{"title":"Accentuation types of noun word forms in Old Persian","authors":"K. The materials from Old Persian glossaries were used to form the register with 202 noun word forms in volume. Using traditional methodology that is accepted in Iranian comparative linguistics the author distributed available lexicon to seven accentuation types, each of them consisting of noun word forms with a stressed syllable of the same quality. In addition, some word forms that show unusual accentuation patterns because of the etymological uncertainty, sporadic appearance or possible orthographical mistakes in original cuneiform texts were referred to a separate accentuation type. According to the position of the stressed syllable in a noun word form every accentuation type was divided into accentuation models, the total number of which is 20 units. The author gives a special linguistic commentary within each accentuation type that explains the conditions of the functioning and diachronic evolution of its type. In addition, this paper shows accentuation influence on morphology and morphophonology of Old Persian nouns. Besides Old Persian lexicon, the article deals with Avestan and Pahlavi noun word forms, which are closely related to Old Persian. The use of lexicon of related languages assists in more accurate diachronic analysis of accentuation processes and better demonstrates Indo-European lingual universals within the Old Persian lexicon.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. A. van Dijk to analyze the position of the Chinese side regarding the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, declared by senior officials of the People’s Republic of China in the period from the beginning of the large-scale invasion on February 24, 2022 to the end of August, 2022. The structural, lexical-semantic and pragmatic aspects of the texts of the relevant documents posted on the official Internet resources of the state authorities of the People’s Republic of China are analyzed, taking into account the current international political context, the actual interests of China in the global and regional dimensions, through the prism of which it is considered appropriate to see, in particular, official Beijing’s rhetoric regarding possible ways to achieve peace. The author conducted a detailed analysis of the texts of the official statements of the President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Yi, the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Yang Jiechi, as well as messages on the official Internet resources of the state authorities of the People’s Republic of China about their negotiations with foreign partners, where the issue of the war in Ukraine was raised. Based on the results of the analysis of fragments of the discourse, taking into account the current geopolitical context, the key discursive goals that the Chinese side is most likely trying to achieve are determined, namely: positive self-presentation of China as a peace-loving state, which, moreover, steadfastly adheres to the norms and principles of international law against the background of creating a negative the image of Western countries, first of all, its key geopolitical competitor – the USA – as states that contribute to the escalation of war for the sake of achieving their own geopolitical goals, an attempt to neutralize the negative image of the Russian Federation by promoting theses about the “historical causes” of the conflict as a justification for the fact of aggression.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. The determination of the productivity of word-formation processes of the modern literary Hindi language is carried out on the basis of prefix, suffix, prefix-suffix methods of word-formation and stem-formation. To cover the topic of the proposed research, the author analyzes the scientific works of Ukrainian, European and Indian linguists to reveal the concepts of «derivational processes» in language, «biblicality» in linguistic culture. The scientists conclude that the lexical system of a language, including the biblical language, reflects the mentality and culture of a particular ethnic group and its perception of the world. The paper also considers the typological features of the word-formation methods of the modern literary Hindi language and offers the comparative characteristics of suffixes and prefixes, semantic and structural features of the biblical origin vocabulary based on the works of Ukrainian, European and Asian linguistics. The author finds out that the study of the biblical vocabulary of the modern literary Hindi language determines the national and cultural patterns of the Hindi speakers in India, Christians in particular, who use the biblical origin vocabulary in everyday life. The research establishes the most productive derivatives for the formation of nouns and adjectives, as well as active word-formation methods of nouns and adjectives of the biblical origin of the modern literary Hindi language. The scientific research identifies the main derivational methods of nouns and adjectives that have a systematic functioning in the biblical text of the modern literary Hindi language. {"title":"Perception of the English speech of Ukrainians by non-native speakers","authors":"N. The focus is on the phenomenon of the foreign accented speech and the claim that due to interference of two or more language systems in the consciousness of the speaker, the speech, which is produced and is the result of long-term mastering of the foreign language, is imbued with a foreign accent. A foreign accent is a language learner’s speech characteristic. It has certain features on segmental and suprasegmental levels which distinguish it from the speech of the native speaker, marking its owner as a ‘foreigner’. These features are studied in order to improve further learning of the language and help learners to avoid potential mistakes that impede their communication and forge a negative image in the eye of a listener. To study the perception of foreign speech three main dimensions are singled out: degree of foreign accent, or degree of accentedness, speech comprehensibility and speech intelligibility. The degree of accentedness measures the level of the foreign accent of the speaker by the listener, which ranges from a slight accent to a strong accent. Comprehensibility measures whether the message is understood as a whole, whereas intelligibility is responsible for the recognition of specific words or phrases. Following these criteria, the speech of ten Ukrainians is analyzed by 47 non-native speakers of English. It is concluded that the lower the rate of an accent is, the higher the comprehensibility of the message gets. {"title":"Phrasemes as signs of secondary nomination and the result of phraseosemiosis","authors":"S. Vasko","doi":"10.32589/2311-0821.2.2022.274923","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32589/2311-0821.2.2022.274923","url":null,"abstract":"The