This study evaluates post-harvest losses among fish farmers and investigates the underlying factors contributing to these losses through a survey of 450 fish farmers and 150 traders. Descriptive analyses reveal notable disparities, with Netrokona district experiencing 34 % physical losses, while Kishoreganj and Sunamgang districts contend with market force losses of 50 % and 40 %, respectively. Insights from <em>Bepari</em> (small-scale traders), <em>Paikar</em> (rural and urban retailers), and general retailers highlight distinct concerns, including a reported 41 % market loss among <em>Bepari</em>, 38 % quality loss emphasized by <em>Paikar</em>, and 40 % market and 30 % quality losses faced by retailers. Farmers attribute these losses to factors such as elevated temperatures and destructive fishing practices, while market participants identify challenges like inadequate storage and transportation delays. A multiple regression analysis reveals critical influencing factors, indicating that age, education, training, and improved transportation positively affect post-harvest outcomes, while selling in secondary and tertiary markets also enhances results. Interestingly, greater labor availability correlates with increased post-harvest losses, potentially due to handling inefficiencies or lack of coordination among workers. This study underscores the necessity for policymakers to devise targeted strategies that address the unique challenges of the haor region, thereby reinforcing Bangladesh's position in global fish production and ensuring the economic sustainability of its farmers and traders.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48427,"journal":{"name":"Marine Policy","volume":"176 ","pages":"Article 106638"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143464319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chondrichthyes may be considered under both descriptors. This study presents detailed insights into how the 22 coastal EU Member States (MS) have considered these species under the MSFD and provides recommendations to address gaps and further management and conservation efforts for these species. The review of national and EU-level reports showed a varied integration and consideration of Chondrichthyes in national efforts to reach GES and fulfil obligations in relation to the conservation and management of these species under the MSFD. Across the 168 chondrichthyan species occurring in EU marine waters, 61 have been integrated under either or both descriptors and only 39 species were assessed for GES across the EU, with both positive and negative outcomes. However, the reliance of EU MS on existing programmes for monitoring does hinder effective data collection for Chondrichthyes, leaving substantial data gaps regarding the assessment of species status, habitat conditions, ecology, and distribution. These gaps are furthered by a fragmented approach that could be addressed through better regional cooperation and collaboration, as required by the Directive.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48427,"journal":{"name":"Marine Policy","volume":"176 ","pages":"Article 106637"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143464320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective was to describe the obstacles for good governance within the coastal SES of Campeche, through the perception and experience of expert users, including academics, government agents, and representatives of civil society organizations (n = 32). Most key users are linked to community organizations (n = 20), and their work has been decisive for management and conservation activities. However, there is still needed to integrate academic research to local issues and facilitate experiences exchange. Community-based mangrove restoration projects in the three SES have been an example of nature-based solutions with optimal results of collaboration between sectors (n = 23). It is recognized that management is insufficient due to the lack of precision in management plans (n = 13) and the common nature of resources (n = 13). To advance on the path to good governance for the SES regions we proposed the inclusion of the local context (n = 17), the participation of all actors (n = 16), and support for community initiatives (n = 13). It has been identified that the socio-environmental challenges faced by community initiatives are mainly related to the type of governance system (n = 20) and users (n = 20). Therefore, greater inter-institutional collaboration is required to strengthen capacities for social dimensions of coastal SES.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48427,"journal":{"name":"Marine Policy","volume":"176 ","pages":"Article 106634"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143454152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We defined the term ‘marine fisheries conservation area’ and created an inventory of areas that restrict fishing activities, most of which were established by the U.S. Fishery Management Councils under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA). We identified 648 areas which currently cover 72 % of the total U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). 531 areas, representing 56 % of the EEZ, were classified as Ecosystem Conservation Areas that directly provide in situ conservation of biodiversity. Bottom trawling is prohibited year-round in 56 % of the EEZ, and all bottom tending gear is prohibited year-round in 37 %. Other fishing gears are prohibited in 60 % of the EEZ year-round. Thus, a majority of the U.S. EEZ is conserved from the most environmentally adverse fishing activities. These focused geographic areas complement other management tools used to ensure sustainable fisheries and ecosystems, such as catch and bycatch limits and limitations on legal gears, which are often deployed at regional scales. Collectively, these measures meet objectives and MSA National Standards and promote the maintenance of biological productivity and biodiversity, while balancing ecosystem function with services that benefit our nation, such as access to nature through recreational opportunities and healthy, sustainable seafood for consumers. The strength of fisheries management in the U.S. is the ability to balance the diverse needs of the nation with the need for a healthy marine ecosystem.