Particular attention is paid to lexemes with phonetic indicators of connotation, i.e. such language units (sound-symbolic words) that have markers of qualitative and quantitative sound expression. Words with quantitative intensification of respective sounds and sound combinations in them are interpreted as phonetically expressive, which is elucidated in emphatic sound stretching. It was found that connotative semantics is better manifested in qualitative intensification of certain elements of the phonetic-phonological system of the modern Ukrainian language, which is connected with the theory of sound symbolism. Here, sound intensity of either the first or the last word in a sentence acts as a vivid expression of connotation. The research results showed that phonetic units being structural components of text formation, in particular prose, in combination with other components (lexical-semantic, grammatical, etc.) play an important role in the organization of the integral connotative semantics of the literary text with all its elements (emotionality, intensity, semantic element and figurative constituent). In addition, they contribute to the expression of the literary text dynamics and aesthetics. The obtained research results may be employed to expand the possibilities of studying connotative semantics in literary discourse and deepen the effectiveness of linguistic research in the field of ethno-, socio- and psycholinguistics.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. In order to fundamentally define and systematize the means of realization of the category of evaluation and evaluative predicates in Chinese, the research considers such concepts as “evaluation”, “linguistic picture of the world”, “evaluative predicate”. The author analyzes a wide range of investigations by foreign, Chinese in particular, and domestic sinologists, aimed at highlighting the features of the evaluative predicates, as it has helped to make a thorough systematization of the research of evaluative predicates and a mechanism for realizing evaluation in Modern Chinese. The study determines that the concept of evaluation should be considered inseparable from the Chinese linguistic worldview, which is the result of the process of learning about the surrounding reality (history, culture, language, etc.) of a certain people. The cultural heritage of China covers all spheres of activity of the Chinese and has a significant influence on the process of forming the worldview of the Chinese people, in particular, on their thinking. The author concludes that the evaluative predicate represents the most meaningful and informatively loaded part of the judgment, which contains the evaluation of a person (speaker or nominal group specified in the sentence) in relation to the objective world (situation or person). The research classifies evaluative predicates that determine a person’s subjective evaluation of an object from the objective world. It considers the mechanisms of evaluation implementation in Modern Chinese and systematizes the classification of evaluation means.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. The concept of the triad “markedness – marking / mark – marker” is characterized in the context of (inter-)discursive and (inter-)textual processes, where the former consists in the fact that if markedness is a phenomenon, marking / mark is a process, then a marker is a result. At the same time, the definition of the concept of “linguistic marker” is proposed as a clear system of language units of different levels, which expresses the interlevel status of the category of communicative intention and enables the selection of the most optimal among them for expressing the intentional needs of a linguistic personality. Linguistic markers are represented by: (a) discursive markers responsible for non-linguistic knowledge (discourse level), (b) language markers responsible for linguistic knowledge (text level).","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. Firstly, the authors describe the methodology used in the free associative experiment. In particular, they provide general characteristics of the questionnaire define stimuli (English crisis, crash, stress, pandemic, trauma / Polish kryzys, upadek, stres, pandemia, uraz), characterize the main participants of the free associative experiment (200 respondents, among which there are 75 Englishmen (representatives of Great Britain) and 125 Poles (representatives of the Republic of Poland)) aged 17-23 and 31-39), outline the stages of working out the reactions of Englishmen and Poles to stimuli with the semantics of resilience. Secondly, it is proven that the free associative experiment is aimed at studying the psycholinguistic meaning of a word, its categorical and objective meaning, the specificity of the meaning of some words, the reference words of comparative constructions, the connections between words, the organization of the human lexicon. Thirdly, the preparatory, practical and analytical operational stages of working with STIMULUS are described in detail according to the responses given by the English and Poles. Finally, the psycholinguistic interpretation of the responses to stimuli with the semantics of resilience with an emphasis on the coincidence of semes (from archisemes to differential semes) was carried out to confirm the respondents’ thinking with the help of synonymous associations.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. The material for the study was the speech delivered in 2017 by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier. In this paper, prosody is considered from the standpoint of pragmaphonetics as one of the effective rhetorical means of persuasion, which not only forms the expressiveness of speech and makes political speeches more attractive to listeners, but also helps to achieve pragmatic goals of the speaker. The article analyzes the peculiarities of functioning of certain prosodic means (stress, pausation, speech melody, tempo and rhythm) during a politician’s public speech and defines the role of prosody in the implementation of functions specific to inaugural rhetoric. Through changes in the prosody of the speech some prosodic contrasts are created, which perform an expressive function, provide contact between the speaker and the audience, allow to avoid monotony and further enhance certain fragments of the message, thus drawing the listeners’ attention to the key concepts of the speech.According to the results of the experimental phonetic research, the importance of modifications of prosodic parameters for the realization of the communicative intentions of the speaker has been illustrated on the example of some fragments of the German president’s inaugural speech. It has been found that in order to increase the listeners’ attention, the speaker uses such prosodic means as more frequent emphasis, slowing tempo, frequent use of longer pauses, and speaking fragments of the message in an extended tone range.