Interviews were conducted using an interactionist approach to STEM identity development. Participants included 487 Mexican descent college students from across the United States (66.7% first-gen). The purpose of this study is to understand how Latina mothers who experienced childbirth during adolescence transition to parenthood and higher education. We conducted 13 in-depth interviews with Latina mothers enrolled in higher education. Findings support extent research on the importance of structural interventions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) while highlighting nuance in experiences of Latino males, including perceptions of stigma associated with participation. Moreover, the findings revealed the need to “burst the bubble” leaving the comfort zone, to grow academically and personally.
