Abstract

In her book, Anna Wiśniewska-Grabarczyk presents findings on the “Bulletin”, a secret internal magazine of the Main Office for the Control of Press, Publication and Public Performances [GUKPPiW: Główny Urząd Kontroli Prasy, Publikacji i Widowisk]. The “Bulletin” was published between 1945 and 1956, although not always regularly. Only those working in the censorship office had access to it. The “Bulletin” was primarily intended to serve the censors. These could not cope, for example, with writing reviews, in which they indicated why a particular book should or should not be published, or what changes should be made to it. The “Bulletin” published “model” reviews as well as supporting articles to help censors in their daily work. The texts dealt not only with literature, but also with other cultural fields or political issues. It was not uncommon for the “Bulletin” to contain articles critical of the censors or the functioning of the GUKPPiW.
