Kane 2006, 2013), this paper aims at analyzing controllers’ perspectives of their performance in radiotelephony communications in English, utilizing data generated through the ongoing validation process of EPLIS, the Aviation English Proficiency Exam for Brazilian Air Traffic Controllers. This paper reports one phase of a broader multistage mixed-methods study and focuses on the consequences inference. Part of the data generated from a 65-item questionnaire answered by Brazilian Air Traffic Controllers who got proficiency Level 3 (considered non-operational) and Level 4 (considered by ICAO as the minimum level necessary to control aircraft using the English language) is analyzed. The questionnaire was divided into 3 parts: test-takers’ perceptions of the rating scale established by ICAO; test-takers’ perceptions of their proficiency while controlling aircraft in English; and problems they faced while controlling in English.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135950249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, it is crucial to assess both interactive listening, when listening occurs together with speaking, and listening in isolation, when there is no speaking or interaction. The purpose of assessing listening in isolation is to reduce the influence of skills that are not relevant to the construct, that is, to minimize construct irrelevant variance (S. Messick 1994). This article describes a project that can be followed by test developers to address the initial step in the development of a test to assess pilots’ listening in isolation: the construct definition. The project is framed within an interactionalist perspective wherein a test construct is defined based on a combination of the abilities that those taking the test should have and the tasks that they should be able to perform (L. Bachman 2007). It is also informed by the work of L. Bachman/ A. Palmer (2010) and the framework proposed by U. Knock/ S. Macqueen (2020) for the development of language assessments for professional purposes. The project outlined in this article may also be of interest to test developers who wish to investigate different constructs of aeronautical English tests, as well as those involved in the development of other types of language assessments for professional purposes.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"400 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135950246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One method of detecting fake news is to use machine learning techniques; ideally, these tools should be ‘explainable’. The aim of this paper is to present a set of linguistic features indicative of fabrication of news, to perform a human analysis of these features, to determine the veracity messages by means of artificial intelligence – a machine learning tool, and to test whether a human researcher and the machine learning algorithm recognize fake news by paying attention to the same linguistic features of the messages.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128387248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main research material consists of self- study books – belonging to the genre of text that was produced for autonomous learning, including independent language work. Using a few selected German self-study books from the second half of the 19th century as examples, including authors such as: Franz Ahn (1851), Heinrich Gottfried Ollendorff (1873) and Plato von Reussner (1880), the main methodological guidelines were characterized, covering the forms of work recommended when learning a language without the help of a teacher. At the time, these studies were particularly popular. In the literature on the subject, little attention has been paid to this issue (e.g. Schramm 2008), even though teaching aids of this kind have been continuously developed and published since the 19th century. The topic under consideration is part of the research work devoted to glottodidactics from a diachronic perspective.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116267769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article is devoted to the ‘mediating communication’, which is part of the mediation activities defined in the companion volume to the CEFR. The first part of the article is devoted to theoretical considerations on the mediation and mediating communication in foreign language teaching, while the second part presents examples of specific exercises aimed at improving the competences in the mediating communication, which were identified as a result of the analysis of eighteen textbooks for French language teaching for secondary schools.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122489492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particular attention is devoted to the language constellations comprising Polish. After an introduction to the historical and sociological context of present-day Poland, characterized by the massive immigration of speakers of East Slavic languages, the text presents a succinct review of existing research and puts forward a few suggestions to fill knowledge gaps. It is argued that the large-scale acquisition of L2 Polish by speakers of related languages offers great opportunities for the scientific study of intercomprehension. The resulting insights in turn can be usefully applied to the development of efficient language teaching methods aiming to facilitate and accelerate the integration of Slavic-speaking refugees into Polish society.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129791297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is concerned with several strategies of vocabulary learning in this area, like beginning with German-Polish similarities (and internationalisms) and continuing concentrating on German-Polish differences, control works in the class room and a questionnaire for the students as well. The most of the science terms were learned on the basis of the parallelism in the German-Polish word-formation-structures and phrasal structures (anyway the German-Polish differences found during the seminar were also concerned with the word-formation-structures of the science terms vs. their phrasal status). By the end of the semester, the total percentage of the marks in the group was good. The most problems of the participants were connected with the German compounds and derivatives. During the last unit the students were to introduce a presentation prepared by themselves on the favourite parts of the material. All of them have performed in an enthusiastic mode.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126878951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a problem may arise if a specialist needs to provide specific information to a person who does not have expertise in the field and is not familiar with the terminology. Understanding such a message can be easier when images are used. How visual elements are employed in specialised communication is shown here on the example of communication on board of an aircraft. Different images are used by airlines to increase the passengers’ understanding of e.g. safety instructions, which can be crucial in emergency situations. Visual elements such as fastened seat belts, oxygen masks, emergency exits or life vests are depicted i.a. on the safety card. These images are less abstract and more universal than the corresponding written or spoken message and should, therefore, be understood by more people (regardless of their mother tongue and cultural background). The aim of this article is to draw attention to the role of safety cards, the main source of visual information on board, as an element of the communication process between the airline and the passenger. The results are presented to find out whether the images used in safety cards, really make the information provided easier to understand. Or is the statement that “one picture is worth more than a thousand words” not at all applicable on board of an aircraft?","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116020185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kiraly (2015), K. Klimkowski (2015), or G. Massey (2017). The work mode which seems to best support the development of translator competences through telecollaboration are team translation projects (cf. D. Kiraly & S. Hofmann 2016). However, Online Intercultural Exchanges (OIEs), which were initially introduced to develop foreign language learners’ intercultural communication competence, can also – when adequately geared towards that end – be implemented to foster other components of translator competence. This paper reports on research into what behavioural and cognitive components of the language and culture component of students’ translator competence can be identified for further development through the analysis of discourse moves in TS students’ online communication.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128455516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
