This study aimed to revisit the interpretation of\u0000 the negative meaning by concentrating on ta’ārof (ritual) offers produced by characters in Iranian films. First, these\u0000 items were identified and distinguished from their genuine counterparts based on the strategies used in their structures and analysing their\u0000 contextual features respectively. Then, the researcher proposed a model in which she adopted the notion of Leech’s (1983) meta-implicature (indirect implicature) to explicate the negative meaning of ta’ārof\u0000 offers. She grouped a series of effective factors in working out these meta-implicatures. Finally, a tentative hierarchy of stages for\u0000 identification and interpretation of ta’ārof offers in Iranian films were proposed.

Furthermore, sufficient attention has not been paid to the role of written corrective feedback (WCF) in task\u0000 repetition to reinforce attention to form. Moreover, studies exploring task repetition effects on learners with different prior knowledge of\u0000 the target structure are rare. This study attempted to bridge these lacunas. Seventy-nine upper-intermediate learners in Iran were divided\u0000 into four groups: task repetition with no feedback (TR), task repetition with metalinguistic feedback (TR+M), task repetition with direct\u0000 feedback (TR+D), and task repetition with mixed direct metalinguistic feedback (TR+DM). All groups performed an error correction test that\u0000 measured explicit knowledge, an elicited imitation test that tapped automatized explicit knowledge, and a picture-cued written production\u0000 test that measured written accuracy. Participants performed a dictogloss task and received WCF before repeating the same task. Subsequently,\u0000 they performed another dictogloss task with different content. Results revealed that the +Prior Knowledge learners in the TR+DM group gained\u0000 explicit knowledge and proved slightly better than the TR+D regarding written accuracy. None of the groups, however, could develop\u0000 automatized explicit knowledge.
\u0000 The aim of this article is to analyse the syntactic and semantic interclausal relations that hold with Old English verbs\u0000 of inaction. These verbs are studied from the perspective of juncture-nexus relations and the semantic relations Phase, Psych-action and\u0000 Causative. The results are compared on the grounds of the Interclausal Relations Hierarchy. The comparison of semantic content and syntactic\u0000 expression evidences discrepancies between too weak juncture-nexus types, such as clausal subordination, and very close semantic relations,\u0000 like Phase. Two main conclusions are drawn. Firstly, the Interclausal Relations Hierarchy allows us to describe the variation in the\u0000 complementation of inaction verbs in Old English; and to make predictions on the diachronic axis, given that the loss of finite clause\u0000 complementation and the change to infinitival complementation presented by Present-Day English verbs of inaction are fully predicted by the\u0000 IRH. Secondly, semantic relations and nexus types remain stable throughout the change, whereas juncture levels change.

El-Zawawy
\u0000 A complex sentence is described as such by virtue of its multiple constituents which vary from clauses, subclauses\u0000 to phrases. English and Arabic linguistic literature includes references to the issue of syntactic complexity, yet the approaches\u0000 are different. The present study seeks to investigate how Arab simultaneous interpreters translating from English into Arabic deal\u0000 with syntactically complex structures. To achieve this goal, the final debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump is selected\u0000 as the test-ground. The study finds that simultaneous interpreters operating from English into Arabic deal with complex structures\u0000 in different ways by adopting and adjusting their strategies. The dominant strategy is linearization, which is triggered by the\u0000 need to translate under time pressure. This strategy also unloads the simultaneous interpreter’s cognitive burden. Yet complete\u0000 linearization is impossible, since omission and compression may interfere as in the case of embedding and ‘that’ structures. Other\u0000 strategies, particularly addition and chunking, are also observable, being applied when interpreters find themselves faced with\u0000 asyndetic structures and multiple embedding.

Most research on modality addresses L2 English learners, leaving a gap in research in advanced language development in other languages. This paper addresses this gap by studying how heritage language (HL) speakers of Spanish express doubt and probability in Spanish and how the lexicogrammatical features they use across genres reveal how they express these meanings. Drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics and pragmatics, this study examines modality in 125 texts written in Spanish by HL students in the U.S., including narratives, expositions, article reviews, personal responses, and research papers. The results reveal that students use the most modality resources in personal responses and the least in reviews. This work offers insights about the interpersonal resources writers choose to express their argumentative stance and the socio-pragmatic competence in writing among HL students.
