A corpus of scientific abstracts was analyzed to compare the frequency of implicit agent\u0000 se-constructions in abstracts written originally in Spanish and abstracts translated from English into Spanish. Both corpora tools\u0000 and t-tests were used for comparing data. The results indicate that the abstracts written originally in Spanish feature a more\u0000 frequent use of implicit agent se-constructions than the abstracts translated into Spanish. The researchers propose the use of\u0000 scientific abstracts, both originally written in Spanish and translated into Spanish, as pedagogical instruments to model how\u0000 implicit agent se-constructions operate, thereby promoting student-translators’ accurate use of such constructions, which are\u0000 frequently used not only in scientific abstracts but also in a wide range of language domains in the Spanish language.

Therefore, the present study was set up to investigate\u0000 the effect of fluency training on speech fluency, comprehensibility, and accentedness of interpreter trainees. Two groups of\u0000 interpreter trainees at a university in Iran took part in the study, receiving the same amount of instruction and practice\u0000 (12 hours over 4 weeks). The experimental group (N = 30) spent 33% of the time (i.e., 4 of the 12 hours in the\u0000 training program) on dedicated fluency strategy training, encouraging the memorization, repetition, and retelling of audio and\u0000 video materials. The remaining 67% was spent on training general speaking skills. The control group (N = 30) were\u0000 only taught general speaking skills in the training program but received no dedicated fluency training. Systematic interviews were\u0000 run to assess the interpreter trainees’ speech fluency, comprehensibility and accentedness, which were judged independently by\u0000 three expert raters at three moments of testing, i.e., pretest, immediate posttest, and delayed posttest (one month later). The\u0000 findings revealed that the fluency training significantly enhanced the interpreter trainees’ fluency, and to a lesser extent the\u0000 students’ comprehensibility but had only a marginal effect on accentedness. The pedagogical implication would be that awareness\u0000 training on speech fluency in EFL settings be included in interpreting training programs.
\u0000 Arab EFL learners encounter difficulty stressing English words, particularly those with -ate,\u0000 e.g. ‘ˈpercolate’, ‘ˈgerminate’, ‘ˈimpregnate’. They often stress the rightmost syllable. However, earlier studies included a\u0000 limited sample of such items. The present study further explores and verifies these preliminary findings. It aims at revealing any\u0000 coherent pattern in learners’ word stress strategies and tracing stress strategies associated with the stimuli’s word class or\u0000 length. Furthermore, it investigates the effect of specific instruction on the production of the stimuli. To estimate the impact\u0000 of training in stress placement on subjects’ accurate stress production, the subjects were enrolled in a nine-hour stress-training\u0000 course that extended over three weeks. Ninety infrequent words ending in -ate were used in pretest and posttest\u0000 pronunciation tasks with 102 third- and fourth-year Jordanian English majors. They had problems accurately producing the stimuli\u0000 and tended to place stress on the ultimate syllables. Stress was often assigned to the right syllable as the subjects were\u0000 prolonging the last vowel, i.e. the -ate syllable, and accentuating it in most stimuli. No significant\u0000 association existed between the subjects’ performance and word length or word classes of the stimuli. The posttest scores far\u0000 exceeded the pretests, proving explicit instruction’s benefits.

A few L2 studies\u0000 (Epoge, 2012; Park, 2016; Ying, 2005) have focused on determining the role that L2 proficiency may exert on\u0000 learners’ choices in bare, referential, and non-referential contexts. This paper provides data from 104 Spanish learners of\u0000 English (A2, B1, and B2 levels) and 32 native speakers of English. Results showed that participants tended to interpret reflexives\u0000 sloppily in bare and non-referential contexts, whereas strict readings prevailed in referential ones. There existed significant\u0000 differences in the interpretation of learners versus native speakers, whilst the differences among the three learner groups were\u0000 not so marked. However, the least proficient group differed most from native speakers.
