cultures, il est très fécond de comparer les manières dont une même situation\u0000 y est mise en mots. The starting point is the consideration\u0000 that 21st-century societies are shaped by cross-cultural contact and interaction because of migration flows. Consequently,\u0000 parishes are culturally and linguistically diverse. In such a context, translation and interpreting services are of utmost\u0000 importance to ensure the integration of parishioners and preachers in the religious community. I intend to explore some of the\u0000 realities, needs, and challenges posed by interpreting in ecclesiastical settings in Spain. A mainly qualitative methodology based\u0000 on discourse analysis is used. Data come from empirical studies on related topics, an open questionnaire, and observation. The wide use of NMT for professional purposes reshapes the conditions of translation assignments. Moreover, the effects on the target text and language are not well known, although some studies already suggest a stronger influence of the source language on them. On the other hand, since many NMT tools are easily and freely available and even accessible via mobile devices, they are being increasingly used by non-professionals to carry out short translations mostly. These occasional translators use these tools both to understand a text originally written in a language they do not fluently speak (translation into their first language) and to publish a text in the language they do not master (translation into their second language or even into a language in which the user has poor or no knowledge at all). Finally, NMT is also present in everyday digital products even without users being aware of its intervention, for example in specific apps on smart devices. L’un de ces espaces est constitué par le texte. Les\u0000 processus de traduction et d’interprétation permettent de faire passer les idées, le sens des textes d’une culture à une autre.\u0000 Cependant, des éléments textuels chargés d’un poids culturel spécifique, plus marqué, exigent une compétence interculturelle\u0000 accrue de la part des traducteurs et des interprètes. Ces culturèmes (Vermeer\u0000 1983, Nord 1997, 2008, Lungu-Badea 2009) demandent un traitement différencié de leur part, entre autres, les\u0000 notes du traducteur en traduction écrite ou les explicitations des interprètes en interprétation orale.\u0000 Nous avons mené une expérience didactique visant à constater comment les étudiants peuvent appréhender les\u0000 compétences interculturelles pour être en mesure de traduire et de transmettre le contenu informatif d’un texte. La population\u0000 cible de l’expérience réalisée est constituée d’étudiants en traduction et en interprétation qui ont eu à traduire un texte riche\u0000 en culturèmes du français vers l’espagnol en suivant une méthodologie déterminée. Ils ont dû à posteriori rédiger des commentaires\u0000 traductologiques justifiant leurs choix de traduction ; le but ultime de cette démarche étant de connaître les principaux défis\u0000 qu’ils ont rencontrés lors du processus de la traduction et d’identifier les techniques appliquées pour les relever.
