It explores the relationship between linguistic structures in proverbs by critically examining the processes, participants, and circumstantials as used by Achebe in his work. The analysis reveals that Achebe uses more material processes, followed by relational, and then verbal, behavioural, and mental. Achebe mostly uses actors, goals, carriers, attributes, identified, identifier, sayer, verbiage, and behaver to convey the message of his novel and the behaviours of the characters he used in his book. He mostly uses circumstances of location and manner to show that actions of the novel take place in a certain place, time, and manner. The study is anchored on Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar Transitivity. The types of transitivity systems utilized by the writer contribute to the construction of themes reflected in the novel. The paper concludes that Achebe's use of varieties of processes, participants, and circumstances has made his novel interesting and readable. As a result, objective interpretations of texts can be reached by conducting transitivity analyses.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78630946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies have indicated potential associations between corpus stylistics and cognitive stylistics, but investigations of The Time Machine have not dealt with the “strange white flowers” in much detail, especially observing from a corpus perspective and interpreting from the cognitive one. The principal objective of this study is to explore the atmospheric effects of these flowers with a combined corpus and cognitive methodological approach. Corpus techniques rely on the tools of Sketch Engine and CQPweb, while cognitive methods lie in the theories of Atmosphere and the Text World. The results showed that “strange white flowers” at the macro-level create elusive and diffusive atmospheric effects of transiency and strangeness, which could be represented at the meso-level by the text-world presentation and explored at the micro-level by collocation and colligation. The findings can contribute to a better understanding of peripheral objects in The Time Machine and add new insight into the study of science.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75959921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study is divided into two sections. In the first section, the character of Tony is analyzed using Freud's theory of psychoanalysis, focusing on the id, ego, and superego and how Tony’s id has prevailed over his superego in most of the actions in the first part of the novel. It presents a big store of aggression and conflicting ideas. Some examples are provided in evidence of how the ego tries to solve the conflict between the id and the superego and supports the superego over the id. The second section of the study interprets some psychological core issues developed and manifested in the life of Tony, such as fear of abandonment, fear of betrayal, insecure or unstable sense of self, and low self-esteem. Throughout the analysis, the objective is to shed light on the character’s psyche in order to interpret his personality and self-destructive behavior using Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86148632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study mainly explores the translation and idiomacity of some colour-related expressions of comparison (i.e. similes), collocations and binomials. The paper examines whether it is possible to observe any consistency in the strategies used for the translation of these colour-related idiomatic expressions. This is attempted under the notions of foreignization and domestication proposed by Venuti (1995), the framework of Berlin/Key studies on colours (1969), and the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which are all concerned with the interrelationships between language, culture, and translation. The researcher is the instrument of this study. In translating the culturally-bound expressions, the researcher uses two techniques to solve the cultural gap between the source and target languages. The paper reaches the conclusion that no translation strategy should be discarded. Venuti claims that the translator's invisibility is a direct fallout of domesticating translation. However, domestication is very successful in translating many of the idioms incorporated in the corpus data by providing an equivalent idiom in the target language (TL). Foreignising translation, on the other hand, is not always favoured as a form of cultural innovation if it is taken to extremes, as is the case with colour-related idioms deeply bound to culture as it negatively affects the semantic content of the source language.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86844474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many Filipino graduates have difficulties finding a job because of poor oral literacy. This study determined the effectiveness of the choral reading strategy in improving students’ oral literacy in Grade 11 English, Lusaran National High School, Cebu City, S. Y. 2019-2020. The study used a quasi-experimental method, utilizing rubrics to identify and determine the research subjects' performances. Findings showed that most of the students in the two groups of subjects showed a fair performance in the pretest. The two groups of subjects showed an increase in performance based on the scores earned in the posttest. There is a significant difference in the posttest performances of the control and experimental groups. There is a significant difference between the pretest and posttest performances of the control and experimental groups. The group which had choral reading for improving oral literacy in the English classroom showed a high increase in performance. Choral reading is an effective strategy for improving oral literacy as it develops the students’ oral literacy in terms of volume and expression.