By this time the motivation behind the names analysed in this paper could have already faded, and national identity in the modern sense had not been formed yet. Thus, ethnic reconstruction must be based on a wide variety of linguistic and sociological elements. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of the witch trials as historical sources and the linguistic and ethnic situation of two areas of Transylvania through case studies.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130792618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ţinutul Suceava (1820) [Censuses of the Moldavian treasury. The county of Suceava (1820)], published in 2017 by Marius Adumitroaei and Mircea Ciubotaru. These censuses include lists of landowners, tribute payers and people exempted from tribute, providing valuable information about the dynamic of the population, the financial state of the inhabitants, the types of work in which people were engaged at that time or prior to that period, the ethnic and religious affiliation of the people included in the censuses, their kinship, marital status and the like. Moreover, the censuses provide significant information regarding the anthroponomastics of the area, as they mark a major moment in the formation of the system of Romanian personal names, that is, the introduction on a large scale of a second name (which accompanied people’s first name). The ethnic connections illustrated by these documents can be noticed in the presence of ethnonyms, some of which became anthroponyms (Cazacu, Grecu, Leahu, Rusu, Turcu), as well as in the presence of foreign names specific to certain ethnic groups (Gorovei, Melniciuc, Clim, Clucenschi, etc.).","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"197 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123012792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on names collected from online maps and popular websites offering accommodation, the author explores some characteristic features of these urban names (e.g. the frequent use of peculiar generic terms and the presence of additional components in the name forms referring to hotel chains, themes or services). Special attention is paid to semantics (e.g. specifiers indicating the location, the surroundings, an architectural feature of the building; the style of the interior design; the owner of the establishment) and language origin. The observed names belong to different cultural layers, providing references, for instance, to medieval sign boards, 19th-century monarchic and Hungarian national values as well as images of modern globalization.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133867514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The corpus consists of approximately two hundred nicknames which were registered during field research in the aforementioned settlements. The study will analyse the endurance of the nicknames across generations, as well as the reason behind their appearance. It must be noted that a considerable number of nicknames pertain to Roma ethnics, which make up an extended community in Sat-Şugatag, or to the Jewish people, very numerous in Berbesti, where they left a mark on the local population. These names will be grouped into different categories, such as nicknames derived from animal names: Hulpea (‘the fox’), Ursu (‘the bear’); nicknames based on the bearers’ craft: Stolnicul (‘the high steward’) or connected with some physical incapacity: Orbul (‘the blind man’), Schiopul (‘the lame man’).","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123011217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was conducted by analyzing the historical archive of two of the most relevant newspapers in Italy: la Repubblica and La Stampa. The purpose is to emphasize the main different semantic nuances of the words consisting of politicians’ surnames and Italian suffixes and to demonstrate the language contacts between Italian and other languages. As it can easily be guessed, most of the words investigated in this study were derived from names of American presidents as a result of the influence of American politics on the Italian system.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124456879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a dynamically changing reality, verbal and nonverbal signs are included in the creation of speech productions that meet the needs and demands of modern social communication. The game principle of interpretation of reality is known to have become much more active in the postmodern era. Its implementation involves the possession of various linguistic and cultural codes, a wide repertoire of signs, symbols, and texts. Currently, the game principle has an increasing impact on the creation of new ergonymy. The aim of the article is to consider the influence of globalization processes on semiotic game techniques expressed in the selection and combination of verbal and nonverbal components in the creation of Russian ergonyms. The data obtained allow us to make initial observations on the combination of international and nationally specific content in naming.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117281537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This diverse world is home to a lot of different cultures and (human and non-human) characters, living cheek by jowl, regardless of species, gender or life status. However, with many allusions, the Discworld is in several ways a parody of our own world, culture and society. All of this make it a very fruitful subject of literary onomastics. The paper analyses, using many examples, the complex multicultural and linguistic context and embeddedness of literary names and naming in Pratchett’s Discworld.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127389802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