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48427,"journal":{"name":"Marine Policy","volume":"175 ","pages":"Article 106633"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-02-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143436596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are the largest target group in global commercial fisheries, accounting for 30 % of the total catch. However, their population status and spatial distribution are highly susceptible to environmental changes and economic development. This study is based on fishing data for 11 small pelagic fisheries in a long-term time series from 1963 to 2021. By integrating various machine learning methods and generalized additive models, we quantitatively assess the impacts and differences of typical climate change events (ENSO and AMO) as well as economic development on the catches of different small pelagic fisheries. Our findings reveal the complex nonlinear and asymmetrical effects of ENSO, AMO, and economic development on the catches, with varying degrees of influence. Economic factors predominantly drive changes in the exploitation of small pelagic fisheries. ENSO, AMO, and their lagged effects significantly influence regional fisheries through teleconnections, with ENSO exerting a particularly pronounced impact on the southeastern Pacific area. While most species are adversely affected by the positive phases of climate change, extreme negative phases do not always benefit. This research provides a systematic understanding of the impacts of climate change and economic expansion on small pelagic fisheries, offering valuable insights for government policymakers and stakeholders to formulate scientific fishing strategies and mitigate the risks of fishery resource depletion.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48427,"journal":{"name":"Marine Policy","volume":"175 ","pages":"Article 106631"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143420680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Examining prices from the first-hand sale, wholesale, and retail markets using an asymmetric multivariate GARCH model reveals the retail market exhibits the lowest volatility. Therefore, only a small portion of the volatility from the first-hand sale and wholesale markets is transferred to consumers. Additionally, asymmetries are identified in the transmission of price volatility along the fresh sardine value chain. These suggest that information is not instantaneously transmitted along the supply chain, indicating imperfect market efficiency. Additionally, the wholesale market seems to exert market power, leading to less transparent price formation and potential anti-competitive practices. To reduce price volatility, several policy recommendations can be considered. These include promoting profitable sardine aquaculture to stabilise supply despite technological challenges and implementing sustainable fisheries management practices with improved regulation and more transparent individual transferable quota systems, particularly in the Gulf of Cádiz. Greater market transparency through improved traceability and a simplified supply chain may lead to a more competitive market, reducing volatility in first-hand sales. This volatility fuels the competitive race to exhaust quotas rapidly, resulting in lower prices and reduced fishers’ income. Lastly, it is crucial to consider how external factors, such as online sales platforms, climate change, and recruitment variability in small pelagic species, affect fish landings. Identifying the causes and transmission mechanisms of price volatility can support targeted management and transparency interventions to stabilise revenues and ensure fair competition, benefiting both consumers and fishers.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48427,"journal":{"name":"Marine Policy","volume":"175 ","pages":"Article 106627"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-02-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143420682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the “Theory-method-application\" approach and a global review of ocean economy and its trade statistics accounting theory, this paper reclassifies the products in the international trade classification code that meet the screening criteria, proposes an accounting method of trade statistics including ocean trade in goods and services, and applies the method to the measurement of global trade in ocean goods and services from 2005 to 2021. The results show that global ocean trade has grown substantially from $5.85 trillion to $11.20 trillion during this period, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.14 %. They are a key agent in the fight against climate change due to their capacity as a natural carbon sink, they protect beaches and coasts from erosion, oxygenate and increase the clarity of the waters, host a great biodiversity of species and are the natural setting for new tourist practices, which support and diversify the economy of coastal areas. However, despite these important benefits this marine green infrastructure has undergone a notable transformation in recent decades brought about by urban, tourist, industrial, and agricultural development along the Mediterranean coast. As a result, it faces increasingly greater anthropogenic pressures. The aim of this article is to analyze the existing bibliography of articles collected in the Journal Citation Report, and to understand current research trends related to the marine habitat of <em>Posidonia oceanica</em> meadows through keywords and subsequently contrast these through a panel of experts. The preservation of marine biodiversity and the fishing habitat is highlighted as the main priority for most experts. Significant negative externalities, such as coastal pollution and climate change, are recognized, while there is general agreement on positive externalities in protected areas and education. In conclusion, research into the <em>Posidonia oceanica</em> meadows has experienced continuous growth due to their recognized ecological importance and the growing concern for externalities.