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80582327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper explored the rhetorical strategies that are significant in the language choices of Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy. The task of persuading and convincing a congregation with the power of words to positively influence their beliefs and attitudes is not an easy one. In order to unravel the mystery behind the selected preacher’s success, two sermons were purposively selected from the preacher’s numerous sermons. These electronically recorded sermons were transcribed into written form, vertically represented in numbered lines for ease of reference; The study anchored on Aristotle’s “Theory of Rhetoric” because of the assumptions of what constitutes an effective speech (sermon) presentation; since sermon is a kind of speech event. The paper, therefore, discovered that the preacher is conscious of the impact of careful language choice in an effort to achieve effective preaching as well as influence and affect his congregation.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78590436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, projects and curricula for computer learning have been developed in both primary and secondary schools. In this context, this theoretically-empirical research combines the reality of the use of ICT tools in English language classes in elementary and secondary schools with segments defined in the English language curriculum. With the empirical, descriptive, and conclusive results gained in this research, where 108 English language teachers in the primary and secondary schools of Skopje, Gostivar, and Tetovo were surveyed, a statistical difference (sig = 0.028) was observed in teacher attitudes per city in terms of level and the impact of ICT tools on the productivity of students in English language classes as well as the statistical difference (sig = 0.043) in teachers' attitudes by their age. In the end, the hierarchy of ICT tools was determined according to their level of use and the hierarchy of skills developed by the use of ICT tools in English language classes in elementary and secondary schools.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73227832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article aims to examine response strategies to apology that are used in English romance and family films and find out the lexico-grammatical realizations of response utterances in English conversations. This article was qualitatively designed with the support of the researchers’ observation of the films' scripts extracted from English films, subsequently the researchers’ description of the data collection into separate categories. The results of this study revealed that English film characters were more likely to accept than reject apologies. Direct positive comments were favoured by the English, with indirect positive responses coming in second.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84720039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Similarly, it is no news that it has contributed immensely to the economies of nations and revolutionized the means and methods of studying. However, the information of interest and concern now is how it has contributed to the dwindling reading culture among students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This topic was studied through oral interviews and personal interaction to know how students' reading habits have declined tremendously as a result of the advent of ICT using selected Kogi State University students as a case study. It is discovered through our informants that much time is given by the students to surfing the internet for both relevant and mostly irrelevant materials to their academic progress at the expense of reading natural materials such as textbooks and notebooks. This practice has depleted their natural mental ability and reduced their capacity to read comprehensively and effectively with consequent mass failure in both their internal and external examinations. The data collected were analyzed using the simple descriptive statistical tool to compute and summarize the findings. It was discovered that the advent of ICT has in no small way depleted their natural mental ability to read comprehensively and effectively. This paper is of the opinion that students need to put their internet use under control, appreciate the fact that all life is not yet online and see the internet for now as only a means to an end. This paper concludes with the view that lecturers need to sensitize the students on the importance of reading to their intellectual and moral development so that reading can start to take its rightful position alongside ICT.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84815864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, the shortcomings in wording and phrasing, usage of translation strategies and intercultural communication in these China English texts are not only contrary to the Plain English Movement which advocated a more concise and economical use of words and sentences in the late 20th century, but also adversely affect the Belt and Road Initiative as well as intercultural communication. In this paper, various promotional material collected from major maritime-related English exhibitions in China over the past three years will be taken as examples. This paper will adopt the discourse analysis theory to summarize the problems of redundancy, Chinglish, misuse of translation strategies and mismanagement of intercultural conflict in relevant bilingual advertisements. The paper then suggests a series of ways for improvement in order to improve the quality of China English texts as well as promote intercultural communication.","PeriodicalId":53294,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73597027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
