Many variant spellings reflect various phonetic phenomena (reflexion of *ě, assimilation, dissimilation, simplification, softness / hardness of consonants, etc.) in the text and the formation of morphological norms (inflection of nominal parts of speech, verbs, etc.) of the Ukrainian language of the Old Ukrainian period. The subject of the linguistic analysis were the letters of the Kyiv Magistrate, issued to confirm the Magdeburg law of the city of Kyiv by the Polish rulers from 1544 to 1659. The collection, which is now in the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Kyiv (Fond 62. Inventory 1. Unit 1), contains privileges copied for his own use by K. Krichevets in the first half of the 18th century. The signed privileges are in the Old Ukrainian language of the corresponding period, but some of them are translations from Latin and Polish. It remains unknown whether the owner of the collection copied from already translated documents or ordered the translation from A. Trotsina and M. Yakgelnytskyi, which were recorded as translators therein.Linguistic fluctuations are present in the forms of the same words and in different words, often different variant spellings occur side by side on the same page. Having studied the variety of parallel forms in the analyzed source, we singled out the reasons for their appearance: the lack of normalization of spelling features, in particular the transmission of individual sounds, the incompleteness of linguistic processes at that time in the language, the preservation of traditions and the influence of the living language element, the mutual influence of the phonetic and morphological systems of the Church Slavonic and Polish languages with Ukrainian. The note reveals the interaction of the systems of the named languages, which manifested itself in fluctuations in various reflections in writing - reflection of sonorous in the middle of a word, changes of sonorous at the beginning of a word, reflexes *dj, *tj, *gt / *kt, *je at the beginning of a word, variant endings in the declension of nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. Tesnière to the present day, elucidates the relationship between distribution and valence, reveals the conditions for realizing potential valence in the context of modern French artistic prose works, elucidates characteristic syntactic constructions for the realization of non-valent, univalent, divalent, trivalent and tetravalent verbs. The purpose of the article is to outline the reasons and regularities of the decrease and increase in the valence of the French verb in the literary text. The material of the research is the syntactic constructions of nine novels by Goncourt laureates of the 21st century, which are reference texts of modern French literary prose. The applied structural research method determined the use of distributive and component analyses, as well as analysis by direct components. It was found that the potential valence established according to the distributional characteristics does not often coincide with the realized valence of the verb in a specific text. The realization of valence is also influenced by the author’s opinion, in particular, this is manifested in the use of agrammatic constructions and the occasional use of verbs, which is provoked by a violation of the distributional characteristics and potential valence of verbs in view of their semantics. The reduction of semantic-syntactic valence in the context of an artistic work is carried out due to the use of ellipses in the dialogues of the characters, which is caused by the author’s desire to reproduce oral speech. An increase in semantic and stylistic valence, in particular in causative and factitive quadrivalent constructions, occurs in the texts of those authors whose style involves the use of syntactically complicated polypropositional sentences. Research perspectives are determined by the field of cognitive syntax, in particular by questions of the roles of circumstances and syntactic synonymy, as well as the reproduction of the prototype of the expressed situation in the distributional characteristics and realization of the valence of the verb.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. Ovsienko","doi":"10.32589/2311-0821.1.2022.263119","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32589/2311-0821.1.2022.263119","url":null,"abstract":"In the present paper, we characterize a term as a multifunctional phenomenon and define the system of its functions that is quite complicated, and even more complex than the corresponding system of a non-term (commonly used word). For instance, any term performs the sign function. The nominative (representative) function is nonspecific for a term, but necessarily present within the system of its functions. It is closely connected with the significative one and they are often considered together. A term also performs the communicative (informative) function, which characterizes it as a means of transferring certain content and stylistic information to the recipient, with some feedback following it. The educative function of a term is one of the ways to implement the communicative function of a language sign, but it slightly differs from the knowledge-sharing function, which serves as the second way to implement the same general function. The communicative function is closely connected to the pragmatic function of a term, and it is determined by its connection with participants of communication, specific conditions and the field of communication, while depending on the directive that the originator chooses in order to influence the recipient. As a lexical element, particularly in the language of science and technology, a term (along with other lexical units) can perform the heuristic function, the function of discovering new knowledge, scientific cognition, and revealing the truth. The most important functions of a term also include the cognitive function, which defines it as a result of a long-term process of understanding the essence of things, facts of objective reality and human spiritual life, and as verbalization of a special concept that can primarily be not only an object of contemplation but even a manifestation of sense knowledge. The functions of knowledge record/transfer function are also inherent to a term. Availability of these functions in a term depends on a complex of general linguistic and term-related factors. It has been concluded that all functions performed by lexical units of a commonly used language are inherent to terms as well.