article presents the historiography of the issue connected to the terminological essence of phraseological units and the discussion concerning the development of their optimal classification, which took place among the representatives of historical-etymological, systemic-structural and functional-pragmatic/parametric phraseology. The results of searches in the field of phraseology are systematized through the prism of historical and etymological studies, and it is concluded that the efforts of linguists were aimed at reconstructing the origin of its units. Arguments are presented in favour of the universal nature of the classification of stable compounds, developed by L. H. Skrypnyk within the framework of system-structural syntax, where their differentiation according to the models of word combinations and sentences of different types was proposed as a basis. At the same time, special attention is focused on the concept developed by N. M. Amosova and presented in her work that studies the basics of English phraseology, where the author argued for the important role of context for a grammar-based combination of words that makes up a fixed expression of a specific language, English in particular, in which the degree of word autonomy is much higher than in other languages due to its analyticity. Besides, the paper deals with the prerequisites for shifting the emphasis in phraseological studies to the functional-parametric approach, which application contributed to broadening the view of the essence of phraseological units based on two criteria: the criterion of their reproducibility and the criterion of wordiness.The discussion about the choice of the optimal term to designate the object of phraseology in the broad sense is summarized and it is linguistically substantiated that such a multifunctional hyperonym is the term “phraseologism” and its full semantic equivalent – the phraseme, formed by analogy with linguistic terms with an -emic component.The evolution of the term “phraseme” in the conditions of the formation of a new cognitive-discursive phraseology, where the concept of phraseosemiosis is included in its scientific definition, is considered in detail. It is proved and demonstrated on the concrete example of the English phraseme with a quantitative component “baker’s dozen (13)” that the result of this process is a phraseme as a sign of secondary nomination, the internal form of which encodes features that concentrate in a stable form valuable and figurative meanings of the national worldview and ethno-unique features of national life and national spirit, verbalized according to the laws of the lexical-semantic and grammatical systems of each language and easily reproduced in the minds of speakers of this language in the form of ready-made compounds.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. Minchak","doi":"10.32589/2311-0821.2.2022.274925","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32589/2311-0821.2.2022.274925","url":null,"abstract":"The article examines the sovereignonyms of Russia as an aggressor state waging a brutal, but unprovoked, war against Ukraine recorded in modern online publications and social networks. The article substantiates the emergence of neosovereignonyms by the need of Internet communicators to name the state that conducts aggressive actions against Ukraine as accurately as possible, and to convey in these names the emotions caused by such actions. It is proved that the analyzed neosovereignonyms explain the defining characteristics of the Russian Federation today: formation of neo-totalitarianism; inconsistency of economic and military power with ambitions for world hegemony; absurdity, from the point of view of Ukrainians, of domestic and foreign policy; underdevelopment of civil society; lack of critical thinking even among the educated population; cult of cruelty, atrophy of empathy for Ukrainians among ordinary Russians; slavish obedience, inability of Russian society for mass anti-war protests. Most of the analyzed sovereignonyms have a clear negative evaluative color, thanks to which the emotions of the nominees, such as anger and contempt, are expressed explicitly or implicitly, which serves as an indicator of the attitude of the Ukrainian society towards the aggressor state.According to the structure, the studied onyms can be simple one-word, complex one-word and multi-component ones. From the point of view of derivation, one-word sovereignonyms for the designation of the Russian Federation as an aggressor state were formed by a lexical-semantic method (onymization and transonymization), i.e., they are neosemants, and by morphological methods – compounding, affixation and abbreviation. The current intensive movement of the human masses has led to a departure from the conceptualization of language as rooted in a specific locus, to its deterritorialization, to a shift from the language itself to its usage by an individual. The practical part of the article focuses on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel “Americana” (2013). The scientific reflection refers to the analysis of the personality of the immigrants, who are the main characters of the novel, and the changes they experience when moving to a new country. The aim of the article is to study the ways of self-formation of foreigners in the context of their language self-identification. The language regime is present in the work on several important levels: preservation of the Igbo and resistance to the total dominance of the English language, linguistic assimilation of immigrants, assertion of the foreigner’s linguistic identity, language as a component of structural racism.Linguistic assimilation of immigrants causes them to abandon their native language, especially when it comes to migrants who speak the language of the country of settlement and, accordingly, speak to their children only in the language of a receiving country. At the same time, the novel “Americana” conveys the protagonist’s return to her own way of speaking, that is, Nigerian English. This shift signals her resistance to the complete negation of her identity in favor of the expectations and norms of the dominant group. In general, language is important for the formation of immigrant identity. The sensitivity of residents to pronunciation as well as to the level of command of the community’s language often causes alienation of the foreigner and a prejudiced attitude towards him/her. Therefore, immigrants try to get rid of labeling through language. They imitate the accents and pronunciation of the specific locus of their settlement. However, the main character of the novel “Americana” declares a new understanding of linguistic identity, which is closely related to the modern positioning of immigrants as those who are not ashamed of their difference, but on the contrary, respect their difference and insist on it.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University.
