The onomastic repertoire that is the object of this study has been collected by means of door-to‑door surveys conducted a decade ago in villages founded or inhabited by Piedmontese farmers. In most cases, the documentation is unpublished. The saints described in this paper built Christianity by means of perfect synergy between fact and word, as their names have continued to exist across the centuries. In the present paper, we propose an inventory of some of the most important names of all time and their analysis from the perspective of onomastics. Thus, Eastern and Western Christianity meet through the common saints who act as patrons of their spirituality, testifying over the centuries to the fact that while the present may divide us, the past unites us. Christian rhetoricians enrich the word and the Church through their life and work, as vehicles through which creative grace is manifested. The corpus was taken from specialized studies, such as dictionaries of theology, biographies of saints, onomastic dictionaries. Methodologically, the paper employs precepts from the following fields: onomastics, theology, anthroponymy, cultural anthropology, the history of churches, rhetoric.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127660973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the help of concepts and precepts pertaining to the aforementioned fields, the research aims at exploring how certain film titles can be viewed as new names (novel linguistic signs) based on their specific semantic content and behaviour. Regardless of their lexical-semantic status, film titles prove to be cultural mediators, facilitating the communication of meaning (i.e., social, ethical, political, economic, etc. values) from the source language and culture to the target ones.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134272419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis will look at the techniques used in the translation of the proper names in the aforementioned novel, focusing on the bilingual and multicultural assimilation between Romanian and Hungarian. On the one hand, this assimilation determines the phonetic changes which occur as a result of the translation of proper names and draws attention to the uncertain categorial status of proper names, given the fact that they may be considered to function as appellatives. On the other hand, based on the assimilation between Romanian and Hungarian, the paper will examine the choices made by the author upon translating proper names, especially toponyms, from Romanian into Hungarian and German (see, for instance, Klausenburg and Kolosvar for Cluj(-Napoca), Hermanstadt for Sibiu etc.). Last but not least, the study analyses the references established by proper names, as well as the idea of class/nickname and the metonymic use of proper names by means of translation.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121803708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are sometimes even seen as expressing territorial claims or political nostalgia, thus as indicating politically expansive, hostile or at least insensitive attitudes – incompatible with multiculturalism. The paper will hint at another aspect of exonyms, i.e. the aspect of facilitating intercultural relations by making it easier to pronounce and use names for geographical features outside a community’s own territory, to remember them, to develop a rather precise mental map of foreign territories and thus to incorporate an otherwise ‘strange world’ into a community’s own cultural sphere, to avoid unnecessary alienation. The paper will also show that consequently the corpus of exonyms used by a certain community reflects this community’s external cultural, economic and political relations.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126089839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Toponymy impacts on the spatial projection of the action, while anthroponymy helps outline and individualize characters. This paper aims to reveal the extent to which characters’ names reflect multiculturalism. To this end, the object of study consists of anthroponyms used in Cultural revolution, one of the literary creations by L. M. Arcade (Leonid Mămăligă’s pseudonym). For instance, the names of some of the main characters in the novel, twelve students, are indicative of a wide multicultural range: Bokutu, a Congolese who studies theology; Şloimi Pipirig, a Jew; Coco Ipsilanti, whose name has Greek roots. There are also other names which are suggestive in themselves: Catrafus, Voioşilă, Johny Doi, Smântânică, etc. It is precisely the presence of students pertaining to various nationalities, religions and ethnic groups which allows the author to introduce a series of multicultural elements.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"156 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114852418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present article is focused on anthroponyms whose origin is different from Romanian, in view of illustrating the multiculturalism of Haţeg. Therefore, a sequential depiction of old Romanian anthroponymy is proposed, to complete the descriptions made over the years for other parts of the Romanian lands. The multiethnic anthroponymic picture remains evocative of one of the most dynamic towns of the olden days, situated at a crossroads. The interpretation of anthroponyms in Haţeg is carried out from various perspectives, but the predominant approach pertains to onomastics. This can be accounted for through the content or the particularities of the Haţeg registry book, which contains a significant number of personal names (first and last names). Due to the publication of the documents outside Romania, in Latin, Hungarian or German, the description of certain anthroponyms is difficult to achieve","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129692874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, in an important number of literary creations inspired by biblical truths and verses, nouns like Mire (‘groom’), Soţ (‘husband’), Frate (‘brother’), Prieten (‘friend’), Dor (‘longing’) etc. are integrated in original lyrical definitions or phrases which substitute the name of God. From the viewpoint of Christianity, these nominal phrases point out the human being’s aspiration towards the ecstatic state, as the human being is described during its mystical ascension, until the true, complete and everlasting unification with its Creator.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130312848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
