Through a practitioner research study, the authors examined how elementary school counselors were using data in order to create a professional development opportunity that was specific to their professional needs. Findings provide insight into the complexities associated with elementary school counselors’ data use as part of expected work responsibilities.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128707127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I conducted four prevention-based trainings in different venues that investigated how compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, burnout, self- efficacy, empathy, personal distress, self-awareness, and non-reactivity impacted Licensed Professional Counselor Interns compared to a self-study control group. There was a significant difference in levels of empathy and self-awareness in participants who completed the trainings in comparison to those in the control group, but no significant differences between groups on any of the other dependent variables. Implications for further research and training are discussed.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133839657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors focused on the role of ethnic identity and the relationship to problematic substance use with adolescent, Latino/a participants. We found no statistically significant effect between ethnic identity of adolescents who identify as Latino/a and their likelihood for self-reported substance/substance dependency behaviors. Hence, when addressing substance use among adolescents, identification with Latino cultural values may not be relevant in terms of addressing protective factors.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115278271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two potential predictors of empathy are religion and spirituality, although research findings in this area are mixed. The purpose of this study was to examine whether counseling students’ religious commitment and spirituality significantly predicted empathy. Results revealed that two spiritual elements, Purpose/meaning and Unifying Interconnectedness, as well as gender and age, significantly predicted empathy among 146 graduate-level counseling students.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129999830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fifty participants responded to an online survey consisting of Likert-type items and free-response questions. Rural supervisors commented on their connectedness to their communities and profession, resources, multiple roles, boundaries and dual relationships, self-care, and personal factors. Supervisors felt disconnected from their profession and unsupported in supervisory roles but reported low burn-out rates. They reported perceived areas for additional training and suggestions for counselor education programs. Other findings paralleled earlier research regarding rural mental health professionals.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116431493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
