I shall claim that Shalev, as opposed to canonical Israeli writers such as Amoz Oz, A. B. Yehoshua and David Grossman, does not establish herself as the “watchman for the house of Israel”. Contournant les interdictions du regime tsariste, il va a la rencontre d’un nouveau lectorat, populaire et ouvrier, auquel il s’adresse dans une langue et un style qui lui sont comprehensibles. Sous le couvert de commentaires religieux, la revue permet a ses trois fondateurs, les ecrivains Yitskhok Leybush Peretz (1853-1915), Mordkhe Spektor (1858-1925) et Dovid Pinski (1872-1959), de promouvoir de nouvelles idees d’ordre social et culturel a la fois. C’est surtout Peretz qui donna a la revue sa richesse et determina sa nature polyvalente. Kutti in A Journey into Winter is a stammerer and Bruno in And the Rage Is Not Yet Over is an amputee–one-handed man. The two novellas are written as monologues of their protagonists. Both of them begin with the same pattern as the protagonist introduces himself by stating his name and disability. The disability is an integral part and a major component of their identity.Although the plots of the two novellas differ from each other, there is a significant paradigmatic similarity between the novellas. In both of them the disabilities and their implications are represented not in a realistic way but in lyrical one. They function as a metaphor through which Appelfeld examines the core and essence of the Jewish protagonists of the novellas.This metaphor has a paradigmatic function. According to the paradigm, every Jew in the Diaspora has a kind of disability. This disability causes many problems and difficulties, but at the same time it is a virtue, an advantage. It makes the Jews special and unique, different from other people. It makes them think differently, have different morality and commitments. C’est dans la nature et ses elements multiples qu’Aharon Appelfeld puise les langages qui lui permettent de forger une symbolique ou la polysemie n’a d’egal que les variations musicales de la langue hebraique. Tour a tour, l’eau, la foret, la steppe glacee ou la brulure du soleil, la flore protectrice ou nocive ainsi que la faune domestique ou sauvage deviennent des moyens d’expression, de veritables langages ou affleurent sensations, souvenirs et etats d’âme. It was a sudden decision, in fact not a decision but an impulsive urge. The journey turns into a pilgrimage of atonement. Jacob, who in his youth made a great effort in order to move away from his parents and their world, to detach himself from the Jewish past and his roots, feels his life hollow. In the journey he becomes acquainted with his parents’ life before the war, with their world, habits, beliefs, and their green and wild environment. The nature there, so different from Tel-Aviv, enchants him. His parents and ancestors, who were in his eyes wretched and miserable, become worthy, full, interesting, and dignified. The world of his parents fills the hollowness of his life and his self. The self which, as he comes to understand in the village, is incomplete and blemished without the past. Des silences est plus exact, car selon la parole qui les fait resonner, ils offrent des tessitures multiples : silence heureux d’une mere contemplative, silence recueilli des hommes en priere, murmure interieur de l’enfant solitaire, gorge fermee de l’enfant traque, cinema muet des scenes d’horreur, secret de la judaite, aphasie du survivant ou encore epaisseur d’un silence floconneux que traverse le mot allemand pour revenir a la surface et faire surgir la memoire.Entre non-langage, langues a taire, langue a apprendre, langue a desapprendre, l’ecriture nue d’Aharon Appelfeld se fraie une âpre voie. Je pense a l’ecrivain Shammai Golan, auteur de romans plus ou moins autobiographiques, ne en 1933, a Israel Levin, membre du kibboutz Yagour et militaire, heros d’un roman biographique de Roni Sarig qui vient de paraitre. Si pour les adultes les temoignages doivent etre factuels, fideles et chronologiques, pour les enfants, que l’on a refuse de considerer comme des temoins, faute de pouvoir reconstituer le passe par la memoire, il s’agit de recourir a l’invention, a l’expression des sensations et des sentiments, en d’autres mots a la perception, pour proceder a une « reconstruction ». Ce recours singulier a l’imaginaire et aux sens serait, selon Appelfeld, a l’origine de la naissance de la litterature de la Shoah.Notre questionnement aura pour sujet la definition du « temoignage » et sa place dans la litterature.« Les enfants survivants ne sauraient se rememorer l’Holocauste a la maniere des adultes. Leur contribution est inseparable de leur experience vecue. Mais cette experience, quoique limitee, est profonde.
