Also in the studies of Vincenz’s works this topic has not been discussed so far. It accounts for the mysterious figure of Mr Władysław – the“guiding spirit” of the fourth volume of the tetralogy Na Wysokiej połoninie [On the High Uplands] – and his story of the January Uprising, which he had experienced in his native Samogitia. The main protagonist of the story is the, arguably fictional, character of Mr Kołaszko, a patriot, a social activist and a friend of the Russians. He does, however, take up arms on the side of the insurgents and even organises his own unit. During one skirmish, he lets a captured Russian go free, and the captive comes back to join the unit along with a few more companions. Fatally wounded in the battle, he resists the hatred towards his enemies. In this way, Mr Władysław’s story becomes an explication of Vincenz’s own ethical programme. He was fascinated by Gandhi and the essential message of the Gospel about loving one’senemies. Mr Władysław himself is an authentic character, but the authenticity ofhis story is difficult to judge. The picture of Samogitia is fragmentary and the place names are not reflected in the topography. It is significant, however, that although almost the entire Vincenz’s tetralogy is set in the Hutsul region, this significant episode is located precisely in the northern borderland. {"title":"Rozwój myśli językoznawczej na Uniwersytecie Wileńskim w pierwszym trzydziestoleciu XIX wieku w świetle badań Anny Kaupuż","authors":"Irena Masojć","doi":"10.36770/bp.831","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36770/bp.831","url":null,"abstract":"The aim of this article is to show the development of linguistic thought at Vilnius University in the period 1805–1832 on the basis of the unpublished doctor’s dissertation The Essays on the History of Slavic Philology at Vilnius University at the Beginning of the 19th Century [Очерки по истории славянской филологии в Вильнюсском университете в начале XIX века] of Anna Kaupuż (1924–1994), a good archive expert. Following the materials found in the Lithuanian, Polish and Russian archives, the researcher reveals the place of linguistic issues in the didactics and scholarly interests of Vilnius University professors during this period of the development of historical-comparative linguistics. The research activities of Ivan Cherniavsky (1768–1822), Eusebius Slovacki (1773–1814), Leon Borovsky (1784–1846), and Ivan Loboiko (1786–1864), professors who held positions in the two departments, that is, in the Department of Russian Language and Literature and the Department of Rhetoric and Poetry, during the period in question, are examined in detail. The research allows to conclude that linguistic views of the afore-mentioned researchers were fully in line with the spirit of the period – their worldview was still influenced by classicist thinking but the comparativist ideas had reached the University, research in the Lithuanian language started, and the works in the field of dialectology were published. Thanks to I. Winek","doi":"10.36770/bp.827","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36770/bp.827","url":null,"abstract":"Ludwik Kondratowicz (1823–1862) first came to prominence in wider literary life as a translator and publisher of works by Polish Latin-language writers of the 16th and 17th centuries. The course of his translation work is known from the translator’s letters, above all to Jozef I. Kraszewski and Antoni Pietkiewicz, with whom he consulted his initiative. The translator’s works were published between 1848 and 1855 in two collections: Translations of Polish-Latin Poetry of the Zygmunt Era [Przekłady poezji polsko-łacińskiej epoki Zygmuntowskiej], and The Country’s Chronicle Writers [Dziejopisowie Krajowi], each comprising six volumes. For both series, Kondratowicz gave an aesthetically pleasing graphic design, as well as valuable editorial content, providing individual works with introductions and factual footnotes (by himself and, among others, Mikołaj Malinowski). The translation and publishing work received relatively considerable recognition from the culturalmilieu of Vilnius, but also of Warsaw and Greater Poland, and was meticulously remarked upon above all by the critics of the “Biblioteka Warszawska”. The reviewers’ opinions show the areas of interest of literary historians of the time. However, there was hardly any place for editorial and philological phenomena. Maciejewska","doi":"10.36770/bp.787","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36770/bp.787","url":null,"abstract":"The article depicts the letters of the Pomeranian Voivode’s wife Konstancja Czapska written in the 1740s to her daughter Magdalena and Magdalena’s husband Duke Hieronim Florian Radziwiłł, the analysis being focussed on the manner in which the correspondent addressed her relatives. On the one hand, the letters were intended to express feelings, maintain the emotional closeness and family ties. On the other, they were highly conventional through following epistolary tradition which, back then, was very much oriented towards the panegyric form. Konstancja Czapska used panegyric devices especially towards her son-in-law Duke Radziwiłł, who outranked her in the social hierarchy. By skilfully flattering her addressee, she wanted to win favour with him and gain his support in resolving her oldest son Tomasz’s legal problems. As a result, it is difficult to estimate with certainty her true attitude to her son-in-law – a man of a difficult and overbearing personality.
