Foreign speakers’ mother tongue (L1) tends to affect the way certain structural misuses of English are detected and identified, such as word order inversion (e.g. Happened an accident), which also affects training and assessment practices either negatively or positively. In other words, depending on the context, global errors, i.e. structural mistakes that affect meaning, might be interpreted as merely local errors which do not usually interfere with meaning, when they actually do. On the other hand, bilingual instructors can anticipate some mistakes Brazilian students commonly make and try to prevent them from happening. Considering that there are also some instances of mistakes that are more of an accidental slip than an actual error, how can one tell the difference between errors and occasional slips of the tongue? How important is recognizing these differences when training and assessing students’ Aeronautical English proficiency? Based on current discussions on institutional and specialized translation (F. Prieto-Ramos/ D. Guzmán 2021, F. Prieto-Ramos/ G. Cerutti 2023), and theory-oriented and a translation-oriented terminological approaches (M. Thelen 2015), the threshold between normative and descriptive approaches was discussed, regarding institutional glossaries, specifically comprising the domain of Aeronautical Meteorology, by analyzing the design and guidelines of six glossaries, published by supranational, non-governmental, and government institutions, and universities and commercial companies. Deviations from standard phraseology are tolerated to a certain extent and are to be expected in non-routine situations where no exact phraseology has been defined. Some relational language is also accepted as helping smooth interactions. But any additional word increases the length of the speech signal and may make it more difficult for the recipient to identify the important words that need to be attended to, so the use of relational language can also have a detrimental effect. Clarity and lack of ambiguity are particularly necessary when the interlocutors do not share the same language background. This paper analyses the communications during an incident at Narita (Japan) where a native English-speaking pilot used unnecessary words that are not part of the expected phraseology to communicate an emergency, making it difficult for the Japanese ATC to extract the crucial words ‘vector back to Narita’ from the pilot’s transmission. Supported by a close linguistic study of the complete interaction in this incident and by interviews with aviation experts, the analysis employs the Community of Practice framework to investigate the series of misunderstandings. The article describes this perspective to Aviation English and illustrates how it is being used with undergraduate student pilots in the Aeronautical Science Program. Miscommunication episodes in aviation have historically caused accidents, incidents, and near misses and so need to be addressed in a way that encompasses aspects closely associated with language factors, such as technical, procedural, and cultural factors. Linguistic issues are the starting point and can be analyzed in a more thorough manner if considered along with underlying elements that account for a given communicative behavior. The following research topics fit into this proposal: Cross-cultural factors underlying air-ground communications between native and non-native speakers of English; miscommunication issues in the SBPA radiotelephony between the ATCO and foreign pilots and a taxonomy-based classification and analysis of aeronautical accidents considering language as a human factor in aviation. We conclude that a number of challenges can be overcome with improvements in pilot training regarding a wider perspective of aeronautical communication, and that can be done through research. Therefore, they must be trained in their use of aviation language. It seems, after research conducted in this context, that the training provided solely by SMEs does not suffice as they do not draw attention to proper articulation and pronunciation, nor drill grammar and vocabulary sufficiently. On the other hand, language instructors deliver on such issues on a regular basis, though, not being experts in aviation themselves, may leave out important elements of aeronautical communication. Hence, the only way to deliver the training is the collaborative development of both specialists. We suggest here one model of such cooperation. The generation of sample language and conceptual examples to place the use of this structured communication in the proper context, should be initiated by the SME. However, language instructors should be available to participate in such exercise building sessions to continuously keep the linguistic goal of the exercise in clear focus, as they would be best suited to that role. Using such a model to develop outcome-based language exercises embodies several advantages over developing study material produced by only one half of this suggested collaborative team. Despite the growing number of investigations about this topic in the Brazilian civil aviation context (A.L. Monteiro/ N. Bullock, 2020, A. Garcia 2015, P. Tosqui-Lucks/ M. Prado 2020, A. Pacheco 2019), fewer similar studies are found in the Brazilian military scenario (A.L.B.C. Silva, 2016, 2022, M. Bruno 2018). With this difference in mind, this study presents an overview of the instruments being used to assess Aeronautical English proficiency for civil and Air Force pilots in Brazil.This study followed a qualitative approach by means of a bibliographic review and documental analyses. Results of this study show that the same instruments are used to assess English language proficiency for all Air Force pilots in Brazil, despite their varying needs, whereas a different instrument – the Santos Dumont English Exam (SDEA) – is used for civil pilots. Similarities and differences in both assessment scenarios have been highlighted to better understand the theoretical constructs assessed in each test. As a contribution to the fields of Applied Linguistics and English for Specific Purposes (ESP), this study allows different stakeholders to have a clearer and better understanding of Aeronautical English assessment for pilots in Brazil. Based on the TEAP test, we will show an example of the test form and content in accordance with the ICAO recommendations. We will analyse all the components and talk about their functions. The TEAP test has been used in Ukraine since November 2007. The Test specifications were piloted on 1114 Ukrainian ATCOs during the years of 2007–2009. The TEAP has been authorised by Ukrainian Civil Aviation Authority as a test to be used in Ukraine for licensure purposes of both controllers and pilots. In this paper, the language construct is considered as a benchmark for all aspects of ICAO language proficiency requirements implementation through aviation personnel teaching and testing. According to the Dictionary of Language Testing (1999), a ‘construct’ is defined as an ability or sets of abilities that will be reflected in test performance, and about which inferences can be made on the basis of test scores. The Test practices will be presented on a large-scale format including examiners and raters’ functions which should be viewed as crucial factors to provide the best test qualities – validity, reliability and practicality. In a context of aviation language testing for licensing purposes, in which listening comprehension is central to aeronautical communications, test developers must guarantee that tests are valid, effective and reliable by complying with best practices. In this paper, the listening test of the Aeronautical English Proficiency Exam (EPLIS) for the Brazilian Airspace System will be appraised. In this talk I will discuss the problem of defining language specificity for professional purposes, the problem of reproducing authentic contexts in assessments, and the problem of the inseparability of language knowledge and professional background knowledge. In terms of specificity, I will talk about “Codes of Relevance,” which relate language use to specific professional contexts. The notion of authenticity is paramount since, unless pilot and ATC test takers can relate to the professional context in a realistic manner, then the judgments we make concerning their language abilities may not be valid.