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. Shkvorchenko","doi":"10.32589/2311-0821.1.2022.263132","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32589/2311-0821.1.2022.263132","url":null,"abstract":"The article attempts to build a multimodal model of toxic political communication and determine common and distinctive features of the semiotization of political toxicity in the media environment of the United States, Great Britain and Ukraine. Toxic political communication is interpreted as a type of interaction characterized by a high degree of aggressive (verbal and/or paraverbal) behavior of various participants in the political discourse, which causes moral harm or discriminates against the opponent based on race, nationality or gender resulting in such politician(s) being perceived and then defined as toxic. The constructed model of toxic political communication takes into account multimodal mechanisms of the discursive expression of toxicity (verbal, paraverbal, extralingual), modes of expanding the toxic effect (direct, indirect, and mediated), mechanisms of perception and image formation of politicians (toxic vs. positive) in the media environment of the respective countries. We determined that toxicity is manifested in derogatory statements by politicians, which contain insults, name-calling, ridiculing, emotional and inclusive utterances aimed at polarization and causing psychological and/or image damage to participants in the political debate (opponents). Toxic paraverbal co-speech means are divided into prosodic and gestural-mimic forms, which include aggressive, caustic, derogatory, paternalistic, pompous tone of speech, gestures that violate the personal boundaries of the interlocutor, exaggerated facial expressions. Extralingual forms of toxic communication include poster colors, electoral campaign symbols, clothing, rally sites, music, etc., which intensify the damaging effect of actions/utterances of a politician who is defined as toxic in the media. We found that contrasting forms of the semiotization of political toxicity in the media environment of the United States, Great Britain and Ukraine are determined by the relevant information agendas for each of the countries, for example, racism and intolerance towards migrants (USA), Partygate (Great Britain), zrada (betrayal) vs. peremoha (victory) (Ukraine) and others. Common to the three linguistic cultures is the aggressive type of politician-speaker, whose utterances/behavior are prone to dramatizing and aimed at causing psychological damage to the opponent’s personality through direct or indirect derogatory images accompanied by prosodic, gestural and facial emphases.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. For this purpose, we have used the following methods: general scientific methods of analysis, logical deduction, synthesis and generalization; method of sampling to select materials for examination; methods of definition-based and context-based analysis as well as an interpretation method which enabled us to make conclusions regarding mechanisms of selecting accurate and expressive linguistic means to create a psychological portrait of an elderly woman in a literary text.It was found that language ways which that enabled the author Emma Healey to create a psychological portrait of an elderly woman, and helped the translator Anna Tsvira to recreate it successfully are as follows: bunching, monotonous repetition of pronouns; phraseologisms; the use of verbs that depict psychological and behavioral reactions; swearing; lexical units of negative attitude and judgment (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and adverbial phrases); individual (author-coined), image metaphors and comparisons; stylistic devices (antithesis, repetition); bunching of interrogative questions, multiple use of negative particle “not”, punctuation marks. The said linguistic means enable the reader to interpret the psychoemotional condition of an elderly woman: projecting (attribution) of one’s own state onto other people; inadequate physiological manifestation of emotions; inner conflict, inner fears (caused by biological aspects of aging); awareness of psychological changes due to new signs of a progressing illness. With the help of the abovementioned linguistic means, the author / translator managed to preserve the atmosphere of instinctive, illogical, and partially even absurd feeling of extreme fear and terror experienced by the main character, and represent Maud’s illness as an invincible obstacle that renders the woman unable to live a normal life within the society, to create a psychological portrait of this character and arouse an intended emotion in the reader – the empathy they feel when they begin to experience the main character’s emotions as if these were their own.