The study's purpose was to critically analyze and evaluate the progress and barriers in implementing gender policies, with a keen focus on understanding their dynamics, challenges, and societal impacts. The study synthesized a wide array of literature through a methodical approach, encompassing empirical research, policy analyses, and theoretical discourses. This comprehensive review illuminated the multifaceted nature of gender inequality in Nigeria, revealing insights into income disparities, the undervaluation of women's unpaid care work, and the socio-cultural and political barriers impeding gender equality. The main findings underscore a pronounced gender inequality across various sectors, highlighting the significant yet often marginalized contributions of women, particularly in the agricultural sector and in unpaid domestic roles. The study revealed that while there have been strides in policy formulation, a chasm remains in effective implementation, with socio-cultural norms and lack of political will posing as formidable barriers. The study advocates for a holistic and multifaceted approach to gender policy enhancement in Nigeria. It calls for the establishment of quantifiable benchmarks for policy evaluation, the dismantling of patriarchal structures, and the promotion of educational and economic empowerment for women. The study emphasizes the necessity of inclusive, culturally sensitive, and impactful policies, urging collaborative efforts among various stakeholders for sustainable gender parity and empowerment. \u0000Keywords: Gender Policies, Women's Empowerment, Nigeria, Socio-Cultural Barriers, Policy Implementation.","PeriodicalId":253743,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Applied Research in Social Sciences","volume":"9 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138966522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigated nicknames students used for teachers in two girls’ Senior High Schools in Ghana, utilising Scott’s (1990) Sociological Theory on Resistance to Domination. Employing an ethnographic approach that includes participant observations, semi-structured interviews, and informal interactions with the students, the study revealed that ‘namers’ secretly nicknamed their referents and used these names in the absence of the ‘named’ mostly in informal conversations in both inside and outside of the classrooms. These nicknames are used to identify the teachers’ characteristics inside and outside the classroom, focusing on the teachers’ speech behaviours, fashion lifestyles, physical appearances, and personal habits. A key significance of the findings is that they contribute to the extant literature on nicknaming practices from a site that has been under-researched. Further, the study is a significant foundation for future exploration of students’ use of nicknames for teachers in Senior High Schools and other academic settings in Ghana and elsewhere. The study also has implications on the structure and use of language in the senior high school environments as most of the nicknames are coined in the English language and Twi. \u0000Keywords: Informal Conversations, Nicknames, Public Transcript, Senior High Schools, Teachers.","PeriodicalId":253743,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Applied Research in Social Sciences","volume":"38 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138967099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It empirically investigated whether industrial goods firms in Nigeria enjoy sustained success by focusing on core competencies like their counterparts in developed economies as documented in some prior literature. Specifically, the study determined whether strong brand name, strong sales force, innovation, agility, and strong creative thinking as dimensions of core competencies impact on organizational performance. To address this objective, primary data was collected using structured questionnaire measured on Likert summated rating scale. A sample size of 200 employees drawn from selected industrial goods firms was used for the study. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were used to illuminate the data and test hypotheses. The results revealed that strong brand name, strong sales force, and strong creative thinking positively and significantly impact on organizational performance. Despite its gross multi-dimensional effects on female students mainly, literature is limited on the critical determinants of related factors at the high school level. This research (therefore) aimed at understanding the causal factors of this burgeoning societal problem to control its current alarming trends. The researcher purposively and conveniently gathered data from 285 selected female high school students in the Cape Coast Metropolis, through questionnaires and a semi-structured interview guide. Four clusters of schools were studied in all: (3) three mixed and one single-sex school. After using chi-square and multiple linear regression statistical tools to analyse the data, findings revealed that 82% of students in mixed schools and only 20% in single-sex schools were in relationships. Teachers (1.8%) and school counsellors (4.9%) were also the least contacted student sources for decision-making information, whereas parents (41.1%) and peers (29.5%) were the most sought-after information sources due to the trust and confidence the respondents had in them. The researcher further observed that students' wrongly chosen data sources were detrimental to their psychosocial and academic lives. Parents were thus requested to seize every opportunity to discuss emerging romantic relationship issues with their daughters, to prevent them from taking problematic decisions as a result of consulting wrong sources that could eventually jeopardize their bright futures. Especially in mixed schools, it is recommended that counsellors equally endeavor to win the trust of students through efficient rapport establishment to ease discussions regarding any relevant emergent issues affecting their lives. Based on the research findings, it is essential for stakeholders in mixed schools particularly, to adopt a more aggressive and open-door policy to better inform students regarding their romantic relationship concerns. The study employed secondary data retrieved from the published financial records of 12 consumer goods listed firms in Nigeria over a period of 10 years spanning 2012 to 2021. The paper adopted four independent variables as measures of firm attributes which includes firm size (FSIZE), board composition (BSIZE, profitability (PROF) and firm growth (FGROW). On the other hand, the dependent variable which is financial reporting quality was proxy using Modified Jones Model. The dataset were analyzed using the descriptive statistics, diagnostic tests and inferential statistics. The study specified a linear model which was tested using the simple regression analysis as a result of the nature of the study. The findings revealed that board composition and firm growth have significant impact on financial reporting quality of listed consumer goods firms in Nigeria. Again, firm size and profitability have insignificant relationship with financial reporting quality of listed consumer goods firms in Nigeria.
