Interpretation of data and sources in etymological research 对词源学研究中数据和来源的解释

It is widely known that the main sources for the early history of toponyms in the Carpathian Basin are the charters created in the medieval Hungarian Kingdom, because these official documents contained a large number of vernacular proper names embedded in the Latin text. However, it is important to mention that the medieval charters were produced by the chancery and places of authentication along specific principles and needs. I argue that this circumstance must always be considered during the interpretation of the data. I will show some examples illustrating that – in certain cases – we have to take into account the nature of the sources in the reconstruction of the genesis of place names. My goal is to offer a brief outline of this issue through my own investigations.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122029040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anthroponyms at the crossroads of different cultures 不同文化交汇处的拟人词

{"title":"Anthroponyms at the crossroads of different cultures","authors":"Denisa-Alexandra Ionescu","doi":"10.30816/iconn5/2019/15","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30816/iconn5/2019/15","url":null,"abstract":"Anthroponymy mirrors faithfully the features and core values of people considered as individuals or as ethnic groups sharing common traits. Whether we refer to a religious name chosen for one’s child according to one’s personal beliefs, a foreign, trendy name, or an unusual name which ensures the bearer is easily distinguished, all anthroponyms convey a message. Depending on people’s particular way of perceiving integration in a foreign culture, some may choose to give their children names that are specific to their native culture to perpetuate their tradition; others may wish not to reveal their migrant background by naming their offspring in a way that is characteristic to the host culture. The present approach is both synchronic and diachronic. It follows naming practices in contemporary multicultural communities, at the same time illustrating how names are culturally embedded. The grounds for this perspective are provided by the analysis of a wide corpus of anthroponyms existing in sayings and proverbs pertaining to three different languages and cultures: Romanian, English and Italian.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129953643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On name change 关于更名

{"title":"On name change","authors":"Ioana Gafton","doi":"10.30816/iconn5/2019/8","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30816/iconn5/2019/8","url":null,"abstract":"This study is based on the research of certain documents on name change (laws, archive documents, Official Gazettes issued between 1895–1945). The aim is to clarify the reasons why such onomastic amendments were requested. Thus, the paper is focused particularly on the applications for name change, not on how they were solved. Name change was requested by Romanian citizens and by other inhabitants on the Romanian territory. The study contains a summary of the evolution of the legal framework which allowed the name changes to be made, along with the underlying motivations and procedures. In general, name change applications are directly related to the features of different historical events and only indirectly to the inhabitants’ citizenship and religion. The examples investigated are relevant: the examination of all the documents on name change issued during the aforementioned period enabled the author to obtain a faithful image of the extent of this phenomenon in relation to ethnicity. Upon processing the results, one can see that the reasons behind name change were multiple, especially social, cultural and political.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128556488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The synchronic socio-onomastic approach of a corpus consisting of 400 official names allowed us to identify in Romanian postcommunist society (1) a local, traditional type of multiculturalism promoting cultural diversity in school naming, and (2) a globalized, modern type of multiculturalism reflecting cultural homogenization as a result of the growing Anglophilia in naming kindergartens.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129900855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using case studies from interviews with parents in the UK who speak a first language other than English, it discusses the factors behind the name choice, various ways parents make their children’s names “work” in multiple languages, and why some parents give their children monolingual names. Children’s names often reflect their parents’ linguistic beliefs and intentions, but they do not predict how the family’s language policy will later develop.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130303581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Magyarization of microtoponymy did not have repercussions on the morphosyntactic and lexical levels; the adoption of Hungarian orthography ensured only the formal assimilation of the toponyms. The Hungarian orthographic principles and norms, used inconsistently, reflect numerous oscillating contexts in which the sounds ă, î, u have as graphic correspondents both labial and non-labial vowels. The Magyarization of Romanian toponymy in historical Transylvania did not obscure specific dialectal features, which highlight important information on the age and strata of populations and the relationships among them","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129182939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most importantly, these urbanonyms reference people markedly more than was the case with streets. Some names are meant to educate rather than identify. Also, the time span between the event and its commemoration tends to be shorter than in the case of street names. Naming garden squares offers more formal freedom (since these names do not appear in addresses). Finally, it seems that the namesake needs an object more than the referent needs a name","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"16 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131209682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Semitic-language names formed by semantic motivation from ‘less’, and their transcultural fortune: Whig leaders at Balliol as Dryden’s “sons of Belial”, and Swahili Mbilikimo for ‘Pygmy’ 由“less”语义动机形成的闪米特语名字,以及他们的跨文化财富:在贝利奥尔的辉格党领袖被德莱顿称为“Belial的儿子”,斯瓦希里语的Mbilikimo被称为“俾格米”。

Moreover, Arabic /bala/ ‘without’ also occurs in wordformation, and as the influence of Arabic along the eastern coast of Africa resulted in the Swahili language, the Swahili name for the Pigmies was formed as such an Arabic compound.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130956369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As for the use of foreign linguistic material, the increasing spread of English in commercial names is due to the process of globalization. In fact, in addition to English, other languages are employed in hybrid irregular neologisms, in which words or morphemes belonging to different languages are connected. Our linguistic analysis will enable us to trace the boundaries of the multicultural dimension of the Italian brands of companies that make mountaineering products, collected in a database of 2000 items.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114910754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aspects of multiculturalism in the diminutivisation of anthroponyms 拟人词小型化中的多元文化主义

The research is based on a comparative analysis between the multicultural elements that influence the process of turning proper names specific to Romanian and European areas into diminutives. To illustrate the goals of our research, we will begin by classifying the anthroponyms into two main categories − conventional (official) names and unconventional names (hypocoristics). There is a certain degree of relativity regarding the use of diminutive forms of proper names in European space, as they have a twofold character in the process of naming: on the one hand, they denote feelings of affection and, on the other, a certain degree of irony. The methodology employed consists of methods and concepts specific to onomastics, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics. The body of the paper will illustrate and analyse pieces of information and results obtained through sociolinguistic inquiry and surveys and will also introduce examples taken from online sources.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125796083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
