Functions of names in Romanian and foreign fairy tales – between cultural diversity and identity 罗马尼亚和外国童话中名字的功能——文化多样性和身份之间的关系

{"title":"Functions of names in Romanian and foreign fairy tales – between cultural diversity and identity","authors":"Veronica Oneț","doi":"10.30816/iconn5/2019/78","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30816/iconn5/2019/78","url":null,"abstract":": This paper is aimed at analysing the functions of names in Romanian and foreign fairy tales by highlighting similarities and differences of names in various cultures (English, French, German and Romanian). In comparison with names in real life, proper names in literature feature more functions than that of identification, as such names are varied from a semantic and structural perspective. The relationship between a name and its bearer is motivated; thus, literary names are generally more innovative and their structure is much more complicated than in the case of names in real life. One finds it impossible to talk about a set of stable functions of names in fairy-tale discourse, since it is impossible for one to separate their hierarchy from the text in which they appear. The functions of proper names in fairy tales are inferred by means of analogy based on the more general functions of verbal communication defined by Jakobson (1964: 88–94). In the framework of fairy-tale discourse, the functions are not independent, but actually depend on one another, as names in fairy tales are polyfunctional in themselves. Several functions occur: dominant (referential), as well as subjacent or latent (allusive, camouflage, localisation, didactic-educational, expressive, semantic and sociological) functions. The research framework of this paper is onomastics, but the approach is transdisciplinary. The methods belong to pragmatics, semantics and semiotics. The corpus was compiled from anthologies of folktales and modern fairy tales.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126924902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Between identity and otherness. Stereotypical forms of ethnonyms 在身份和他者之间。民族名称的刻板形式

{"title":"Between identity and otherness. Stereotypical forms of ethnonyms","authors":"M. Istrate","doi":"10.30816/iconn5/2019/57","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30816/iconn5/2019/57","url":null,"abstract":"We aim to investigate ethnic names from an interdisciplinary perspective embracing not only an onomastic viewpoint, but also an ethnological, anthropological and sociological one. Generally speaking, ethnonyms as group names are derived from toponyms, but their referents are the people who inhabit a specific geographical area and who have a particular cultural identity. Still, the identity of a group just like that of a person is validated only by referring it to a different one. Therefore, in addition to the official name (‘the endonym’), the others, who speak a different language and have a different culture and mindset, as a result of their way of perceiving the world, will employ an exonym, a word of their own creation which usually has nothing to do with the geographical area, but rather with the habits and customs of the inhabitants. Sometimes these onymic formulas may even become offensive and function as stereotypes which generalise and preserve not pertinent character traits, but collateral ones, in relation to the referent (the Scot = scrooge; the Brit = snob; the German = organised and precise; the Japanese = punctual; the Italian = associated with the Mafia; the Norwegian = cold and introverted). This phenomenon is found especially in multicultural environments where the convergence point of two cultures becomes a source of alterity also affecting the level of onomastics. We define by linguistic means the peculiarities of some peoples, i.e. the Italians, Americans, Romanians and Germans.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131462969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mihăescu is an obvious way to individualize the respective characters and to unmask their notable features or their more or less noble ancestry. In this regard, this paper is a semantic and etymological analysis of the anthroponymy in the above-mentioned novel. The research aims to illustrate the symbolic meaning and literary function of the characters’ names as a way of conveying the message of the literary work. Thus, the names of Gib Mihăescu’s characters reflect the values and multicultural influences specific to the age depicted in the novel, by virtue of the careful selection of the words fulfilling an onymic role, and as a result of the use or phonetic adaptation of foreign anthroponyms.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130668334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It fosters a deeper understanding of multiculturalism in unconventional nomination. Particularly, the following aspects of multicultural influences are analysed: 1) spheres of real and fictional worlds as sources of multiculturally motivated nicknames; 2) material, behavioural and mental aspects of non-native cultures as reflected in Russian nicknames; 3) cultures which find their reflection in Russian nicknames. The results show that in comparison with real worlds fictional worlds are more frequently reflected in Russian characterizing nicknames, impacted by the sphere of mass entertainment in its material (visual) manifestation.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121402232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Another reason for the inconsistency in the writing of toponyms is the personal knowledge of the individuals who recorded the microtoponyms in documents. These factors can account for the occurrence of different letters that represent the same phonetic sequence or the necessity of creating new letter combinations to express a phonetic sequence which does not have a correspondent in the Hungarian consonantal system.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127631156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multiculturalism in names of restaurants in Baia Mare 巴亚马雷餐厅名称中的多元文化主义

{"title":"Multiculturalism in names of restaurants in Baia Mare","authors":"Daiana Felecan","doi":"10.30816/iconn5/2019/53","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30816/iconn5/2019/53","url":null,"abstract":"The social and linguistic profile of Romania after 1989 has been increasingly multicultural. This phenomenon does not only occur in specific states. Definite and defining intrusions of other cultures in various countries in Europe and on other continents are diagnostic of the existential shape of humankind in the third millennium. The trend has altered all the social sectors in which it became manifest, transforming even, or especially, the level of language. One could claim, without it being an overstatement, that all the speakers of a nation or most of them use an “impure” language, as they “stain” the given historical language with lexical “intruders” without which communication would be suspended. To be a valid speaker of the new millennium one should think, speak and behave multiculturally. We are corporate employees of words, the interface between the conservation of locality and the expansion of multitasking. We behave like citizens of the cyberspace not only when working on online platforms, but also in our day-to‑day existence, which proves that we are three-dimensional individuals. This paper aims at observing and quantifying (qualitatively and quantitatively) the extent to which multiculturalism has infiltrated a certain field of material life in Baia Mare on the onomastic level, i.e. restaurants, as outlets for assumedly gourmet food. The article explores whether one can talk about pure onymic multiculturalism (determining the degree of coexistence of lexical oppositions) or whether the national avatar was eliminated and the borrowed element in the name has been established unequivocally (the novel element). The author uses the methodology specific to linguistics, onomastics and cultural studies.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131956029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The diachronic overview focuses on the Hungarian given name stock and its changes and alternations in time, space and society. The multidisciplinary approach is mainly based on historical and onomastic literature and large databases of given names from the Middle Ages to modern days. Among the religious factors, the study presents the impact of religious taboos, the interference between cults of saints of the same name, and the collective veneration of saints. Political factors are also introduced: the effects of the Reformation, Catholic Revival, and wars against the Ottoman Empire in the 16th–18th centuries.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123466780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Class and irony in the names of Measure for Measure 以其人之道还治其人之身

The names and generics clearly mark class distinctions among the characters. Those with common status usually have lexical descriptions of their physical appearance or occupations. Such names might be described as redenden Namen, but they need to be understood semiotically. Specifically, such names are not just lexical descriptions but are symbolic by having dualistic references. The same types of dual references are also clear in the Latinate names of aristocrats. Thus, all the references have ironic meanings and evoke a comic vision of moral weaknesses at all levels.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125463730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
