College students (n = 106) read eight examples of political speech where the sex of the speaker and the level of aggression were manipulated. Participants then completed measures assessing message agreement, speaker credibility, and communicative appropriateness. Results indicated that male and female politicians were evaluated similarly on measures of persuasiveness. In addition, aggressive messages were evaluated as being less persuasive than nonaggressive messages. Finally, results identified a significant interaction between speaker sex and level of aggression when predicting message persuasiveness.Keywords: political communicationspeaker sexverbal aggression Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).","PeriodicalId":45913,"journal":{"name":"Communication Reports","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135393063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, existing studies have mainly emphasized a bystander intervention perspective, focusing on the observers’ role in online hate, despite theories and empirical evidence suggesting that the observation of a particular behavior can lead to the performance of that behavior. Thus, this study examined how witnessing online hate is associated with the perpetration of it, and the mediating role of social norms in this process. Findings from a cross-sectional survey showed that the observation and perpetration of online hate were significantly positively associated, and that perceived prevalence and social approval of online hate separately mediated this relationship. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.","PeriodicalId":45913,"journal":{"name":"Communication Reports","volume":"36 1","pages":"149 - 161"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47672434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a young adult sample (N = 268), lifetime TV use was not associated with racial attitudes either directly or indirectly. However, when testing the effects of TV use across specific life stages, TV use during childhood, adolescence, and adulthood were each indirectly associated with current racial attitudes through implicitly measured norms and motivation to avoid racism. Overall, childhood and adulthood TV use was associated with stronger racism, whereas adolescence TV use was associated with weaker racism. Directions for future research are discussed.","PeriodicalId":45913,"journal":{"name":"Communication Reports","volume":"36 1","pages":"175 - 189"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59429275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, exponential growth in multiethnic-racial populations necessitates further exploration of how individuals that exist between multiple ethnic-racial ingroups make sense of their ethnic-racial identities. The present study asked 217 multiethnic-racial adults how they understand and qualitatively represent their ethnic-racial identities. Findings revealed that participants express their ethnic-racial identities through the use of metaphors, and interpret their ethnic-racial identities as historically embedded. Implications and opportunities for future research are discussed.","PeriodicalId":45913,"journal":{"name":"Communication Reports","volume":"36 1","pages":"137 - 148"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48702507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A lab quasi-experiment was conducted. Participants received misinformation about weight loss methods and were given autonomy to decide whether to seek additional information online, followed by a subsequent misinformation correction. Information verification and trust in misinformation were positively related to resistance to correction, even when people’s predisposition towards effortful thinking and gender were included in the model. People who tried to verify the information and trusted the misinformation were not more likely to resist misinformation correction than those who did not fact-check and trusted the misinformation. Further, intention to share was positively associated with levels of trust in misinformation.","PeriodicalId":45913,"journal":{"name":"Communication Reports","volume":"36 1","pages":"162 - 174"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42429910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, sexual scripts theory suggests that individuals develop their own gendered scripts, with females and males experiencing sexual communication differently. Therefore, this study examined the association between SCD and sexual satisfaction. The results of a cross-sectional survey of individuals in sexually active romantic relationships (N = 496) revealed a significant curvilinear relationship between SCD and sexual satisfaction within the sexual issues factor of SCD among male participants. The implications of this study are discussed in the context of sexual communication research and clinical settings.","PeriodicalId":45913,"journal":{"name":"Communication Reports","volume":"36 1","pages":"123 - 135"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47345907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