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. Pain depiction in a literary text is studiedby encoding unpleasant emotions while using methods of conceptual metaphor and metonymy, as well as corpusanalysis. The research presupposes five stages: a) analysis of the keywords in the text which are eitherpain-indicative or pain-descriptive; b) corpus analysis of lemmas “pain”, “hurt” and others pain-related words;c) reconstruction of conceptual metaphors and metonymies of PAIN; d) reconstruction of narrative patternsof the motif of pain; e) analysis of affected character's profile. The initial research suggests the following:i) the motif of pain has a tendency to be marked by descriptive and indicating verbal units which are widely usedin the medical field; ii) conceptual metaphors and metonymies of PAIN tend to be less prototypical in a literarytext than those in a natural language; iii) the motif of pain appears in a literary narrative through a set of imagesand actions zoomed on the characters' traumatic unpleasant experience; iv) the two main sets of narrativeevents, that are structurally indicative of the motif of pain are believed to exist. The first set revolves aroundany explicit traumatic experience, with the latter becoming a salient point of the plot, while the second setresorts to depicting a more implicit process of a character accumulating discomfort and emotional traumain the studied novels.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. It shows that language and culture are closely related categories coexisting on the principle of joint development and interdependence. The main language tools of transmitting cultural experience proved to be lexical, grammatical, pragmatical and stylistic means reflecting social ideals, values, concepts and cultural codes. The study of cultural connotation of language means reveals the role of language in the person of culture image formation as a value category constructing a dynamic system of ideal concepts. The author concludes that the person of culture image, predominantly as a form of collective reflection, is defined by social and cultural realities, the representation of which is impossible beyond language as it is a set of language means, which conveys the sense of this concept. The analysis of the person of culture image in the linguo-culturological aspect allowed to define and characterize its main features, such as conceptuality; standard; representation through social narratives, the basis for which is provided by creators – architects of material and spiritual values; dependence on ethnic mentality, social and cultural realities fixed in language and thus – dynamics, combination of stable, invariant and variable features.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. The advertising slogan, being limited by space and time, is viewed as an important part of any marketing campaign. In a similar manner to previous studies, this paper confirms that a slogan is an effective type of storytelling for brands. However, it differs from the tagline, which is supposed to be long lasting. In an endeavour to convey some characteristics or information about the product and make it memorable for the consumer, brand designers resort to various linguistic devices that make the advertising language effective. The analysis of commercial advertising slogans and taglines demonstrated that such phonological devices as assonance and rhyme are infrequent, while alliteration is the most productive sound technique. As for onomatopoeia, it appeared to be the rarest device in the analysed bulk of slogans and taglines. The obtained results show the capacity of these sound techniques to enhance brand image. Numerous examples provided in the paper are tailored to support this statement. Moreover, the paper addresses the issue of sound symbolism, since the interest in its manifestation in marketing is on the rise. Thus, from a phonosemantic vantage point, the most productive phonemes are sibilants, plosives and sonorants. Their recurrent character contributes to the creation of a brand image. The overall results may have significant implications for marketing teams that seek to create ear-catching and memorable slogans and taglines as well as shed light on the consumer’s psychology.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. An enormous number of new words in this industry are of a compelling interest to linguists, though, paradoxically, these lexemes appear to be practically unknown to scholars. As a rule, new words in the fashion industry, especially blends, cause challenges in translation. Hence, the author’s main objective was to reveal the structural and semantic features of new lexemes created by blending, that is by combining two other words into one. The paper provides structural classification of blends based on the order of shortened elements, interlinks and overlaps to facilitate adequate decoding. Total, partial and overlapping telescopic words were singled out and analysed accordingly. Insight into semantics of these words enabled to construct the most common taxa, among which are lexico-semantic groups 'clothes', 'footwear', 'accessories', 'beauty', 'fashion industry', 'style', 'beauty imperfections', 'trendy color', etc., represented by blends. Such blends, or telescopic words, constantly appear in the sphere of fashion and assign a formidable task to a translator. Thus, the main lexical, grammatical, lexico-grammatical transformations applied in the translation of blends are described. The results indicate that transcribing, transliteration, adaptive transcoding and explication, or the combination of them, are the most common transformations. But in the course of the research several other methods of transferring the meaning of blends were identified, namely loan translation, the creation of new blends, zero translation, omission and transposition. Profound research of fashion industry neologisms remains relevant as the process of nomination goes on.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. The multiword units under study constitute a specific type of clichés alongside nickname clichés, termemes and sentencemes. The distinctive characteristic of this class of phrasemes is that they designate a ritualized speech act which correlates with an internal state of the speaker, a moment of time, or a specific event or state of affairs. Formulemes are to be regarded as a hyponym of formulaic sequences and formulas viewed, in turn, as multiword units. Depending on whether the source language formuleme’s formal and/or semantic constituents are fully or partially retained in the target language, formulemes may be rendered literally or using translation shifts. If the target language formuleme’s form and meaning are identical to those of its source language counterpart, word-for-word translation is used, which, however, proves to be an infrequent occurrence in English-to-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-to-English translation. Far more common are cases when the target language formuleme’s form and/or meaning are non-identical to those of its source language counterpart, and so a translation shift takes place. The three basic shifts employed in rendering formulemes are found to be metaphoric transformation, explicitation and antonymic translation. In addition to the three techniques mentioned, contextual translation of formulemes is occasionally possible when conditioned by the pragmatics of the speech act.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University.
