In the literature on the subject, little attention has been paid to this issue (e.g. Schramm 2008), even though teaching aids of this kind have been continuously developed and published since the 19th century. Abstract

This paper will present the results of a study devoted to the first attempts at language self-learning with the use of didactic texts designed for this purpose. The main research material consists of self- study books – belonging to the genre of text that was produced for autonomous learning, including independent language work.
