The study examined various sub-problems, encompassing the pretest and post-test performances of both the control and experimental groups and the notable disparities observed between these performances. Furthermore, the study investigated the noteworthy gap in both groups' pretest and posttest performances. The study utilized a quasi-experimental methodology, incorporating rubrics to assess and evaluate the participants' performances. The research consisted of a sample size of fifty (50) students who were registered in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. The participants were divided into two distinct categories: the control group and the experimental group. The assessment tool utilized for the pretest and posttest evaluations was the minimal pair pronunciation instrument. The findings suggest that many students in both subject groups exhibited moderate performance levels during the pretest. Both groups improved their performance, as indicated by the scores obtained in the post-assessment. A notable disparity is observed in the post-test outcomes between the control and experimental groups. A significant difference is evident in the pretest and posttest performance of the control and experimental groups. The subject that employed rigorous minimal pairs discussions as a pedagogical strategy in their oral English courses enhanced their overall performance. The study's outcomes underscore the potential effectiveness of incorporating minimal pair bingo as a valuable enhancement to oral English instruction for Japanese learners. By leveraging minimal pairs, educators can provide a concise method for explaining distinctions between similar English sounds, enabling learners to focus on specific sound refinements.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"21 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82717572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the advent of digital media, communication and experience sharing have changed. A wedding speech is an intriguing example of this genre, where the speaker naturally expresses gratitude to the newlyweds and guests while reliving family history. By recognizing important linguistic elements, the audience can better understand the interpersonal ties presented. The present study aimed to explore the interpersonal language and investigate the significant linguistic features of social media speech through a spoken analysis of YouTube videos. Approximately 2.5 hours (and 13,707 words) worth of real audio-visual recordings of wedding speeches were gathered and transcribed. The theoretical foundation for this study is strengthened by systemic functional linguistics (SFL). The findings and discussions section provides a comprehensive review of interpersonal language as it relates to appraisal theory, for example, the context variables of genre and register and lexico-grammatical features. These findings were investigated to comprehend the underlying interpersonal meanings in various language strata domains. The present study advances our knowledge of how language shapes speakers' communicative behavior in wedding discourse and provides insight into this novel media text form.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81036505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The initial survey shows that students still face problems or difficulties in learning English, especially productive skills. So, the study aimed to investigate the kinds of instructional design models (IDM) conducted by lecturers, to expose the stages of IDM, and to describe the learning achievement of the students’ English productive skills. The subjects of this study were lecturers who taught English productive skills, namely speaking and writing skills, and the fourth semester students who had programed these courses. The procedures were (1) a preliminary survey of learning problems, (2) designing research instruments, (3) validating instruments, (4) collecting data through instruments, and (5) analyzing and interpreting the results of data analysis. The instrument was a questionnaire that aimed to obtain information from lecturers, while the test aimed to measure the achievement of students’ English productive skills. The results showed that the lecturers used several kinds of IDM with various stages, and the students’ English achievement was in good classification for speaking skills and fair for writing skills. Therefore, the lecturers were considerably required to choose the kinds and various stages of IDM in their teaching and learning processes.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83992222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Neufeld. The study addresses the following research questions: 1) What are the types of category shifts used by Arab translators to translate scientific texts into Arabic, and 2) To what extent do the translations convey the intended meaning of the source texts and bridge the linguistic gap between the two languages (English and Arabic). The research draws on Catford's (1965) classification of category shifts. It adopted a qualitative approach in analyzing each instance of shifts that corresponds to a particular type of category shifts. The findings of the study revealed that four types of category shifts were used by Arab translators to translate the scientific texts from English into Arabic. It was also found that the use of these shifts was governed by the huge linguistic gap between the two languages. The results of this research should contribute to the growing body of literature that recognizes the importance of specialized translation. In fact, so far, very little attention has been paid to the utilization of shifts in Scientific texts. Therefore, this study makes a major contribution to research on shift in translation by unveiling the linguistic problem that arise during the translation of scientific texts and their impact on the translators' choices, especially in Arabic context.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135308064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Chinese film Farewell My Concubine has been well-received in China as well as in other parts of the world and marked a milestone in Chinese film history. Its subtitle is rich in Chinese culture-loaded words, which may pose difficulties for both the translator to translate and for the oversea audience to understand. To explore the reasons for the warm reception of the subtitle translation of Farewell My Concubine among international audiences, this paper takes a relevance-theoretic approach to analyze the translation of culture-loaded expressions in the film, including mainly three types: Beijing Opera jargon, the Beijing dialect, and Chinese idioms. Through a detailed case study, this paper finds that the translator flexibly uses different translation strategies, such as domestication and foreignization, for different texts and contexts to cater to the audience’s cognitive environment. Meanwhile, the translator also takes into account the features of subtitles, which are often limited by time and space, and accordingly makes reasonable omissions of the translated texts. From the perspective of relevance theory, the translator realizes optimal relevance and delivers the subtitle information accurately to the target audience. This paper also proves that relevance theory, as a cognitive pragmatic approach to communication, is a useful tool for translation studies.