The results of this research provide evidence that Texas students have positive perceptions of their high school counselors regarding availability, confidentiality and trust, and guidance activities. While there are areas of needed improvement identified, the students indicated counselors are available to students and are most effective in building relationships based upon positive rapport.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130629435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Supervisors most needed information on clinical decision making, ethics, and crisis intervention. Preferred venues for continuing education included local workshops, the annual state counseling conference, webinars, and journal articles. Correlation was found between the importance placed on professional conference attendance and the belief that attending professional conferences is beneficial to supervisory work. Implications for future research and policy are presented.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"164 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121249758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three themes emerged including (a) support, (b) parallel process, and (c) gatekeeping. The results indicated 51.1% of participants perceived behaviors initially surface in entry-level skill courses. The top five student behaviors ranked by participants as needing remediation were (1) receptivity to feedback; (2) basic counseling skills; (3) boundaries with clients, supervisors, and/or colleagues; (4) openness to self-examination; and (5) advanced counseling skills. A factor analysis identified five factors based on the 34 student behaviors which can be remediated, accounting for 69.19% of the variance.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"115 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127418241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These dimensions included race, sex, disability, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and culture. Research methodology and historical trends were also considered. The analysis of 46 studies suggested that cultural identity has not been sufficiently explored in child counseling research and that there are significant gaps between theory and practice. More rigorous qualitative and quantitative research is needed to explore the process of change and outcome with culturally diverse children.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127236518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
