However, most studies that have evaluated the performance of NLP models in translation tasks have focused on general-purpose text, leaving the evaluation of their effectiveness in handling specialized text to be relatively unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of GPT-3 in translating specialized Arabic text to English and compare its performance to human translation. To achieve this goal, the study selected ten chapters from a specialized book written in Arabic, covering topics in specialized religious context. The chapters were translated by a professional human translator and by GPT-3 using its translation Application Programming Interface. The translation performance of GPT-3 to was compared to human translation using qualitative measures, specifically the Direct Assessment method. Additionally, the translations were evaluated using two different evaluation metrics, Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) score and Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation (ROUGE) metric, which measure the similarity between the translated text and the reference text.The qualitative results show that GPT produced generally understandable translations but failed to capture nuances and cultural context. On the other hand, the quantitative results of the study showed that GPT-3 was able to achieve a relatively high level of accuracy in translating specialized religious text, with comparable scores to human translations in some cases. Specifically, the BERT score of GPT-3 translations was 0.83. The study also found that the Rouge score failed to fully reflect the capabilities of GPT-3 in translating specialized text.Overall, the findings of this study suggest that GPT-3 has promising potential as a translation tool for specialized religious text, but further research is needed to improve its capabilities and address its limitations.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"76 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88397304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It deals with a change of viewpoint, including a change of perspective and a change of category of thought, which is categorized as a semantic shift under one of the translation procedures, namely modulation. The change occurs due to some factors, and one of them is the different cultural backgrounds between the author and the translator. Upacara is taken as the data source together with its translation Ceremony in English due to the fact that the novel involves the use of specific terms or expressions or words used in the preparation and the process of proceeding a ceremony in the life of Dayak tribes and these lead to the semantic shifts in the English target text. The cases of modulation found in the target text are significant. Using the descriptive qualitative method, the objectives of this research are to identify the types of modulation identified in the target text and the kinds of words which are being semantically shifted or modulated. The results show that the modulation found is not all of the types of free modulation, and the words which are modulated do not necessarily deal with the cultural words. There are some words or expressions which are semantically shifted out of all types of modulation. In the translation of the Indonesian novel Upacara into English Ceremony, the semantic shift under the modulation translation procedure covers both cultural and non-cultural words.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"19 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80322732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At Dong Nai Technology University, e-learning systems, including DNTU-LMS and Canvas, have recently been introduced. They have been employed as essential instruments for teaching and learning at several university faculties, notably during the Covid-19 epidemic, because of their flexibility and efficiency. The purpose of the current research was to ascertain the opinions of EFL students from the Faculty of Foreign Languages on the use of an e-learning platform. To take part in this research, 100 EFL students were randomly selected. A questionnaire was used to obtain the data. The findings showed that the implementation of e-learning was successful after assessing student reactions. Students are comforted and happy by e-learning, which also encourages them to study English.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"99 2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86551118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Descriptive and inferential analyses of the collected data revealed expected—that the components of the L2MSS were a good predictor of the learners’ intended learning efforts. However, the study also established that in this learner population, these components were not consistently correlated with L2 achievement. The findings can be treated as evidence that self-reported motivation does not always have behavioral consequences.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87588055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The idea behind this paper is that power relations, albeit lopsided, are not absolute in this novel but fluid. Not to mention that it is not unilateral as commonly thought of but--multilateral. Indeed, the setting of this Moorish novel is informed by religious and cultural tensions and the Spanish Inquisition in the Crescent and Christendom relation of power. It talks about an era prior to the epistemic and physical aggression on Moorish culture in 1492 and the failure of the Moor-Spaniard capitulación and convivencia. But since power and resistance figure immensely in this text, the analysis problematizes that relationship following the approach of the Foucauldian post-modern, positive conception of power. The object of analysis is treated as fiction, and the underlying methods are content analysis. The thesis concludes that power is fractured from within by other discourses. Besides, the problem of power and resistance is part of what is called centripetal and centrifugal dynamics: Power oscillates between two contending blocs and is, therefore, never static; these are a potion, a cocktail mix.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"92 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75732990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It seeks to find out the similarities and differences in the conceptualization of metaphors of WATER in the two languages; then suggest some implications for the teaching and learning process. In the study, descriptive, quantitative, qualitative approaches and a contrastive analysis are employed. 150 English and 150 Vietnamese samples are taken from a corpus of English and Vietnamese poems from the 19th and 20th centuries. The results show that ten conceptual metaphors of WATER in both English and Vietnamese are discovered within the scope of the study. Both English and Vietnamese poets make use of three types of poetic reworking of conventional metaphors, namely extending, elaboration, and combining. Since the meaning of a metaphor is influenced by culture and personal experiences, the concepts in the metaphors might differ significantly across Vietnamese and English cultures.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89779468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected from 200 questionnaires, and the analysis of the in-depth interviews was conducted with 10 student informants and observations of 30 students in total. The findings showed that most students were familiar with English presentation skills. Also, they were aware of the importance of presentation skills and agreed on the necessity for a successful presentation. Knowledge was what caused participants the most difficulties during the preparation stage, and when presenting, students struggled the most not to replicate the textbook word-by-word. To solve these problems, several solutions were discussed in the study.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"112 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73384801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Synchronous online communication can be viewed as a novel medium that combines spoken, written and electronic properties. There may be a direct causal link between the lack of coherence in synchronous online communication and its propensity for language play that leads to the conversational analysis of synchronous online communication, which is associated with a reduction of coherence, disruption of turn adjacency and phantom turn adjacency. In synchronous online communication, there is a difficulty in interpreting messages in their sequential context that arises from the fact that turn sequencing is partly user-controlled and partly system-controlled. This leads to disrupted turn-taking and adjacency pairs as other stands of conversation get inserted between their parts.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"122 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89874390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, it aims to create a proposed training program with the aforementioned objectives. Results surface that teachers lacked training in online teaching at the onset of the pandemic, but they managed to find their teaching strategies as the years went by. Some factors inevitably hindered the conduct of online classes, such as connectivity issues and dysfunctional gadgets for teachers and students. This study gathered data through individual interviews, small group discussions, and document analysis. The triangulated data helped the researcher create an enhanced curriculum guide to help the teachers enhance their competency level in teaching Oral Communication during online classes.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77309719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It investigates the signs that Sampson's characters convey. It aims to show the messages that the concerned data have. The data is limited to 4 characters that are selected from the concerned series. Barth (1977)'s model is adopted in analyzing the concerned data. It is hypothesized that the concerned characters are full of messages that are used as tools to deal with certain cases in American society. To achieve its aim and verify its hypothesis, the study adopts the following steps: 1. Re-visiting concepts of semiotics and sitcom. 2. Presenting the basic elements of the sign system. 3. Following Barth (1977)'s model in analyzing the concerned data. 4. The main points are concluded.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":"59 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73461839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