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"94 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87196012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The synchronic research reveals that interpersonal metaphors of modulation are mode-sensitive to written texts. Regarding genre distribution, metaphorical obligations driven by the explicit orientation dominate fiction texts. In contrast, the objective orientation drives obligations to be more prevalent in academic texts or more technical genres. The objective orientation of metaphorical inclinations is notably prevalent in newspapers and magazines other than academic texts. Besides, the findings highlight that the inherent personal and subjective characteristics of interpersonal modulations remain unchanged in their metaphorical forms, demonstrating less objectivity compared to ideational metaphors in highly technical disciplines.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84985938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

AVT is quite a unique sub-discipline of Translation Studies (TS) due to its polysemiotic nature in which it functions on verbal, acoustic and visual levels. Within this rationale, the study conducts an interrogation of the verbal auditory or acoustic channel, the non-verbal auditory channel, the verbal visual channel, e.g. written signs on the screen and the non-verbal visual channel. As such, the aim of the study is to scrutinize the constraints and challenges that the AVT translators face during the subtitling process within the paradigm of translation strategies. The present study is carried out within the boundaries of the target-oriented approach developed by Gideon Toury and the foreignization/domestication approaches developed by Lawrence Venuti to interrogate culture-bound characteristics. Foreignization as a translation strategy seems principally appropriate for a historical and cultural text to recreate the source text in target language in such a way that the reader or the audience would feel the cultural effect of the source text. The contribution of the research is hopefully twofold. One, it is the first-ever study of Yahay and Kunooz Series in the academia; the other, this study incites further studies in the future to develop a comprehensive and sound-based theoretical frame for AVT.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"79 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78824886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because, the translators needed to be analyzed allusions according to the ıts type and the categorization to which they belong. The present study aimed to identify the allusions, in particular PNs and KPs, based on Leppihalme’s (1997) classification model in animated movies. It tried to investigate Iranian translators’ strategies for subtitling and dubbing the allusions in four animated movies including Mr. Peabody and Sherman (2014), Shrek 2 (2004), Rio (2011), and The Simpsons (2007) based on Leppihalme’s (1997) model and to determine the differences between the strategies used in the dubbing and subtitling of the allusions. For this purpose, the researcher adopted a quantitative method with a comparative descriptive approach. Then, the mentioned animated movies were examined to collect and classify allusive elements. After analysis, the results showed that there were found 60 allusions including 30 KP and 30 PN based on Leppihalme’s (1997) taxonomy. As well as, the findings of strategies analysis related to subtitling indicated that the Retention Name and Literal Translation were the first and second most frequent strategies with 38.3% and 36.7% respectively. While Omission was the least frequent strategy with 3.3%. Furthermore, the findings of strategies analysis related to dubbing illustrated that the Omission name was the first and most frequent with 21.7% while Recreation was the least frequent strategy with 1.7%. The findings of this study can provide a pedagogical implication for translation students so that they can recognize the translations of allusions with subtitling and dubbing strategies and can be utilized as a guideline for fans in the subtitling and dubbing industry.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82606947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The American granddaughter is not only about war trauma, memories, atrocities, and the huge loss caused by an endless and unjust war waged against a sovereign country. It is about, as the paper argues, a disoriented homecoming and the scattered identity of Zeina, the protagonist, who appears to be a dissociative personality. This paper also explores how the protagonist’s dual identity crisis is of a unique type as it is being questioned through three stages. Exile and the coming back on an American military truck as a translator for the invaders’ army attacking her origin homeland and finally returning to the United States only to find herself unfit for both homes.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73907549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And here, I am referring to the use of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)/ Moroccan dialect (Darija), Amazigh, or French in the Moroccan English classroom. To understand the complexity of this inter-lingual aspect, this paper aims at verifying the impact of using translation on the learning process of bilingual/ multilingual learners of English. It espouses the contention that the use of the existing linguistic repertoire is cognitively and practically unavoidable, especially in a mobile digital era. For assessing the credibility of this claim, a mixed methods approach is chosen to weigh out the adoption or rejection of using translation in foreign language learning and teaching. 52 middle and high school teachers were randomly selected to investigate the amount of translation used to teach English in their classes, and how it affects the students’ acquisition of this language. Through classroom observations, unstructured interviews, and a questionnaire, the data were collected to measure the consistence of an inter-language phenomenon that has kept haunting EFL/ESL theoreticians and practitioners alike. The findings show that more than half of the instructors favor the moderate use of translation in their teaching. By taking into consideration the learning experience of the teacher, the age of the learners, and the motivation factors that correspond with the rising of the mobile and communication technologies available, the need to use translation is seen as inescapable. Hence, it is calling for a judicious adoption that would prioritize the fulfillment of communicative, cross-linguistic, and cross-cultural competencies in foreign language learning.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"69 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73864817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