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. The aim of the article is to outline the basic principles of writing on which modern French is based, to study graphic complexes that fix etymological words, usually from Latin in different epochs, to establish a graphic inverter of etymological letter signs, to reveal the evolution of graphic etymology. The article substantiates that the graphic system of the French language is multisystemic and represents a variability in the use of different principles of writing (phonogram, morphogram and ideovisual or logogram) and criteria for functioning of graphic units in order to convey information as accurately as possible. The appearance of etymological letters is due to bringing French closer to Latin, giving it the status of special prestige, as well as maintaining a connection with the origins. The analysis of the graphic inventory established that the graphic etymology is peculiar only to graphemes that transmit consonant sounds. Among such graphic complexes, doublings or “geminants” were found, which graphically reflect etymological words, as well as some one-letter complexes. The presented means of graphic fixation was very popular in the Middle French period of the development of the French language, which became entrenched and acquired its further development in subsequent epochs (Renaissance and Enlightenment). At the same time, such popularization of graphic etymology led to the use of false unjustified etymology in writing. The studied corpus of graphemes clearly demonstrated the general tendency to simplify the phonogram principle of writing and the growth of the etymological principle throughout the history of the formation of the graphic system of the French language.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. The purpose of the work is to study the differences between the use of military and political euphemisms of the German language from other types of euphemisms and linguistic means of countering manipulation with their help in the conditions of a hybrid war. The material selected by a continuous sample was analyzed using the contextual-interpretive method. To achieve the goal, a number of tasks were solved: 1) the concept of “euphemism” was clarified, 2) functional and pragmatic features of military-political euphemisms were determined, 3) linguistic means of countering the manipulation of the recipients’ consciousness by using military-political euphemisms in the German media space in the conditions of a hybrid war were established. After February 24, 2022, a reformatting of the German-language official discourse in the mass media is observed from uncertainty to condemnation of the Russian-Ukrainian war. One of the means of manipulating consciousness in the conditions of modern hybrid warfare, actively used by politicians and journalists, is euphemism. Fixation of war in the German language develops as a process of euphemism formation and its overcoming: an exposure of “language corruption” as one of the manipulation types, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, detection of the so-called “foreign meanings” in the war language.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. In this respect semiosis is defined as the action of a sign, a dynamic process of meaning-making and meaning-interpretation realized through multimodal semiotic modes which collectively construct the meaning, communicated in these situations. This constructing is proceeded with the help of conflictives as emergent discursive constructs, the result of interactive constructing by means of verbal, nonverbal and graphic semiotic resources functioning in different stages of conflict communicative process. The linguosemiotic space of their realization is in the plane of disharmony of interpersonal relations of characters and its semiosis is built on cognitive, semiotic, communicative, and pragmatic specifics of conflictives as operational units of conflict discourse. Moreover, the appropriate inferences require understanding of cognitive, psychological, social, and cultural aspects accompanying narration. The aim of the study is also to establish a link between different approaches to the interpretation of conflict communication development and methods of their research in modern scientific studies. Multimodal nature of conflictives comprises several modes of multimodality for the analysis of conflict semiosis in fiction discourse: verbal, nonverbal, visual, auditory, kinetic etc. These patterns of meaning combination or meaning multiplication through different semiotic modes together construct the meaning, communicated and interpreted in the situations of interpersonal conflicts in discourse area of character in modern English fiction discourse. To achieve the objectives of research, a semiotic approach to the paradigm of conflict discourse approaches is applied, together with the elements of conversational analysis, multimodal discourse analysis, pragmatic analysis. The obtained results show the capacity of the semiotic approach to the conflict studies to enhance the effectiveness of linguistic research in the field of conflict studies.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University. Media discourse is particularly favourable to innovations and serves as a “proving ground” for testing the accuracy and vitality of COVID-related neologisms, from which the most successful examples of linguo-creative practice enter dictionaries. The author investigates the ranking of key words in lexicographic sources of recent years, analyzes the extralinguistic preconditions for changing COVID-related vocabulary to vaccine-related vocabulary. The latter represents the second wave in the development of COVID-related neologisms with the central lexeme vax which is described as the semantic innovation, shortened from the words vaccine, vaccination or vaccinate. The research systematizes key trends among COVID-related neologisms, in particular: active functioning of shortenings with high derivational and expressive potential, dominance of suffixal and prefixal ways of word formation, compounding and shortenings, prevalence of ironic nominations as a method of psychological self-defense, and of hypernymic nominations (COVID) over hyponymic ones (Delta, Omicron) in discourse, differentiation between different disease states depending on the duration and complexity of its consequences (long COVID and covidcito). Besides, the metaphorical nature of human thinking determines the desire of a person to describe the disease through the prism of conceptual metaphors. The most frequent conceptual metaphor in our sample turned out to be PANDEMIC IS A WAR, which demonstrates the global and catastrophic consequences of the pandemic due to its correlation with such a domain as war.","PeriodicalId":217176,"journal":{"name":"MESSENGER of Kyiv National Linguistic University.
